Sorry LW, I meant to put NATO not the US, there are more than one nuclear power in that organisation. You will get no disagreement from me. The failure to "speak with one voice" is what IMO enabled the decision (by Vlad Vader) that the risks were less (his assessment that the dysfunctional antics of various pols would leave the field clear to do that .. and it's his own damned fault that the logistics and momentum didn't result in the Blitzkrieg he was hoping to emulate.
As for pre invasion I was one of those saying NATO / UN ha! should have gone in as peacekeepers at the invitation of Ukraine to the disputed border. But the snag there is that the Russian veto would have rendered that viable idea (hell, viable since 2014) moot.

As to military and aviation matters, I will note that while the US has offered up a variety of kit - to include Over 1,600 Stinger anti-aircraft systems - the State Department remains a bundle of mostly useless *****, and they have been since about the time I was loitering off of the coast of Lebanon on a destroyer in the early 1980's. For the Gunny's out there, that looks more like a FAE type explosion than a munitions dump going off, reminiscent of the fertiliser in Beirut, or coal dust. Doesn't look like munition store IMHO.

Lots of bang though... Glaziers will be busy as will the hospitals for the shard injuries.

One report on Twitter says below, how accurate that is however bearing in mind Ukraine would want to put a good PR out about it.

Russia hit Pavlograd. Reportedly a chemical plant that stored old ballistic missiles + fuel which wasn't disposed of yet. In the footage secondary explosions can be seen which look like ammunition.

For what it's worth, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast was the home of Pivdenmash (formerly Yuzhmash) which is a space/rocket design bureau and factory and IIRC it's the home of the Ukrainian part of the UK small launch rocket company Skyrora. Anyhow it's obviously consistent with the explanation that old rockets and fuel might be somewhere there. If it's a cover up it is convenient for Ukraine that it should have happened there.

Pivdenmash operated initially as "plant 586" in the Soviet Union (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union). In 1954, Soviet aviation engineer Mikhail Yangel (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Yangel) established the autonomous design bureau designated OKB-586 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OKB-586), from the former chief designer's division of plant 586.

Russian TV showing the attack by Russia on Uman that killed 23, including 6 children, in a residential, civilian area is a crime, compounded by the Orwellian obscenity of purporting the same footage to the Russian zoids as an attack by Ukraine on a DPR city. Russia is a moral offal pit.

Lest we forget.

RIP children and families murdered by Russians.

Interesting field report on how mud and water make German artillery pieces less effective (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/a-muddy-mess-in-ukraine-is-making-trouble-for-new-howitzers-so-sensitive-to-dirt-they-come-with-their-own-vacuum-cleaners/ar-AA1aBv22?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=a573b5ff76844a30afd49f570cf1bf93&ei=12)... high tech weapons come with some side effects
Germany has sent 14 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, according to an inventory (https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-en/news/military-support-ukraine-2054992) of its military support to Kyiv. These weapons contain electronics that are so vulnerable to dirt and moisture that soldiers have to wear slippers or booties when they enter the vehicles so they don't track in any mud, the New York Times reported (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/01/world/europe/ukraine-mud-counteroffensive-weapons.html) on Monday. Each howitzer even comes with a vacuum cleaner, and the barrels sometimes have to be cleaned with a long brush. "The Panzer really loves cleanliness," an artillery commander named Mykola told the Times, referring to a nickname for the Panzerhaubitze. "If you fire off two full loads of ammunition, you need to spend a day servicing it."
Serhii, a lieutenant with the 43rd Separate Artillery Brigade, even decided to recall the howitzers from the field out of fear that should the machines come under Russian fire, mud will prevent them from escaping the bombardment, the Times reported. In Germany, these vehicles were kept in climate-controlled garages.

The Moscow Times: Russian state propaganda has been instructed to prepare the population for defeat in Ukraine's counteroffensive.

The Kremlin has issued new instructions to propagandists ahead of Ukraine's counterattack. According to the instructions, the state media should not reassure Russians by telling them that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are unprepared, the Meduza news agency quoted its sources in the presidential administration.

On the contrary, propagandists are required "not to lower expectations" about the announced counterattack and to emphasize that NATO countries supply Ukraine with weapons and support it in every possible way.

According to the sources, the AP expects that this approach will make it easier for the population to accept Russia's possible defeat. If Ukraine recovers any territories, Russians will be told that this happened thanks to the "huge efforts of the West," which it "concentrated on the front."

If the counteroffensive is unsuccessful, citizens will be told that "the army skillfully repelled a superior attack," and the price of that victory will increase dramatically, the sources add...

