Russia’s woes in building new tanks, repairing or even refurbishing old stocks, optics and ball bearings are all normally sourced from the west, so they have a severe shortage now hence the low output in armour etc.

In Dmitri's link, is that a car or a motorbike flying over that row of houses with its headlights still on?
Amazing bit of footage. The delay between impact and actual burst is lengthy, suggests it wasn't a delay fuse but one that wasn't fused and it just cooked off?

The lights look to come from that white car which is parked facing to left of the frame. Its lights are off but the blast probably triggered its alarm which put the lights on. You can just make out twin beams of light as it spirals out of the blast.

Ffrom the New York Times today:
The Air National Guardsman accused of leaking classified documents to a small group of gamers had been posting sensitive information months earlier than previously known and to a much larger chat group, according to online postings reviewed by The New York Times.

In February 2022, soon after the invasion of Ukraine, a user profile matching that of Airman Jack Teixeira began posting secret intelligence on the Russian war effort on a previously undisclosed chat group on Discord, a social media platform popular among gamers. The chat group contained about 600 members.

The case against Airman Teixeira, 21, who was arrested (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/13/world/documents-leak-leaker-identity.html) on April 13, pertains to the leaking of classified documents on another Discord group of about 50 members, called Thug Shaker Central (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/13/world/europe/jack-teixeira-pentagon-leak.html). His job as an information technology specialist at an Air Force base in Massachusetts gave him top secret clearance.

It is not clear whether authorities are aware of the classified material posted on this additional Discord chat group.

The newly discovered information posted on the larger chat group included details about Russian and Ukrainian casualties, activities of Moscow’s spy agencies and updates on aid being provided to Ukraine. The user claimed to be posting information from the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and other intelligence agencies.

The additional information raises questions about why authorities did not discover the leaks sooner, particularly since hundreds more people would have been able to see the posts.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius believes limited attacks by Ukraine on Russian territory are an acceptable tactic in repelling Russia's invasion.

In such a war, it is "completely normal for the attacked party to advance into enemy territory, for example to cut off supply routes," he said on the political talk show Maybrit Illner on Thursday evening. "As long as no cities, civilians or civilian areas are attacked , one will necessarily have to accept that."

Ukraine would make a good NATO member, they know what is important, and how to protect their own territory from an aggressor nation. The expectation that Russia would renege on any agreement is well founded on the history of Russia, they certainly have a way of disregarding agreements that is at least consistent. Russia has itself to blame for becoming a pariah nation, the pavlovian response that characterises Russia's acceptance that corruption is business as usual and their govt is what they deserve.

Now in the spirit of Easter, and Eid, and to give an aero flavour to the tawdry business of keeping up with Voldamorts Fort Fumble ensembles escapades, and to preserve balance...

everyone can have a bad day, like waking up in the morning and thinking it is a good idea to invade your neighbour.

The only civilians and cities attacked so far have been by Russia, deliberately or as own goals. It takes enthusiasm to try to better the turret toss record which stands at around 235' IIRC, by doing it to a peacefully sleeping Lada in a parking lot in Belgorod. Ordinarily, vandalism is not covered by insurance, so that sucks. :}

U.S. hits Russia's "shadow fleet": largest oil carrier in India is deprived of international insurance

The shadow fleet of dozens of tankers, which transports Russian oil to Asia bypassing Western sanctions, was hit by the US sanctions.

India-registered Gatik Ship Management, which became a major carrier of oil from Russia last year, has lost international insurance because of a violation of the "price cap" mechanism, Bloomberg reported, citing a source familiar with the situation.

The Mumbai-headquartered company, which nobody knew about until last year, assembled a fleet of 48 tankers with a combined capacity of more than 30 million barrels and worth $1.4 billion. Almost all of the vessels entered Russian ports and exported oil or oil products, a Vortexa analysis showed.

