maybe Google search on an android would stop some if you use say, A NY area code telephone search?

The thickest thing around would be the general command of the Russian Forces. They have not been overly bullet or blast proof to date, so miffbusta's may need to do a rerun on that experiment.

When the prisons are running short of supply of soon to be cold bodies to fill bags on back order, adding to the general excellence of the Russian logistics system, advancing from T80's T72's, towards T54's, when SU35's survive not at all, then perhaps the dear leader should rethink his retirement plan.

The prisoners that were taken on board and who against all odds survived to return have so far knocked off 28 locals on their return, which seems to ne an extra bonus for Vlads plan.

Note: the term "plan" is somewhat more suggestive of structured cognitive action. I'm not convinced that Vlad had any plan that extended beyond a triumphal procession into Kyiv on the 27th February 2022. Every action since then is lacking the necessary attributes and structure to be called a plan.

Here's a good article from the New York Times about the Ukrainian defeat of the Russian Navy. Although the NYT is paywall they do allow reading of 10 (?) articles each month for free. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/12/world/europe/ukraine-navy-admiral-black-sea.html

In a small, hidden office in the port city of Odesa, the commander of the Ukrainian Navy keeps two trophies representing successes in the Black Sea.

One is the lid from the missile tube used in April 2022 to sink the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/15/world/europe/russia-moskva-warship-ukraine-missiles.html), a devastating blow that helped chase Russian warships from the Ukrainian coast. On the lid is a painting of a Ukrainian soldier raising his middle finger to the ship as it bursts into flames.

The other is a key used to arm a British-made Storm Shadow missile that slammed into the headquarters of the Russian fleet in Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula.

Continued Russian milblogger discussion of widespread Russian infantry-led frontal assaults highlights the challenges Russia will face in using massed infantry assaults to offset the problems contributing to the current positional warfare identified by Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

One milblogger emphasized on November 11 that the Russian practice of conducting tactical assaults intended to storm Ukrainian fortified positions in forest areas of Donbas will not translate into a wider operational breakthrough anywhere on the front. The milblogger noted that there is no way to train enough Russian personnel for the intensive frontal assaults required for significant advances in Ukraine.

Another milblogger claimed that the Russian military is about to experience a "real renaissance of infantry combat" because there are fewer tanks, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and armored personnel carriers (APCs) close to the frontline.

A critical milblogger responded to the "infantry renaissance" comment and remarked that the comment is a negative reflection of Russian equipment losses and poor frontline coordination that has created a reliance on assault tactics.

A Russian Spetsnaz-affiliated Telegram channel additionally complained that the reliance on infantry-led frontal assaults is heavily attriting all Spetsnaz elements that have deployed to Ukraine because the Russian command has reportedly been using Spetsnaz forces for frontal assaults since the beginning of the war.

Spetsnaz forces are not meant to conduct such infantry-led assaults like standard Russian motorized rifle infantry, and some Russian sources are clearly frustrated with the ramifications of the misapplication of such Spetsnaz elements.

ISW has previously observed that Russian forces are increasingly relying on such infantry-led frontal assaults, likely to compensate for a lack of adequately trained personnel and due to widespread equipment losses….

The Russian General Staff appears to be relying heavily on frontal assaults as the predominant tactic in Ukraine as an important part of the Russian solution to the problems of "military parity" laid out by Zaluzhnyi's essay on the issue of "positional warfare."

It appears Russia is in a state of confusion,

LONDON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Two Russian state news agencies published alerts on Monday saying Moscow was moving troops to "more favourable positions" east of the Dnipro River in Ukraine, only to withdraw the information minutes later.

The highly unusual incident suggested disarray in Russia's military establishment and state media over how to report the battlefield situation in southern Ukraine.

The RBC news outlet quoted the defence ministry as saying: "The sending of a false report about the 'regrouping' of troops in the Dnepr (Dnipro) region, allegedly on behalf of the press centre of the Russian Ministry of Defence, is a provocation."

The Kremlin declined to comment, saying it was a matter for the military.

Last week, in a statement that Reuters could not independently verify, Russia's military said it had thwarted (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-says-it-thwarted-ukrainian-attempt-forge-bridgehead-river-dnipros-east-2023-11-10/) a Ukrainian attempt to create a bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Dnipro and on nearby islands.