According to sources:

Pope Francis says he is willing to travel to Ukraine, which is under attack from Russia, but only on the condition that he can also travel to Moscow. "I will go to both places or to neither," the head of the Catholic Church said in an interview with the March 11 edition of Argentinian newspaper La Nacion. War in Ukraine could only be ended through dialogue and concrete peace initiatives, he said.

Clearly not footage from a fixed camera, and the scene seems to pan slightly exactly in sync with the arrival in frame of the drone just as if the operator was anticipating its arrival.
I call maskirovka.
Is this going to be an excuse to bomb Zelensky's palace, or even his person?
Hoperfully other footage will come out from security cameras that can clarify the flightline of the drone and whether it was actually heading towards the Kremlin and this video isn't a cleverly set up angle to make it appear so.

Definitely something odd about those drone strikes. Are we expected to believe that a couple of slow flying drones travelled around 300 miles across Russia from the Ukrainian border without being detected?

Someone smarter than me could work out the speed from the video frame rate. My guess is no more than 100kts from just eyeballing it. They look to be flying very slowly.

Perhaps Russia might want to explain how their state of the art air defence systems failed to detect these drones for the three hours or so they were flying over Russian territory.

a. Sun Tzu would probably advocate the strategy of taking out the enemy king/leader in order to end a war.

b. Clausewitz would (perhaps) identify Putin as a center of gravity (strategic CoG in any case) worth targeting with the aim of ending the war by removing the center of gravity.

From the perspective of an objective analysis (if indeed Ukraine sent in a few drones to try and take out the head of government) this was an attempt at a decapitation strike that was worth trying if you are Ukraine.

(Yes, it's been about 20 years since the attempted decapitation strikes in Baghdad were being bandied about/discussed, etc)

they have been trying to do that since Feb 24 2022..... how's that working out for you so far Vlad.

Seems odd that the Ukrainians would go to al the effort of flying a drone from Ukraine to the Kremlin, and then forgetting to put any bang in it. Russia has a single play book, written by Potemkin, all smoke, mirrors and own goals. 191,940 fewer voters for Vlad so far. Well done!

Vlad doesn't get it yet that every Ukrainian on the field is now a Zelenskyy, just like all the #200 and #300's of the criminal forces of Russia are Vladomir's. The Ukrainians holding out in Bakhmut aren't there at gun point, they are there to kill invaders, and just like Zelenskyy, they aren't asking for a ride, they just want the tools to do pest control.

Let's be flattered, Nutty. Even China on its own can't defeat Britain, but requires the aid of a minor Eastern-European country.

But China, and the second best army in Ukraine?

The concept seems to be in line with the invective the Mr Nukem Dukem brings forth like a fur ball in his incessant white noise parroting Kremlin propaganda. Russia doesn't need to look to the east for help, they need to prepare for the east evicting Russian speakers from the Chinese territory that has been assimilated into the Russian federation, where China didn't have a vote. Vlad has given Xi the vote to recover those lands that have been squandered by Russia in the interim.

Russia is heading towards their historic dimensions, when they were a corridor between St Pete's and Moscow.

Voldemort is playing with fire. His Maskirovska is as inept as everything else he has done since 1999. The rhetoric on Nukes is reckless. Does he assume that there are no consequences from genocide to attempt to achieve his criminal enterprises goal, that would result in Russia being a pariah state for centuries?
The nukes blow back on Russia and China, that will be about as smart as his musing in February about wanting to move his drinks cabinet 6" further to the west.

T28, Russia is a terrorist state, removing posts that state that doesn't alleviate the fact that Russia is a terrorist state, and the point that has arisen here is due to the spineless insanity that passes for UN deliberations. Article 27(3), Russia has no say in the UNSC, never has since 2014 in respect of Ukraine and the criminal actions of Russia..

If, and I hope they do not, if Russia goes feral and drops sunshine, then they need to be evicted from civilized interaction, end of story. There is no moral equivalency to WW2 here, Russia is just threatening to add to their unspeakable crimes, to support an evil short of stature crim.

In my opinion, the most likely scenario is that it was the FSB. Their aim would be to justify the assassination of Zelensky, mass mobilization, or to escalate the conflict - all without putting Putin in any danger.

They'll look for any way of squirming out of this situation they've created. This is one possible way.

Information has appeared that the recent drone attack on the airfield in Bryansk region led to one An-124-100 plane being completely destroyed and a second being damaged.

The Russian air force started with no more than 12, they cannot be repaired in Russia.

Thanks melmothtw, out of interest how can you tell that this is footage of a screen rather than footage taken through a glass window?