‘Our credibility must be safeguarded’: Cyprus in turmoil after Russia sanctions

Island shuts 10,000 Russian bank accounts as US and UK put Cypriot lawyers and accountants under sanctions for enabling oligarchs including Roman Abramovich

……Attending this week’s emergency meeting at the presidential palace, the island’s central bank governor, Constantinos Herodotou, said Cypriot authorities had not only closed 123,000 suspicious bank accounts but about 43,000 shell companies.

“Cyprus was addicted to Russian money before the Americans very efficiently began weaning them off it,” said Prof Hubert Faustmann who teaches history and political science at the University of Nicosia. “They really have cleaned up their act and what we are seeing is the very last act in a story that has gone on for decades.”

https://understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-april-22-2023

Russian milbloggers have provided enough geolocated footage and textual reports to confirm that Ukrainian forces have established positions in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast as of April 22 though not at what scale or with what intentions.

Geolocated footage published by a Russian milblogger on April 22 shows that Ukrainian forces have established positions on the Dnipro River bank north of Oleshky (7km southwest of Kherson City) and advanced up to the northern outskirts of the settlement on the E97 highway, as well as west of Dachi (10km south of Kherson City).[1] This footage also indicates that Russian forces may not control islands in the Kinka and Chaika rivers less than half a kilometer north of the geolocated Ukrainian positions near the Antonivsky Bridge.

Russian milbloggers claimed on April 20 and 22 that Ukrainian forces have maintained positions in east bank Kherson Oblast for weeks, established stable supply lines to these positions, and regularly conduct sorties in the area—all indicating a lack of Russian control over the area.[2] Another milblogger’s battle map claimed that Russian forces do not control some Dnipro River delta islands southwest of Kherson City as of April 22, suggesting possible Ukrainian advances on these islands.[3]

Some milbloggers complained that the slow rate of Russian artillery fire due to the over-centralization of the Russian military command allowed Ukrainian forces to land on the east bank.[4] Russian forces may be prioritizing maintaining defenses in urban areas such as Oleshky and Nova Kakhovka, leaving the islands in the Dnipro River delta unmanned.

The extent and intent of these Ukrainian positions remain unclear, as does Ukraine’s ability and willingness to maintain sustained positions in this area.

ISW is recoding territory on the east bank of the Dnipro River to Ukrainian-held only now because this is the first time ISW has observed reliable geolocated imagery of Ukrainian positions on the east bank along with multi-sourced Russian reports of an enduring Ukrainian presence there.

Chapter 1 ARTICLE 17. To every Union Republic is reserved the right freely to secede from the U.S.S.R.

What Russia is doing now would have been a crime under the same constitution:

ARTICLE 18. The territory of a Union Republic may not be altered without its consent.

ARTICLE 22. The Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic consists of the Altai, Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk, Ordjonikidze, Maritime and Khabarovsk Territories; the Archangel, Vologda, Voronezh, Gorky, Ivanovo, Irkutsk, Kalinin, Kirov, Kuibyshev, Kursk, Leningrad, Molotov, Moscow, Murmansk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Orel, Penza, Rostov, Ryazan, Saratov, Sverdlovsk, Smolensk, Stalingrad, Tambov, Tula, Chelyabinsk, Chita, Chkalov and Yaroslavl Regions; The Tatar, Bashkir, Daghestan, Buryat-Mongolian, Kabardino-Balkarian, Kalmyk, Komi, Crimean, Mari, Mordovian, Volga German, North Ossetian, Udmurt, Checheno-Ingush, Chuvash and Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics; and the Adygei, Jewish, Karachai, Oirot, Khakass and Cherkess Autonomous Regions.

Khrushchev ceded Crimea to Ukraine FSR on 19 February, 1954.

ARTICLE 23. The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic consists of the Vinnitsa, Volynsk, Voroshilovgrad, Dnepropetrovsk, Drogobych, Zhitomir, Zaporozhe, Izmail, Kamenets-Podolsk, Kiev, Kirovograd, Lvov, Nikolaev, Odessa, Poltava, Rovno, Stalino, Stanislav, Sumy, Tarnopol, Kharkov, Chemigov and Chernovitsy Regions.