Russia retreated a year ago from areas it had seized on the western bank of the Dnipro, including the regional capital Kherson. If Ukrainian forces succeeded in crossing the river and establishing a secure bridgehead, it would represent a major advance.

In a series of three alerts on Monday, the RIA state news agency said the command of Russia's Dnepr group of forces had decided to relocate troops to "more favourable positions" east of the Dnipro.

It said that, after the regrouping, the Dnepr force would release some troops to be deployed in offensives on other fronts.

RIA said the Russian military command had agreed with the Dnepr leadership's conclusions and ordered the relocation of troops to start.

Minutes later, RIA withdrew all three alerts without explanation.

Another state agency, TASS, published just one alert on troops regrouping to more favourable positions, and then withdrew it, saying it had been released in error. It apologised to its readers.

In the past, Russia has sometimes used similar phrasing about moving troops to more advantageous positions in order to describe retreats.

Russian state media have privileged access to official briefings and typically report major military announcements shortly before they appear in the Telegram channel of the defence ministry.

Ukraine has said little about its military operations on the east bank of the Dnipro. The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War said last week that Ukraine appeared to have conducted assaults across the Dnipro in Kherson region in mid-October, and noted that Russian military bloggers were reporting continued Ukrainian ground operations on the east bank.

In its latest update, the ISW reported that Ukrainian forces made a "marginal gain" on the east bank on Sunday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told Reuters in an interview (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/reuters-next-zelenskiy-says-ukraine-has-plan-continue-fighting-after-slow-2023-11-08/) last week that Ukraine's five-month-old counter-offensive was making some gradual progress in the south and east, including what he called "good steps near Kherson region".

Have they solved the 35mm shell supply? The Swiss were not willing to sell.

Yes and they have been supplying Ukraine already.

A first shipment of new ammunition for the Gepard antiaircraft tank is now headed for Ukraine. Per agreement, Rheinmetall AG of Düsseldorf has shipped a first lot of 35mm air defence ammunition as part of German support for Ukraine’s defensive struggle. By the end of this year, 40,000 rounds are to be produced and provided.

In Ukraine the shipments from Germany are eagerly awaited: with its 35mm twin guns, the Gepard has emerged as a decisive factor in the embattled nation’s fight to defend itself. The German government has made 46 of these antiaircraft tanks available, with another six to follow. For Ukraine, they play an essential part in the struggle to control its airspace, having proved highly effective in countering the kamikaze drones Russia uses to attack Ukrainian cities. They are almost permanently in action, making ammunition consumption correspondingly high.

Rheinmetall has long produced much of its ammunition for medium-calibre weapons in Switzerland; now, however, new production capacity for supplying the Gepard systems has been created in Germany, where a multimillion-euro figure has been invested in plant and equipment.

In February 2023 Boris Pistorius, the German defence minister, announced at a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group that capacity for producing ammunition for the Gepard would be created in Germany at Rheinmetall. A contract for the rapid delivery of a total of 300,000 rounds of ammunition for the antiaircraft tank had already been signed several days earlier. Owing to the urgency and high political relevance of the project, the pressure to complete the new facility was immense from day one, requiring a true technological and logistical tour de force.

In the words of Rheinmetall AG executive board chairman Armin Papperger, “We keep our promises. Just six months after signing the contract, we’ve already started delivery, as agreed. My sincere thanks go to the men and women of Rheinmetall who have done so much to make this project a success, even working on weekends. Our subcontractors and vendors deserve praise as well, having helped us to achieve what at first seemed impossible. The pressure to succeed was huge – but so was our commitment to getting the job done. We want to help the people of Ukraine. Every drone that’s shot down saves lives!”

The German government left no stone unturned in its effort to supply Ukraine with fresh ammunition, including abroad – albeit in vain. In Germany stocks of the ammunition had dropped to zero, as the Gepard systems had been retired from service some fifteen years earlier. Other countries declined to make available existing stocks of ammunition, citing either political considerations or constitutional restrictions.

In the end, it was a tightly woven intermeshing of expertise of Rheinmetall technicians and engineers in Switzerland, Germany and Italy that made creating the new production facility possible.

