The Assault Breacher Vehicle or ‘ABV’ is (as of 2018) the United States’ latest Combat Engineering Vehicle or ‘CEV’. It is built on the hull of the US Military’s currently serving Main Battle Tank (MBT), the M1 Abrams (https://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/US/M1_Abrams.php). CEVs were a concept made famous by the British in the Second World War with the AVRE (https://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2-gb-churchill-avre/) (Armored Vehicle Royal Engineers), and since then, similar vehicles have been a part of every major army. The ABV is the first of such vehicles to see service with the US military since the M60 (https://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/US/M60_Patton.php) based M728 CEV was retired from service in the mid-to-late 1990s, and this vehicle’s direct predecessor, the remotely operated M1 Abrams-based M1 Panther II (https://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/us-modern-m60a3-panther-m1-panther-ii-mdcvs/), was retired from service in the late 2000s.

I absolutely don't understand why the Russians initially all group aroundthe BTR for cover: that's the aiming-point for the Bradley.

Germany to investigate Russia’s apparent interception of military talks on Ukraine

It shouldn't take them much time to investigate - unless they need time to concoct a less embarrassing explanation.. The following linked report says that requests for secure transmission links - even at the operational level - have been refused for decades and Web-Ex ( although known to be very weak in its security protocols ) has been frequently used by high-ranking military, feeling they had little option.

For far too long requests from the army to the Defnce Ministry to buy the necessary systems have been refused with comments such as " Just how do you expect to buy and pay for such equipment in peace-time " ? This striking episode about the hypothetical delivery of Taurus cruise-missiles to Ukraine is a painful example of how this policy has now backfired.

A Russian bridge has suffered damage after an explosive attack, apparently it was a main supply route for ammunition.

Saboteurs blew up a key bridge in Russia (https://metro.co.uk/tag/russia/?ico=auto_link_news_P1_LNK1), disrupting one of Vladimir Putin (https://metro.co.uk/tag/vladimir-putin/?ico=auto_link_news_P1_LNK2)’s routes to transport military cargo (https://metro.co.uk/2024/03/02/putins-home-city-hit-drone-called-a-killer-navalny-funeral-20385222/?ico=mosaic_tag).

An explosion – caused by a homemade explosive device – rocked the bridge over the Chapaevka River, near the city of Samara, on the border with Kazakhstan, just after 6am local time.

Located on the Volga river in the southwest, the region (https://metro.co.uk/2024/03/01/putin-ordered-secret-service-stop-navalnys-funeral-turning-insurrection-20382431/?ico=mosaic_tag) is a heavy industry hubs.

It is understood that the bridge was used to transport military cargo, in particular engineering ammunition produced by the Polymer JSC plant.

A statement from Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (GUR) read: ‘The railway bridge was blown up in Russia. Train traffic is paralysed.

‘The power steering confirms that the railway bridge across the Chapaevka River in the Samara region was disabled.

‘The structures were damaged as a result of the explosion.’

Train traffic on the bridge has been suspended, with four trains currently being hit with delays.

No casualties have been reported, but traffic over the bridge has been suspended, the Russian Railways said, describing the incident as ‘illegal interference’.

Russia has reported a series of attacks on its industrial and logistics infrastructure in recent months – all blamed on Ukraine.

I do think this is partly in response to Fico’s “allegiance” rather than anything else and he is learning a valuable lesson from it, lie with the devil then you may well have to worry that the devil may bite you. No one else has ambitions to hit your infrastructure.
Pali I do hope everything will be ok and that your country will get some defence back to protect it, I also hope things are well with you.

Pro-Ukraine Slovaks are laughing at Fico, when he complains – "Who will protect our nuclear power plants now?" – we tell him, that he should negotiate with attackers for peace and not escalate situation with active defence. We also hope that EU will stop any funding of our country.

There are still attempts to help Ukraine by private fundraising, most of the donors are Czechs but Slovaks contribute quite a lot too. Last time there was a goal to collect money for 10.000 drones, but donors exceeded the target and delivered 13.500 of them. Here is another fundraising campaign "Gift for Putin" and over 872.000€ was collected already: https://www.darcekpreputina.eu/kampane/drony-pro-dobrovolniky-na-ukrajine

Major news! CEO of pro-Trump, pro-MAGA propaganda outlet Newsmax, Christopher Ruddy, is urging Mike Johnson to put the Ukraine aid bill to the Floor for a vote.