Treaty on the Formation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics drafted 1919, ratified 30 December, 1922

Article 26 affirmed the clause in the declaration where each republic has the right to leave the Union.

Perhaps she should change to drinking bottled water.

Whatever the official rationale, it’s not being shared publicly. I note there have been op-Ed’s by knowledgeable military experts which urge the provision of fighter jets for UKR. I’m astonished that any general officer with combined armed operations would choose to conduct defensive or offensive ground operations with insufficient AirPower.

Ironically, by announcing such they are actually supporting the argument by Ukraine that they need the F-16 to replace them, whether true or not.

Hard to see an argument for not doing it. What's the difference between supplying combat aircraft and supplying all the other weapons that are already in use? Ukraine's Western allies have now invested so much in repelling the invasion that they surely cannot now afford to let Russia claim any sort of victory.

That was a risky assault for the Ukrainians, it could have easily gone the other way. The Russians friend slept through the whole thing. Seems a lot of effort to get a Lada for the surviving family.

If the incident was beside Moscow, there might be sympathy for the brutality of war, but this bunch are part of a criminal invasion, they are fighting the wrong people.

Nutloose,
The velocity of the rounds exiting the barrel of that rifle he's holding is the same as a 6'8" weightlifter holding the same rifle. My guess is low CG and profile benefits him far better in many situations than the tall guy as well. I've read of many like him as "tunnel rats" going below to kill in Viet Nam. In the Pacific in WWII, the video is also probably a good example of the size comparisons of the island Infantry combatants throughout the war. The tall guys took their lumps from the short Japanese as well.

I'm just a Civvy, but my guess is 99% of the fights this guy might find himself in aren't boxing matches.
Take care!

"This is going to end in hell": Russian oligarchs believe that Russian authorities are leading the country into abyss.

While the Kremlin pretends that everything is under control, the oligarchs start talking openly about the upcoming catastrophe….

Which is why all the Oligarchs are looking at their own PMC's as they can see the writing on the wall.
IMHO several things point to a general breakdown.

1/
The Russian Army, their general powerbase is no longer as it was and probably would struggle to defend the outlying states from insurrection and dissent, along with their overseas commitments such as Syria etc.
2/
Their budget is in tatters, funding a war that it looks like they can no longer afford, their main earners in Gas and Oil a shadow of its former self and with that other large earner, Nuclear energy to also be hit by sanctions, it will get worse. Militarily, I do not think they will have the budget to replace their material losses any time soon..
3/
Conscription, the way it was handled was woofully inept, engineers, those responsible in key infrastructure, heating, power, water, food, production etc were whisked off the streets and sent to be slaughtered in their thousands decimating the factories and infrastructure required to run the Country back home, people that will take two generations to replace.
4/
Police, the latest to be conscripted from the likes of Moscow, meaning a rise in crime, and with the returning prisoners released for serving in Ukraine, a larger criminal base of trained and possibly armed thugs released from prison and finding a lack of police to keep a lid on things.
5/
Conscripted youth slaughtered on the fields of Ukraine for what, Putins vanity, meaning those jobs I mentioned in three will have to skip 2 generations, as the youth that would have filled them is also gone, meaning the generation after them will need to take their place.
6/
High end skills, such as in computing, finance, etc, lost to the country when those with the funds, saw the writing on the wall and fled early on, probably never to return.
7/
Finally, a Country now cut off from the world by just about everyone they used to trade with, who will not wish to trade with nor operate in Russia for a significant time into the future. A Country that is a pariah in the world and far from strengthening it's place and position in the World, has destroyed it and the myth that the Russian Military once had, they have bolstered the Wests resolve and brought NATO back together bigger and stronger than before as no one could have envisioned, and strengthened the cooperation of European countries and the USA.

Hard to argue that Putin hasn't achieved the destruction of the "Nazi regime", he just got the flag wrong. Destruction of Russia's conventional arms and economy in one single hit is worthy of an enduring memory. Pity that innocent people were harmed by Putins need for validation. Would have thought having more loot than any other despot in recent history was a good reason to keep a low profile.