It makes no sense that there were people in those offices at 2 am waiting to capture the event on video, and showing no reaction when a drone flew over the Kremlin and exploded (even for a false flag), and much more likely they were recording the footage from the CCTV cameras on the corner of the roof that they had already seen. Just IMO.

Not being in Moscow or Putin's inner circle, I 'know' as much as the next person.

For a false flag to stand up to any scrutiny, it has to be credible. It makes no sense to have a group of people in an office at 2 am, waiting for an attack they are not supposed to know is coming, and then displaying absolutely no emotion when a drone flies overhead and explodes over the Kremlin just across the square from them. Occam's Razor should point you in the direction of this being CCTV footage that they have filmed from a computer monitor.

I would imagine some Russian clerk is dusting off old locations of Soviet shelters in given areas to try to locate possible active sites.

Personally the good thing is it is on Russian TV, which must be a wake up call to the Moscow****es that what they have been fed for over a year is possibly all lies as Moscow is now being attacked and their safe little lives no longer are.

Can somebody tell me who is paying for PMC Wagner - ignoring the convicts obviously. They are referred to as a mercenary force and past reports of African involvement indicated that they were well-paid by Russian standards. Who then is paying them here ? Is it Prighozin himself speculating on prestige and money-making opportunities later ? It would make no sense for it to be the Russian Army who are apparently working to keep them short of supplies, so who is it ?

Thus meaning that Prighozin is financing his "war" himself ? If he has 20 000 paid fighters, that represents a pretty big monthly pay-roll. Since he apparently already had a seat at Putin's table pre-war, I wonder what prize he is aiming for ? The only one that seems to justify the bet would be Putin's chair, and that would be enormously dangerous as soon as Vlad realised this, however since he (Pr ) is still above ground, i have to think that is not the target.

EDIT: Won't these gold mines now be under threat from one side or the other in the current civil-war ? Ironic if that conflict were to have a major positive influence for Ukraine !

From the New York Times today:
A car bombing wounded a prominent Russian nationalist writer and killed his driver on Saturday, state media reported, the second high-profile incident in Russia in less than a week that the authorities referred to as a terrorist act.

The state-run Tass news agency said that the writer, Zakhar Prilepin, was injured but conscious. Preliminary information showed that an explosive device had been planted under Mr. Prilepin’s car in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, Tass reported (https://tass.com/emergencies/1614451), but did not say who was believed to be behind the attack.

"https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/05/06/ukraine-himars-software-rockets-russia-jam/ ( may be pay-walled )

Ukraine has been forced to update the software on its Himars rockets (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/10/06/ukraines-newest-weapon-special-himars-rockets-can-devastate/) because Russian forces have learned to jam their GPS guidance systems.

Considered one of Ukraine’s most impactful weapons and credited with helping to turn the tide of the war against Russia, Himars have become less effective over the past few months, CNN reported, citing a group of US, British and Ukrainian sources.

One Pentagon source described the effort to outwit Russian electronic warfare experts (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2023/02/23/west-scrambles-top-secret-jamming-technology-counter-russia/) who have been ordered to counter Himars as a game of “cat and mouse”.

The first Himars systems arrived in Ukraine in June 2022 and had an immediate impact on the battlefield (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/29/ukraine-himars-strike-melitopol-counter-offensive/). With a range of up to 60 miles – three times that of most regular artillery – they were able to hit Russian command headquarters and supply depots miles behind the front lines.

Military analysts said that Himars set up Ukraine’s rapid recapture of territory held by the Kremlin around Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine in August and Kherson city in Nov (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/11/11/ukraine-news-russia-war-kherson-retreat-latest-news-putin/)

An intelligence leak from the Pentagon this year showed that the US and Ukraine were giving “high priority” to tracking down and destroying Russian Zhitel R-330Zh jamming stations, which are often deployed in military trucks, ahead of Ukraine’s much-talked-about counteroffensive (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/05/05/ukraine-counteroffensive-russia-bakhmut-watch-defence-putin/).

“We will continue to advocate/recommend that those jammers are disrupted/destroyed to the maximum extent possible,” CNN quoted a document from the Pentagon intelligence leak as saying.

The Kyiv-based Ukrainskaya Pravada newspaper reported in April how Ukrainian special forces were mounting missions deep into Russia-controlled areas to hunt for jamming systems and relay their position back to artillery to destroy.

The leaked intelligence report also said that the jammers disabled other “smart munitions” such as GPS-guided shells fired by howitzers, and aerial bombs dropped by warplanes, that have been fitted with the US Joint Direct Attack Munition kit, which converts standard unguided bombs into precision weapons.