“Biden is bad, but Putin and Iran are infinitely worse.”

https://www.newsmax.com/ruddy/ruddy-ukraine-speaker-mike-johnson/2024/03/03/id/1155754/

…we are now at a turning point with Ukraine. Russia is advancing and apparently rapidly.Biden administration incompetence and their slow-walking of aid in the past two years, has put Ukraine in a most dangerous spot.

Ukraine just lost over 45 square miles of territory to Russia in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, Russia is said to be preparing for a major offensive against Ukraine this spring.

At the same time Israel is facing war on multiple fronts. Israel, like Ukraine, desperately needs funding.

Both are critically important for U.S. security interests.

House Foreign Affairs Chair Michael McCaul said (https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/michael-mccaul-putin-ukraine/2023/04/09/id/1115545/) our earlier aid packages to Ukraine sent a strong signal to China not to invade Taiwan. But, he noted, failing to support Ukraine now, sends the opposite message.

Mike Johnson has been right to demand accountability from the Biden administration on their disastrous actions. Biden has yet to offer a strategic plan — and an exit strategy for Ukraine.

With Israel, the White House strategy is focused on limiting Israel's ability to defend itself, crazy as that sounds.

Biden may be bad, but Putin and the Iranian mullahs are off-the-charts worse.

In almost every speech he has made since Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine over two years ago, Putin has made clear his nation is at war with the U.S. and the West.

Putin sees Ukraine as just a stopping point. I put nothing past Putin and believe if he is not stopped, he will continue, perhaps even escalating to nuclear weapons.

Just this past week, Poland's foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, made a public plea to Johnson to pass funding, suggesting that if Ukraine falls, NATO itself could see an attack. Sikorski directed his comment (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/west-must-help-ukraine-more-prevent-spillover-polish-fm-says-2024-02-26/) "personally to Speaker Mike Johnson: please let democracy take its course. Please let's pass this to a vote."

I believe the best way to deal with Russia's danger is to show resolve: punch back hard.

I do not favor a larger war with Russia. I don't want to "defeat" Russia. I don't believe in forever wars. But I believe Ukrainians are dying for their freedom. It's a noble cause that, in reality, protects us and our freedom.

We should send them aid.…

Re Explosions reported in Kerch, bridge is closed.

My thoughts on hitting the bridge is they only really need to take down the railway one, as most of the armour comes into Crimea on flatbeds, having to unload them and then drive them all over the bridge would be a logistics nightmare.

Personally I see this attempt at trying to avoid the attempts to go around the speaker, because if they manage that and destroy his credibility as speaker his position will become tenuous and Trump will lose his main mouthpiece in trying to dictate what the Government can do. Followed by an update on the Teixeira case. Note it’s the defence pushing for just 11 years. Not sure how much of that you have to serve before being eligible for parole in the USA.

Grauniad:Jack Teixeira, who leaked classified documents about Russia’s war in Ukraine onto the online chat service Discord, has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Prosecutors said they would seek nearly 17 years in prison for Teixeira, a Massachusetts air national guard member.

A defence attorney said he would push for a sentence of 11 years, describing Teixeira, 22, as a “kid” whose youth was partly to blame for his conduct.

"Because we are at war, and because we can" make sense, but I get the extra feeling that Ukraine is now getting their own back for the high-handed way their little Navy was treated by a superior Russian Navy force in that famous incident when trying to enter the Sea of Azov some years back.

It depends on its range, how long it has loitered in an area awaiting the target etc, and I would imagine they keep its actual range quite for obvious reasons, no point in telling them where they can operate with impunity.

Considering one of their goals was a land bridge to Transnistria and a joining it up to "Russia", they can't even get that right on the map

An absolutely perfect example of "The 1700km Duvet": UK is safe because Russia will have to come through the Baltic States, Finland, bits of Poland, cross the Baltic, parts of Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and THEN the North Sea. So we're SAFE!!!! Close to sacrificing Estonia.

Actually, do you know what this is? It's a "John Reid Moment". I know what John Reid meant to say, but the quote came out, "we hope not to fire a shot" in Afghanistan. Yeah, right. This is Grant Shapps making the same mistake: a comment made primarily for the domestic market but which might well backfire at home over the next years.

But if I were 🇪🇪, 🇱🇻, or 🇱🇹, I'd be SERIOUSLY worried about UK committment and capabilities. Ask why every Baltic State says a shooting war with 🇷🇺 is a probability…..