The growth of PMCs puts Russia back to the future for being a failed state overseen by robber barons. Their neighbours have long memories of the kindness shown in the past by Moscow, the wheels are coming off the wagon.

Best way! 🙂

The Colonel should be promoted for saving the lives of 7 tank crews and for allowing for 7 tanks to be re allocated to guarding Russias eastern borders as China does its maths on recovering Chinese territory stolen by Russia. Xi would be rubbing his hands in glee for Putin presenting such an easy option to regain historical lands of the greater China region, which happens to include Sakhalin, Vladivostok.... and other nice spots on the map. Voldemort needs more than 7 engines to hold only the territory in his game of Risk, it's now Xi's turn.

The saving of Ukrainian ATGW's is also desirable, as is the removal of the CO2 that the T-90's emit in running away from Ukrainian defenders and when they enter the turret toss competition, the CO2 emissions from the SSTO attempts is mitigated. All in all a win-win.

Now, if Ukraine wanted to cause more havoc, they should offer additional rewards for more engines from the KAMAZ, Armata and other sundry items, including Su-25, Su-35 engines, or at least their compressor blades, they can be mailed to Kyiv... Firing pins would suffice.

Interesting take on the new Russian 'Armata' tanks:

Russia Finally Sends T-14 Armata Tanks to Ukraine « Lawrence Person's BattleSwarm Blog (https://www.battleswarmblog.com/?p=54769)

Seems they will still have the turret altitude competition, but this time the crew will have a chance to survive:
The T-14 tank has an unmanned turret, with crew remotely controlling the armaments from “an isolated armoured capsule located in the front of the hull.”
Problem being, if the auto-loader jams or malfunctions (which apparently it is prone to do), the crew can't access it to unjam it.

Freedom is not free. If the west wants to safeguard it's borders from the neo-empire egos such as Putin has shown himself to be, then adequate capability needs to be available to meet a rapidly escalating risk, and arguably, even the USA is falling down on that score. At a time that China is adding more carriers and blue water capability, the US response is to scrap 2 of their well proven carriers. Right now, that should be reconsidered. I understand that the maintenance cycle and refuelling will be a factor in that decision, but it is time that the refuelling was conducted as a modular system to permit rapid return to service of these fleet assets. Hulls loose thickness over time, but these ships are still young.

A fascinating look at Russia’s nuclear stockpile and that they are trying to hide the true state of play.

https://kyivindependent.com/russia-tries-to-conceal-its-dwindling-nuclear-stockpile/

As for the much vaunted Satan missiles the propagandists keep bleating on about.

From the article

For instance, Russia's Strategic Nuclear Forces claim to operate 46 heavy missiles R-36M2 Voyevoda (commonly known in the West under the NATO name, SS-18 Satan), which entered service in the 1970s and 1980s.

These missiles make up the bulk of Russia’s nuclear power, with one missile designed to carry up to 10 warheads with a yield of up to 1 megaton (equivalent to 1 million tons of TNT). For comparison, the bomb that was used against Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of 16 kilotons (16,000 tons of TNT).

But the R-36M2 Voyevoda missiles are considered to have long passed their operational life, especially given the fact that most missile types are designed to sustain between 10 and 15 years of service, with the possibility of extension following test launches and checkups.

Russia has been running a program to extend the use of R-36s since as far back as 2003.

The R-36 operation and production history is closely tied to Ukraine's Yuzhnoye Design Bureau, which terminated the missile's maintenance for Russia in 2015.

In 2018 and 2019, the Kremlin again announced its plans to extend the use of R-36M2 systems. But even since then, there have been little to no test launches, which suggests that the missiles are not being extended anymore, and that there’s no certainty regarding their operational status after so many years in service.

Inevitably, the old R-36s are being gradually retired, according to Pavel Luzin, a Russia defense policy expert with the U.S.-based Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

"This process began a long time ago, and it's a natural thing," the expert said.