The problem: earlier tools for producing the original ammunition were simply no longer there. The solution turned out to be a mix of reverse engineering and adaptive development quite unlike anything seen before: existing 35mm ammunition from the main armament of an infantry fighting vehicle was modified for use in the Gepard. Making sure that the Gepard fire control unit could reliably recognize the ammunition was a special challenge.

Despite their excellent performance, the electronics and fire control technology of the aging antiaircraft tank – developed in the 1960s – proved to be a veritable black box. At the same time, the supply chain for the new ammunition had to be expanded in order to minimize as far as possible the Swiss value-added share.

As Armin Papperger puts it, “We have an unbeatable strength at Rheinmetall: namely, the broad-based expertise that comes with being a systems house. Whether in ammunition development, mechanical production and materials knowledge, in the development of air defence weaponry, in comprehensive live fire testing, in the design and construction of production facilities – everywhere our experts worked with tremendous drive and great personal commitment to complete the project. They knew how urgently Ukraine needed the ammunition and the sooner, the better.”

Following multiple tests at the Group’s proving ground at Unterlüss in Lower Saxony, the verification programme was concluded in May 2023 when the ammunition was successfully fired by a Gepard antiaircraft tank.

Meanwhile, at one of Rheinmetall’s civil sector plants in Neuss, an LAAP line was designed and subsequently built at a Group facility in Lanciano, Italy, before being transferred to Unterlüss. LAP stands for loading, assembly and packing, the process in which the cartridges are loaded with propellant; the various parts of the round are put together; and subsequently packaged. The propellant powder comes from Nitrochemie, by the way, another member of the Group.

A total of 40,000 rounds are to be delivered this year. Ukraine will be receiving 150,000 rounds each of two different types of ammunition. One of these is a subcalibre APDS-T munition containing heavy metal penetrators, and thus especially suitable for engaging hardened targets. Rheinmetall is also supplying Ukraine with conventional HEI-T high-explosive incendiary ammunition designed for bringing down typical air defence targets, e.g., aircraft and guided missiles.

Air Force: Ukraine adapts Soviet air defense systems to fire US missiles

Ukraine has successfully converted Soviet air defense systems to fire missiles produced by the United States, Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said (https://nv.ua/ukr/ukraine/events/viyna-v-ukrajini-radyanski-buki-pereobladnali-pid-amerikanski-raketi-novini-ukrajini-50367448.html) in an interview with Radio NV on Nov. 12.

"We have good results of the combat use of Buk-M1 anti-aircraft missile systems on the training ground in the United States, which have been converted and adapted to American missiles," Ihnat said.

Ukraine inherited Buk-M1 anti-aircraft systems from the Soviet Union, but the weapons typically use missiles that only Russia produces.

It is therefore necessary to look for ways to convert and modernize such systems to strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities, the spokesperson said.

The main systems used by Ukrainian air defense are the Buk-M1 systems, as well as the S-300 and S-125 systems, Ihnat told (https://nv.ua/ukr/ukraine/events/viyna-v-ukrajini-ukrajina-zaminit-radyanski-sistemi-pvo-na-suchasni-novini-ukrajini-50321932.html) NV in May. He emphasized that Ukraine must eventually replace all Soviet air defense systems with modern versions.

Reports emerged in January 2023 that the Ukrainian military had found a way to modify its Buk launchers to fire Sea Sparrow (https://kyivindependent.com/politico-us-to-give-ukraine-first-sea-sparrow-anti-air-missiles/) missiles.

Sea Sparrows can be launched from the sea or ground to intercept aircraft or cruise missiles. The U.S. and most allies use the ship-mounted version, but the reports indicated that Ukraine is expected to use the ground-launched version, currently only operated this way by Taiwan.

There are three hypotheses of varying likelihood for the release of the now-retracted reports of a #Russian regrouping on the east bank of #Kherson Oblast, discussed in the 🧵below.

More in tonight's update on https://isw.pub/UkrWar111323

ISW's analysis is compelling. Of the options, it is unlikely that such bland terminology would have been used by a spoofing action from Ukraine. It is consistent with the "advance to the rear" diminutive statements that high command would issue, think that there is some Russian general that is having his suicide arranged momentarily.