Gracious me: I watched the whole Service and did not see the Ukrainian flag. I hope that many in the rest of the world saw the significance.

My small role today was bell-ringing: we rang two new call-changes, Orb and Sceptre, in addition to the traditional Kings sequence. The band dressed in blue white and red, and fizz was consumed ....... bell ringers have a long tradition of a tipple in the ringing chamber.

Prigozhin explicitly announced the termination of PMC Wagner's participation in the war effective immediately, citing the loss of battle-worthiness due to significant losses caused (he claims) by MoD's artificial throttling of supply of munitions to Wagner.

Says only 10% of required rounds provided to Wagner as of May 1 (down from 30% as of 2023), leading to unsustainable losses.

Says remaining troops will be parked for recovery and retraining at bases in Russia "until danger to Russia is gone"….

Russian Su-35 intercepts Polish L410 TURBOLET over Black Sea

A Russian Su-35 fighter jet attempted to intercept the Polish Border Guard L410 TURBOLET aircraft participating in the MMO Western Black Sea 2023 mission.

This is a joint operation conducted by Romania and coordinated by Frontex. Poland, Spain, and Sweden participate in it, along with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA).

The incident occurred on Friday, May 5, at about 13:20 near the Romanian coast in the area designated for the mission.

The Russian Su-35 entered the MMO Western Black Sea 2023 mission zone in radio silence and carried out aggressive actions against the Polish aircraft.

The Polish Border Guard reported that the Russian fighter jet flew three times at a dangerous distance from the Polish L410 TURBOLET.

The crew noted that the distance was about 5 meters. Because of this, the Polish aircraft experienced severe turbulence. As a result, the crew lost altitude and partially lost control.

The plane was levelled and safely landed at Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, 20 km from the city of Constanta.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense (https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0382As8qjeWbdM1TuAV9n3UujsVhSqc9yn VmjNn4CRaRro24hjwKvmrBJXfibvmzWml&id=100064654003316&mibextid=Nif5oz) reported that two fighter jets of the Romanian and the Spanish Air Force were notified by NATO`s Combined Air Operations Centre in Torrejón and were ready to intervene in the incident.

“The aggressive actions of a military aircraft of the Russian Federation against an unarmed aircraft of the Frontex mission monitoring migration risk in the Black Sea is completely unacceptable. This incident is further evidence of the provocative approach of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea,” the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated….

Igor Girkin is very pessimistic today. He says it is time to start thinking about preventing Russia from falling apart because military defeat is near.

Translation:

Regular readers and listeners should remember the assessment of the situation that I laid out (and expressed) last winter. One of the theses was: "If the necessary national measures for the successful conduct of the war are not taken before May, we will not be able to win this war.

I state: NO MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN. Neither organizational nor personnel. The goals of the war have not been determined, and the inhabitants of the Planet of the Pink Ponies (PRP) have not understood that this war will be fought until one side is victorious.

Accordingly, since there is no goal, there is no strategy. No strategy - no conscious work on its implementation.

But the enemy has a strategy from the beginning and is being implemented with all its might. More and more successfully since the Kremlin is "playing giveaway" with an inexplicable enthusiasm and childlike confidence in the ultimate "contract" that is comfortable for the elderly Ponies, Elephants, and Unicorns.

Now we have to think about how to preserve the state, the country and the people in a situation of impending military defeat.

And, yes - even for a "worthy non-fatal defeat" (in which our enemies will be forced to abandon their plans for the complete fragmentation of Russia and the elimination of its sovereignty) we will have to fight long and hard. Harder and longer than it would have been if we had fought to win decisively from the outset.

And the longer the occupants of the PRP will linger in the "sweet languor" of confidence in their peaceful and happy old age (which has long come for most of the VIPs) - the less chance that in the end the Russian ship will manage to get out of the military storm and systemic crisis, without sinking (after a long and bloody troubles) into history.

One thing we have little knowledge of is the extent to which many Russians are opposed to the actions of their government. Only clues we have are from the many tens of thousands that have fled Russia for places like Georgia, the handful of young Russian vloggers that try and give a more balanced view of Russian people and the increasing incidence of what look to be sabotage events. I don't believe Ukraine is behind the majority of these explosions and fires deep inside Russia. I think it's dissidents. We never get to hear about them though. The Russian government has a very effective media suppression organisation.