“You can extend the use of R-36M2 on paper for as long as you want, but delivery vehicles, navigation components, propellent elements run out of their time. There is the reduction of not only missiles but, for instance, nuclear-armed submarines and even bombers. Not only R-36M2s, but also Topol and Topol-M missile systems are also being removed from service.”

And that's not even considering the components that were sold to finance yachts, stored incorrectly, built on the cheap, or only ever existed on paper.

Of course, if they really are stupid enough to use a nuclear weapon (and my uneducated impression is that they're not) they only need one that works...

Yes, but the corollary is, unless they are willing to launch all their missiles in one Armageddon attack, they have to be absolutely certain that the one they do use does work.

the average Ivan probably wouldn't notice the difference. But he for sure will notice the total abscense of MBT's whatsoever. Tanks are what is considered the pride and strength of the armed forces of Russia since WW2. So to the extent that there were two statues in every soviet village, Lenin and a T34.. The ground forces are what the Russian military doctrine has been leaning on, in propaganda as well as in strategies.
No MBT in a parade is no parade at all.

🚨 #Bakhmut may very well end up being the catalyst for a Russian civil war.

1) Putin has ordered that Bakhmut must be taken by May 8th, in time for the Soviet Victory Day parade on May 9th. He has threatened Shoigu and others with dire consequences.

2) Prigozhin has Putin's blessing as head of Wagner PMC, a mercenary group established and largely controlled by the FSB & GRU (Russian Military Intelligence).

3) Army and intel services famously hate each other. The jockeying for power between the various factions has been ongoing.

4) Expect Wagner PMC to retreat from Bakhmut in the coming days to completely screw over Shoigu and the Russian army. This is a perfect way for Prigozhin to setup Shoigu and other generals.

5) For May 9th, Ukrainians may end up controlling all of Bakhmut, and possibly much, much more. This would have highly unpredictable domino effects domestically in Russia.

6) Right now, the Russian Game of Thrones is just backstabbing, scheming in the shadows, assassinations, and so on. But Bakhmut may turn out to be the catalyst to ignite a 'hot' civil war among the factions in Russia.

"Russia is on the brink of catastrophe."

Prigozhin issued an ultimatum to Shoigu and threatened Putin with military mutiny

Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the PMC "Wagner", wrote a letter to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, demanding to provide ammunition.

Prigozhin gave an ultimatum that if the problem with supplies for his PMC is not solved, he will complain to Putin, and the mercenaries will leave their positions in Bakhmut and retreat.

"I appeal to Shoigu with a request to immediately issue ammunition. In case of refusal, I consider it necessary to inform the Supreme Commander-in-Chief (Putin) about the existing problem in order to make a decision and about the advisability of further presence of the "Wagner" PMC in Bakhmut in conditions of ammunition shortage. <...> The deadline for making a decision is today, April 28," Prigozhin said.

The leader of the mercenaries said that "ammunition is no longer left for weeks, but for days." "If the shortage does not stop, <...> part of the units we will be forced to withdraw from this territory, and then everything else will collapse," Prigozhin said.

According to his prediction, Ukraine's offensive will begin no later than May 15. "We need to stop deceiving the population and telling them that everything is fine with us. <...> I must honestly say: Russia is on the brink of catastrophe," Prigozhin stressed.

Is anyone else suffering from their sense of outrage at Russian lies and propaganda being dulled down by their ever-increasing level of absurdity?

I realise this stuff is playing out for mind-control purposes within Russia, but the Russians I've met have been decent and intelligent people (not to mention a lot of fun on a night out). Surely to god they aren't being suckered by crazy crap like that in post #241 by NutLoose are they?

Good to see there are increasing signs of civil unrest, in the form of what looks very like targeted attacks within Russia, presumably by Russians, to try and hinder their war machine. In the short term this may help Ukraine. At the back of my mind there are niggles about mass civil unrest in Russia and all the associated consequences for Europe (and the rest of the world). Hard not to look back at what happened a century ago after the revolution, and again after the break up of the Soviet Union, and wonder what mayhem might result if Putin was toppled by force.