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/iran-supply-russia-ballistic-missiles-grant-shapps-defence-secretary-bl33mth2t

Shapps said he did not see a need to start training British citizens in case of war. “Estonia are right on the border, at the front line essentially...The UK is an island; we’re not in that situation. Nor do we see an immediate danger of invasion.”

ISW: https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-march-5-2024

Russian aircraft appear to be continuing to conduct a relatively high volume of glide bomb strikes in Ukraine despite Ukrainian officials’ reports that Ukrainian forces have downed several bomber aircraft in recent weeks.

Forbes reported on March 4 that Russian Su-34 aircraft, escorted by Su-35 aircraft, are conducting one hundred or more sorties per day to conduct glide bomb strikes on Ukrainian positions at a range of 25 miles (about 40 kilometers).[14]

The New York Times reported on March 5 that Russian tactics are shifting to intensify operations in the air domain and that Russian forces’ “more aggressive” air support on the front lines has helped Russian forces to advance recently in eastern Ukraine.[15]

These reports suggest that the Russian Air Force is maintaining a high tempo of fixed-wing air missions in Ukraine and is possibly willing to tolerate risks to fixed-wing aircraft, likely because the Russian command may have decided that the positive effects generated by such air operations outweigh the costs associated with flying such missions.

Russian forces used glide bomb strikes to tactical effect in their seizure of Avdiivka in mid-February and are likely attempting to replicate such effects to support ongoing offensive operations elsewhere on the front. ISW cannot independently verify Ukrainian reports of the shootdowns of several Su-34 aircraft in recent weeks.

Forbes also reported that Ukrainian forces are using French-provided AASM Hammer glide bombs after France started supplying Ukraine with 50 of these bombs per month in January 2024.[16]

Forbes noted that Ukrainian forces previously conducted strikes with US-provided Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) glide bombs, but the supply of these bombs has halted due to the recent lack of US aid provisions to Ukraine.

Former-Army General and current President of Czechia, Petr Pavel stated today that he is in Support of discussions within NATO and with other European Countries about a “Coalition of the Willing” which would provide Ukraine with anything that it needs to Defeat Russia including the Deployment of NATO Troops into Ukraine in a Non-Combatant Role. Good luck getting 32 nations to sign up to a NATO op. A coalition of the willing is more or a six-pack or twelve-pack of bilateral (nation by nation) support to Ukraine (which is well covered supported under articles in the UN Charter). Also, explain to me again how you send soldiers to Ukraine in a non-combat role during a war? That's no way to treat your soldiers. Didn't anyone learn anything from Former Yugoslavia?
Feminists were upset because now they got equal treatment and will get conscripted and LGBT+ got upset because government only said "men and women" in their statement. First world problems strike again.

As to conscription: if you invest in good training, conscripted soldiers can perform well.

A talking head on the Telly said something interesting, if the Greek PM had been injured/killed, could Article 5 be invoked? I looked at the charter (with the understanding there could be amplifying documentation that rules it out) but Article 5 is sufficiently ambiguous that an argument can be made for yes.

Had the Greek PM been a victim:

1 An attack in Europe. Yup.
2. While not in a NATO country, it would have been an attack on the head of state of a NATO country.

I think it would be a stretch to say the Greek PM getting whacked could lead to anything beyond strongly worded condemnation, but the language of the document is sufficiently broad that it could be interpreted as a trigger for article 5.

Anyone want to send their nation’s leaders to Ukraine with a GPS transmitter on their head to test the theory? I can think of a couple I’d like to send.

Russia's recruiting procedure. Signing up for jobs in Russia, Germany or Dubai, young men have been ‘made to join the Russian military’, their families say
Azad Yousuf Kumar, 31, left his home in the Indian region of Kashmir in December to take a job as a domestic worker in Dubai, paying an agent he met through YouTube 300,000 rupees (£3,000) as an advance on his pay. But instead, his family says, he was sent on to a military training camp in Russia, where he was shot in the leg during an exercise, and then dispatched to a Russian unit in Ukraine...
In India, several cited a YouTube channel, Baba Vlogs, which is run by Faisal Khan – an Indian recruiter operating out of Dubai – as the platform that had duped them. Khan posted a series of videos to his 300,000 followers from the streets of St Petersburg promoting jobs in Russia as military helpers, categorically stating that they would be safe and not sent to the frontlines, and that this could also help them get permanent residency in Russia.

France and Moldova to sign defence pact amid fears of Russian destabilisation

PARIS, March 6 (Reuters) - Moldova and France will sign a defence cooperation accord on Thursday as part of the West's efforts to strengthen the former Soviet state's capabilities amid what they fear are increasing efforts by Russia to destabilise Moldova.