We look on some of its output as being crazy but a large proportion of older Russians believe every lie they are told. Maybe there will be another Russian revolution. Worries me if I'm honest. Much as Putin's downfall would be good for Ukraine it would plunge Russia back into the madness that followed the fall of the Soviet Union. That madness unleashed thousands of hardened criminals on the rest of the world. I fear another collapse would do the same but would be worse. All the very rich Russians that would be free from the control Putin exerts could cause mayhem around the globe.

Presumably until such time as all the "European" air 'forces' between them can manage to rumble up enough operational fighters to actually provide a Coast Guard and Border Patrol aircraft operating in free international airspace with an escort.
It doesn't send a very impressive message, does it?

Igor Girkin is very pessimistic today. He says it is time to start thinking about preventing Russia from falling apart because military defeat is near.

Girkin is unduly optimistic in the state of affairs of Russia IMHO. The potential for the acceleration of the collapse of the federation from Vlads vulgar vacation has already been highlighted, recall the conference last year where the vassal states ignored Russia? Note China and Kazakh voting in the UN on Russia's aggression? Vlad threw away the outlying member states youth to feed his ego, that comes with a cost. Vlad has shown his military prowess is about on a par with Lord Farquard, and he is limited to criminal acts rather than military tactics.

With or without F-16's (preferably with) Ukraine remains committed to the removal of it's pest infestation, whereas Russian air superiority amounts to crashing into UAVs and breaking international law with the TurboLet unlawful interference. On a par with Lukashonky's unlawful actions against a civil airliner some time ago.

A breakup of Russia will be pretty messy, it is 100 years overdue to get Moscow to stop abusing the satellite states for the myth of border security. The wash-up poor 91 was untidy, this time round, the world has a good idea of what is exported from Russia in times of stress. Russians broke this program, they get to have a fair bit of the lifting of fixing this one too. Russia will not accept guidance in their internal affairs, something that is overlooked when considering the mess that arose post 91, they need to get a Russian solution to a Russian problem.

Well, not to make light of the sacrifice, but unless the Russian people would be willing to stand up and stop what’s happening, it makes little difference what their opinion of it is. Standing by instead of standing up practically amounts to complicity. Again, I do not make light of the life and death stakes of standing up, but they would not be the first people of courage in history to do so.

One can only relish the fear, trepidation and now sheer paranoia with which this once great nation will be anticipating events of May 9 tomorrow, the traditional day for their vast bombastic display of military might (or rather, military probably can't) in the aftermath of recent events.
The sight of a real disruption would be a major triumph and highlight for humanity, if only with some drones loaded with yellow and blue paint, hurting no-one...What a gigantic coup that would be!

And so what? It's still an attack on a non-military target and, even worse, on a target whose purpose was to save lives. Don't the 'rules of war' say not to attack ambulances, hospitals, and all sorts of other things with a red cross on them? The Russkies are disgusting and it will take a long time to erase the stain of their conduct.

The good news is the 11th round of sanctions is aimed at stopping such circumvention via 3rd party neighbouring countries.

The bad news is that every decision to add a product or country needs to be approved by all 27 EU capitals - and Hungary is sure to veto….

Trade with Armenia and Georgia has doubled. Trade with Kyrgistan increased by almost 1000%, and trade with Belarus increased by 77%….

I suspect many would be surprised to discover just how many countries are circumventing sanctions, including our own. one might as well try to block each individual hole in a cullender while the water is still draining through.

When sanctioned stuff from a manufacturer is dispatched to a client, the goods may be accepted into the clients operation, or it may be relabeled and packaged before being shipped to a different "facility", which may itself, have the freedom to ship to a sanctioned destination.

It has happened throughout history, and continues today. Everything has a price.

Not curious, just a sign of an excellent translation: you should always aim to capture the essence of the original, not just transpose words. It becomes more difficult when balancing the accuracy of the words against the value of the stylistic elements ( here the rhyme )

I find it rather humbling to see how individuals (not governments) find such brilliant ways to say "К черту Россию," "poshel na khuy."

I sincerely hope the more tardy members of NATO pull their collective noses out of the trough and implement the sanctions and supply Ukraine with everything they need.
In the near future the world will look back fondly on those who stood squarely with Ukraine and despise the Quisling leaders of states that dragged their feet.

On a side note, perhaps the Ukrainians don't need a counteroffensive at the moment. They are awaiting the hardening of the ground, the supply of more tanks that arrive in June and most importantly, the Russians seem to be pulling back in several areas through fear alone.

Can't see why there should be any insurmountable problems. Ukraine has an Air Force whose ground personnel can be trained in the required skills, just as their soldiers have been trained to use Western tanks, artillery and anti-aircraft systems.