For Incheon style initiatives, Ukraine may not have much marine assault capability, heavy equipment positioning is a problem, but, the advent of highly effective man pads and ATGW gives capability that then is only lacking artillery support, which drones and the most recent rocketry give some solutions. Grinding out from the shores of the Dnipro delta may not be their best surprise to Vlad. Last retreat showed that Russia was no less incompetent at retreat than advance, which at least has a natural balance to it. Good at fertilising soil in foreign lands, not brilliant at sanitation in the Rodina.

Meanwhile back in Russia… family life goes on, that little kid really puts the boot in.

Laws on domestic violence were loosened in the recent years. It is OK to beat your wife unless you break her bones then it would be an offence. They did the change because police was overwhelmed by the cases when men beat their women (though officers mostly sided with men because "everybody knows women deserve it") so Putin made sure police will not be bothered too much. Alcohol abuse plays important role in this behaviour as well.

If I remember well, in average every 47 minutes a woman is killed in Russia by her husband in domestic violence.

Cruelty is a an important trait in Russian society, some scholars think it is a heritage since Golden Horde ruled Muscovy. Anyway, this explains the horrible deeds perpetrated on civilians in Ukraine or why they seem to accept the unthinkable losses during human waves infantry assaults.

BREAKING:
The US is targeting the Dark Fleet - this is BIG news!!

Reuters reports this evening that the U.S. Treasury Department has sent notices to #ship management companies requesting information about 100 vessels it suspects of violating Western sanctions on Russian oil, according to a source who has seen the documents.

At last there is action against the #DarkFleet and #GreyFleet!

The Group of Seven rich countries, the European Union and Australia imposed the $60 per barrel cap last December on sea-borne exports of #Russian crude to punish Moscow for its war on Ukraine. It bans Western companies from providing services such as transportation, insurance and financing for the oil sold above the cap. The price cap has caused a shift in global markets as #China and India purchase Russian oil, much of which had traditionally gone to Europe and other markets. A rally in global oil prices this year has meant much of Russian #oil has traded above the #cap.

In October 2023, the US has imposed sanctions on two companies shipping Russian oil, in its first enforcement of measures designed to choke off revenues to the Kremlin as continues its full-scale invasion of #Ukraine. The US Treasury department on said the two companies, based in the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, had used US-based shipping services while carrying Russian crude bought at a price greater than $60 per barrel, violating the oil price cap G7 countries imposed on Moscow last year.

The enforcement measures come amid G7 countries’ broader effort to restrict the flow of petrodollars to Russian president Vladimir Putin’s war chest. The group issued a statement on Thursday outlining the “risks of violating” the price cap rules.

A senior Treasury official said the Kremlin’s oil tax revenue was down 45 per cent from January to August this year compared with the same months in 2022. But Moscow has increasingly dodged sanctions on most of its oil exports, with almost three-quarters of Russian crude travelling without western insurance in August. U.S. officials have said the cap has imposed extra costs on Russia for a "ghost fleet" of aging tankers, longer voyages and reliance on non-Western maritime services that have cut into the revenues it can spend on the war.

The notices, sent by the Office of Foreign Assets Control to ship management companies in about 30 countries on Friday, represent the biggest step of its kind by the United States since Washington and its allies imposed the price cap last year aimed at restricting oil revenues to Moscow as punishment for its invasion of Ukraine, the source said. The requests for information are a routine step in sanctions investigations.

“Today’s action demonstrates our continued commitment to reduce Russia’s resources for its war against Ukraine and to enforce the price cap,” said US deputy Treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo. The new sanctions enforcement come as the Joe Biden administration tries to build pressure on the Kremlin for its war in Ukraine and to show support for Kyiv after Congress recently omitted more funding for the country in a stop-gap spending measure.

For those wondering how long the support in armaments will continue to Ukraine, keep an eye open for the output of the EU defense ministers' meeting which starts today. There may be changes, and there may not.

EU will probably miss the 1 million shells pledge/order is one tidbit coming out of that. (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/eu-miss-goal-1-million-shells-ukraine-germanys-pistorius-2023-11-14/)(Reuters) BRUSSELS, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The European Union will miss its target of supplying Ukraine with 1 million artillery shells and missiles by next March, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday.

Arriving at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels, Pistorius also questioned the wisdom of having set the target (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/eu-agrees-plan-send-million-artillery-shells-ukraine-2023-03-20/) in March this year, with a 12-month deadline.