Moldova, a western neighbour of Ukraine, has a tiny defence budget and has long had tense relations with Moscow, which have worsened as Chisinau backs Ukraine in the war against Russia…..

The French presidency said in a statement on Wednesday that defence and economic cooperation accords would be signed when President Emmanuel Macron meets his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu in Paris.

He would underline his "support for the independence, sovereignty and security of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine," it said.

The two countries reached an initial accord in September that covers training of military personnel, regular defence dialogue and intelligence sharing.
The letter of intent also said Paris would support Chisinau's efforts to see how to develop its military capabilities, including the possible purchase of anti-air defence capacities similar to France's Mistral system.

At the time, Moldova announced it had bought Thales-made GM200 radar enabling it to improve aerial surveillance to detect and track targets moving from low to very high altitude.

France's defence minister said it would carry out an audit of Moldova's air defence means to help strengthen the security of Moldovan skies.

In parallel to Sandu's visit, Western states will hold an audio call hosted by France to discuss increasing support for Ukraine, but also Moldova.….

Moldova needs bilateral security agreements with as many EU and NATO states as possible, it is the only thing that will stop Vlad adding another stiletto heading towards European interests. The missiles used in the naval AEGIS system are larger ( 7 m ) than Patriots ( 5.8 m )and obviously the carrier battle group with its Hawkeye AWACS and all the many surface radars has many many multiples of the computing and detection power availabe to the land-based Patriots, so at first sight it seems feasible.. Maybe its unnecessary as I'm certain the DoD and USN rate the carrier battle group as their most precious asset, and therefore anything good used elsewhere would be incorporated PDQ.
It's not so much about the size of the rocket, though the whole of the auxiliary equipment needed, including another phased array radar unit requiring a 360-degree view and the constellation containing several masts. I also have the impression, that although the Patriot system can do "self-protect", there is limited protection possible against a Zircon coming in (near) vertically. The debris will hit your ship anyway, including the exploding warhead.

The early Zircon versions didn't go Mach 8+, but the current ones do, which seems to be above the limit to intercept, according to Western experts.

This is a great story. Czech volunteers delivered humanitarian help in active war zones and they witnessed how an old babushka gave eggs to ZSU soldiers. Fighters took it and she received some canned food in return. Czechs were amazed and asked soldiers why they took the eggs when it was everything she had? And they answered that she is old and weak yet she still wants to fight against invaders and contribute on her terms. Knowing that soldiers will eat the eggs gives her a purpose.

A Czech businessman Jan Bárta heard this story and was so moved that he decided it is his turn to do something about Russian invasion. He wrote this status on Twitter and promised to donate 100 dollars for every retweet and he really kept the promise. He paid more than 50 million Czech crowns to purchase drones for Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Great inspiration, contribute any way you can.

It does not inspire any hope at all for a happy or peaceful future and clearly suggests that leopards do not change their spots. It's a sobering experience.

So, worded simply: "We have ****** up with our three-day blitzkrieg against Kyiv and had to withdraw from entire north Ukraine following severe losses and a complete failure of the 'special military operation' - but you nonetheless have to roll over, admit a humiliating defeat, render yourselves almost totally defenseless before Russia, stay away from NATO and any military cooperation with any Western nations, never get any Western weapons to defend yourself, govern your sovereign nation the way we tell you, and that goes with formal 'security guarantees' under which not a single 'guarantor' will ever go to war for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, we'll give you absolutely nothing in return - neither Crimea nor Donbas, no indemnities for ruined cities and mass graves, not even formal 'assurances' of non-aggression - it's not that we spent a year and a half amassing 180,000 troops against Ukraine and lying through our teeth -- only to eventually unleash a grand war under the dumbest, the flimsiest, and the most ridiculously false pretexts ever. And, of course, be sure that it won't take much time for us to AGAIN wipe up our ass with this worthless piece of paper, so we'll recover from the initial shock of the failure, fix our mistakes, and invade Ukraine again (because you failed to speak Russian loud enough in your courts of justice!), with far greater success -- because you morons were seriously thinking we'd give you 'PEACE' if you just leave Ukraine defenseless and us totally free to try again." Here's your 'peace treaty' that Vladimir Putin was willing to give.