I'm looking forward to Parade Day, May 9.
People of Ukrainian descent and allegiance exist in great numbers throughout Russia, especially the relevant parts, the Western end of the country.
I'd be very surprised if sleepers have not been identified and equipped with armed drones to bomb and disrupt the "victory" day parades - even one such successful attack, just a singe grenade in the middle of a big public parade would carry such a message. But imagine a number of them?
Ukraine has a golden opportunity here to get a massive PR victory - so you can bet that they've been planning it.
Let's hope it works.
The sight of grenades dropping amongst the goose-steppong Orks in Red Square would be even better than downing the big bridge in terms of hearts and minds, and also in terms of strategic advantage due to the humiliation delivered.
Fingers crossed.

What’s the big deal about a parade? I rather see resistance “sleepers”used for vital military purposes.

Whatever is used, they must be careful not to damage civilians or civilian infrastructure. The last thing Ukraine needs is any loss of moral high ground. Troops and tanks (if there are any left); all for it.

I’ve recently heard at a closed-door meeting in D.C. that, through backdoor diplomacy, the Russians communicated to the Biden administration that the delivery of ATACAMs would be a red line for them. Two comments: 1) I don't know what is worse self-imposed red lines or letting the Kremlin determine US policy towards Ukraine. 2) any red lines established by an aggressor are there to be broken and circumvented. Here is one of the ways how to do it. 👇

Just as tanks were and artillery etc, sorry but the more the USA cowers to these thugs the more they get away with it, the US reply should have been straight and to the point, a single nuclear weapon used there will be an equal response on the city of our choosing. Ie call their bluff. If it’s okay for Russia to launch attacks from out of the Country then the same should go for Ukraine.

Ie call their bluff. If it’s okay for Russia to launch attacks from out of the Country then the same should go for Ukraine. Sorry, Nutty, but President Joe Biden doesn't answer to you.
US support to Ukraine via arms, intel, logistics, training, et al will be whatever the various minds in DC decide is the best course forward. You don't get a vote.
(1) American aid is pretty darned substantial to date, (2) so far the bipartisan support for that stance remains good, (3) and the US has more than Ukraine to worry about.
Reaching a consensus on the above is very much the child of politics (which is more of a JB topic, as is your whinge).

On the practical side as it pertains to military personnel: trying to contain the war (since prevention utterly failed ) and keep it from spreading, as well as trying to gage the effects and risks of escalation without letting Agony Aunts - like yourself - influence the decision is what is needed to avoid 1914 all over again.(Well, that's one line of thinking at Foggy Bottom, there are others). The time to stop this war was during the prevention stage: lots of blame to go around there in a lot of capitals.

Another practical consideration: the US gets to benefit from some field testing and validation of various weapons systems (and some TTP), without having to throw in a lot of boots on the ground.
That appeals to a variety of Americans whether you like it or not.
Lastly, about the F-16's. I still think that the sharp guy from RUSi is right about the limitations the Falcons would have (at present) unless more airfields were given an upgrade, but I'd love to see the Vipers (from whomever chooses to contribute them) go forth and do their thing with Ukrainian pilots at the controls. Setting the conditions for that is, I suspect, still a work in progress (that's a guess). And if a few crusty old American Viper pilots wanted to do a Flying Tigers thing, that would not hurt.

For Video Mixdown: you may be right about turning points. (https://www.pprune.org/military-aviation/652441-ukraine-war-thread-part-2-a.html#post11427885) (I have a weird analogy going on in my head, where Mariupol looks to be St Vith to Bakhmut's Bastogne, but that's probably a reach)

Sorry LW, I meant to put NATO not the US, there are more than one nuclear power in that organisation.

By the west / NATO failing to provide the weapons needed, longer range missiles, fighters etc containment may well fail and then you are left with the problem and costs involved with bolstering the defence of some of NATOs smaller and threatened members.
If the west had provided the weaponry as and when asked for, then the depth of Russian incursion would never have happened, something we still haven’t learnt from. As for pre invasion I was one of those saying NATO / UN ha! should have gone in as peacekeepers at the invitation of Ukraine to the disputed border.