Pistorius's comments were the first public admission by a senior European minister that the target would not be met, although diplomats and officials have been expressing scepticism privately for months about the goal.
Mid-term, looks like F-16 training will go on.

Viktor Olegovich [.....] has been increasingly blunt on the actions of Russia towards Ukraine. That started over a year ago, and has been ramping up, he is always the voice of dissent to the rest of the panelists and the bias of the presenters. He has reasoned arguments and provides facts, the others retort with propaganda without any exception I can recall. The odd dynamic is that Viktor is a return presenter, there seems to be movement under the duckpond that is not just air escaping from the duck butt (Aviation content: that was our SAR escort activities way back when).

There is a glimmer of sense from the inclusion of him still in the discussion. Still, having a fast inflating neck collar might be handy, 6 floor windows would be best avoided.

"...all we want is peace..." stated by the contrary panelists who support Vlads criminal enterprise and the war crimes perpetrated by Russia. What a crock of blyat. Peace existed until 2014 in Ukraine, until 1993 in Grozny... until 1996 in Georgia... Peace/Mir are not on the agenda of Russia's emperor. What is, are more 200's in glued together cardboard stuffed flak jackets returning home to be exchanged for a new refrigerator. The wife wins that she gets rid of the drunken boor and gets the utility of whitegoods, seems like a fair trade all up. A good place to store the rotting fish that Russia was providing in compensation when they ran out of Lada's to the Primosrk and Kamchatka regions.

Peace and tranquility will not be easily returned to the region, the Ukrainians remember the Holodomor, 90 years back, they are certain to recall Bucha and every crime that Russia perpetrated spreading mir about by bomb and bullet and blade. Russia has no interest in being a apart of a civilised world.

Denmark may block passage of Russian oil tankers to markets

Under new EU plans, the Financial Times reports, Denmark will be tasked with inspecting and potentially blocking Russian oil tankers passing through its waters.

By the way, about 60% of Russia's offshore oil exports are transported through the Baltic Sea - and they cross Danish straits on their way to international markets.

Ukrainain losses are being reported as an estimated 30,000 dead.

A Ukrainian civic group said it has confirmed the deaths of nearly 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers since Russia's February 2022 invasion by using open sources, and puts the total toll at more than 30,000.

Kyiv treats its losses as a state secret and officials say disclosing the figure could harm its war effort. A report in August by the New York Times, citing anonymous U.S. officials, put the Ukrainian death toll at close to 70,000.

Writing in the Ukrainian journal Tyzhden, historian Yaroslav Tynchenko and volunteer Herman Shapovalenko said Shapovalenko's Book of Memory project had confirmed 24,500 combat and non-combat deaths using open sources.

The real figure was likely higher, they added, noting that many of the 15,000 troops listed as missing were likely dead.

Reuters could not independently verify the figures.

"Obviously, the 24,500 names are not the final number of dead (deceased), but by our assessment it is no less than 70%," the authors wrote. "That is, the real number of dead (deceased) in combat and non-combat situations is more than 30,000 people."

Applying a 1:3 ratio, the authors also estimated that up to 100,000 troops had been wounded.

A spokesman for Ukraine's defence ministry told Reuters he could not comment on the figures.

The Book of Memory project, which has tracked Ukraine's war dead since Russia's first invasion in 2014, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tynchenko, in a message through his employer, the National Military History Museum of Ukraine, declined to comment on the article.

The article, published late on Tuesday, comes as Ukraine increasingly faces the prospect of fighting a long war with Russia.

Ukraine's top general wrote in the Economist earlier this month that the conflict was becoming static and attritional. A Ukrainian counteroffensive launched in June has made only incremental gains in the south and east.

The authors of the Tyzhden article said it was crucial to balance various estimates reported in Western media, which they described as given to "manipulation", with verifiable data.

Vladimir Sviridov, former commander of the 6th Army of the Russian Air Force and Air Defense Forces, and his wife were found dead.

The body of the 68-year-old general was found in his house in the village of Andzhiyevsky, Stavropol Krai. The body of his 72-year-old wife Tatyana was found next to him.

According to Russian Telegram channels, the spouses died about a week ago.

Representatives of the gas service took tests in the house and found no exceeding of the permissible concentration of harmful substances.