And, of course, this draft is dated April 15, 2022 - the days when Russia had generally completed regrouping to launch a new major offensive in Ukraine's east. As you probably remember, we were only counting the days to when it began. The war's new phase, the nightmarish Battle of Donbas, was launched in full scale as soon as April 17-18, 2022. Russia never wanted any 'peace' with Ukraine unless it was about a total Ukrainian surrender and its demise as an independent nation. Following the unexpected failure at Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, it tried to take a break as the 'special military operation' had gone off the rails. Yet, the Kremlin's primal goal made it impossible for Russia to issue at least remotely acceptable terms of peace & co-existence with Ukraine. No matter what Ukraine would offer as 'concessions' or provisions for reaching a 'middle ground' to stop the war -- Moscow could offer nothing but 'Surrender, render yourselves defenseless, make things easy for us next time soon."

Russia had to narrow down its goals against Ukraine and switch from the failed 'special military operation' to a full-scale, protracted war on Ukraine that is now entering its third year. And all this blood and horror is for the sake of the megalomanic ego and lust for power of just a handful of old KGB bureaucrats who would rather kill millions of people in a senseless criminal war than admit their failure.

Ukrainian lenses were selected from thousands of options. Their development began in 2021. Prototypes were created in early 2022, and the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine did not stop the team. Some members even contributed to the work remotely from the trenches.

At night there was a drone attack on Taganrog, Russia. The attack was most likely carried out on an airport/factory where a Russian A-50 had previously been spotted. A-50 was spotted on the satellite imagery published by @cxemu and appeared on the airfield between 28-29th of February 2024.

The 🇬🇧British Foreign Minister David Cameron said that London is ready to help 🇩🇪Berlin solve the problem with the supply of Taurus missiles to 🇺🇦Ukraine.

The proposed solution involves the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles by Germany to Great Britain, and in return, London will provide Ukraine with additional Storm Shadow missiles.

This proposal is a response to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's refusal to directly supply missiles to Ukraine.

I do wonder if the German Airforce Officers knowingly spoke openly on an insecure line. Surmising that the Russians would spout off about it as a coup for their intelligence systems.
Meanwhile the Luftwaffe Officers were able to galvanise the Government into doing something with the Taurus Missiles, show the Government that they are chronically underfunded as they have no secure conference comms - and pointing out the threat that Russia is listening and is a clear and present danger.

As the UK is living rent free in the Russian psyche, then inferring there are members of the Regiment will have Vlad and his pnumpties looking over their shoulders even more.

A good read. Just a short part of it.

A general expectation is that Netanyahu will come to the end of his political career when the present war – actually the fifth between Israel and the Arabs – comes to an end. Putin is set to be in power at least until 2030, but even his time seems to be running out. He has not won his war of aggression against Ukraine, initiated in 2014. He has not conquered Kyiv or Odesa, not even Kharkiv and Kherson. The magnificent Ukrainians, few and badly armed, have stopped – yes, stopped – what was considered the world’s second-strongest army, a victory so unbelievable that many in the West began to fantasise about what could happen next, and consequently, now as the war, very naturally, has stalemated, believe that the Ukrainians are facing a defeat. I do not believe in this doomsday scenario.

I expect another two or even four years of war, then a Ukrainian-European victory as the alliance behind Ukraine swings into a serious war economy. The bigger picture tells us already that the Russians are bogged down, suffering disastrous losses of men and material on the front, and that money is pouring out of the Kremlin coffers, and that the Russian public may be slowly waking up to the disaster that their rulers have created and are presiding over, rather nervously, I believe.

Polish President to Propose NATO Spends 3% of GDP on Defense

Polish President Andrzej Duda will propose that NATO member states raise the minimum level of defense spending to 3% of economic output in his talks with US President Joe Biden.

Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk are traveling to the US to meet Biden at the White House on Tuesday as Warsaw seeks reinforcement of the defense alliance’s eastern flank in the face of the war in Ukraine, Poland’s neighbor.

Duda, speaking before a meeting with Tusk’s government and party leaders, said he wants to propose raising the spending threshold from 2% in talks with all NATO members, including Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday.

“Nobody will dare to attack strong NATO, strong nations that will be able to defend their borders,” Duda said.

The proposal comes after Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner, has said he told a NATO ally during his presidency that he would encourage Russia “to do whatever the hell they want” to countries that didn’t meet the alliance’s defense spending obligations.

Possibly, although at the same time it would highlight weakness that such attacks were still happening. Let's hope that the rumour about A-50 crew is true and also that the drone strike on the hangar in Taganrog damaged an A-50 inside, but it is rather a large hangar and there were only one or two drones, I believe from the photos.