The cause of Vladimir and Tatyana Sviridov's death is unknown. Only one thing is clear - senior military officials and those close to the Kremlin continue to die mysteriously in Russia.

There must be some decent Russians somewhere. But they allow Putin and his henchmen send thousands of men into a death trap, believe incredible lies about Ukraine and Russia, and seem to gladly rape and pillage defenseless civilians whenever they can. If they had any decency at all, they would be up in arms against their criminal leadership and put an end to all this.

Hmmm. nothing like looking after ones troops... and this is nothing like it.

BREAKING:
Russian General Teplinsky sacrificed 76 soldiers to "distract" Ukrainians on the left bank

"The Cheka-OGPU learned that on November 10, 76 Russian servicemen were killed during an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
They decided to use them as a “distraction maneuver.” This fact is carefully hidden.

As the source said, on November 10, the command of the 35th separate motorized rifle brigade of the 41st combined arms army of the Central Military District received a combat order to march with the forces and means of two battalions to the Golopristansky district of the Kherson region.

This order was initiated by the headquarters of the Dnepr group with the aim of “misleading the Armed Forces of Ukraine” regarding the true intention of the command of the Russian Armed Forces in this area.

Based on the order received, the personnel of the 1st motorized rifle battalion of the 35th Motorized Rifle Brigade were loaded into a vehicle without proper equipment and, as part of two columns, left for the Gladkovka area.
While in Gladkovka, both columns of the 1st MSB were struck by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, as a result of which 76 servicemen were killed.
According to the source of the Cheka-OGPU, as part of the investigation into this fact, an investigation into the true causes of the incident is not being conducted.
An attempt is being made to conceal the fact of an obviously criminal order from the group’s command, due to which the military personnel found themselves in the role of a living target."

Shots of great power and precision and hide so as not to give the enemy time to target you. In Central Europe there would most likely be trees on both sides, you go out to a point with a good field of vision where the trees end, you shoot and come back.

Armenia will transfer Tochka-U tactical ballistic missile systems and Osa-AK anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine, Russian source Rybar claims.

According to Rybar, agreements on this may have been reached during a meeting between Armen Grigoryan, Secretary of Armenia's National Security Council and Ukrainian president’s powerful chief of staff, Andrii Yermak with the assistance of the Americans.

The exact number of available launchers and missiles is unknown: according to open sources, there were at least three, but according to Rybar, several more modernized Tochkas were transferred to the Armenians by Russia.

And all of them, along with an impressive ammunition supply (up to 200 missiles), could end up in Ukraine.

At the same time, the White House is actively pushing the issue of transferring the Osa-AK anti-aircraft missile systems, which are in service with the Armenian Armed Forces, to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Their number, taking into account losses in the Second Karabakh War, can be up to 30-40 units.

So, Vlad, how's the plan going so far?

Door #1: a 72-hour SMO, met with garlands of flowers from a gratefully "freed" populace, happy to receive the mir of Vlad in contrast to those pesky national socialists with a funny march and salute;
Door #2: out of Ladas to give away, out of body bags, grovelling to NOK to give aid and comfort to the Kremlin, a collection of bodies underneath open windows, and the 2nd greatest military force inside the Moscow beltway. Retirement looking grand.

CHP is Combined Heat and Power. You get electricity and district heating from the residual heat left in a thermal power plant. Makes the plant more efficient and is common in former Soviet satellite countries.
Also popular in Europe for heating large buildings but here often based on a gas fuelled combined cycle plant.

Wiki

"The Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) is a weapon developed by Boeing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing) and the Saab Group (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_Group) to allow Boeing's GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GBU-39_Small_Diameter_Bomb) (SDB), originally developed for use by aircraft, to be ground-launched from a variety of launchers and configurations. It combines the SDB with the M26 rocket (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M26_rocket), enabling it to be launched from ground-based missile systems such as the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M270_Multiple_Launch_Rocket_System) and M142 HIMARS (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M142_HIMARS).[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_Launched_Small_Diameter_Bomb#cite_note-bmrc-9)[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_Launched_Small_Diameter_Bomb#cite_note-Selinger_2022-10) It can also be fired from its own launch container, allowing it to be fired from sea.[11] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_Launched_Small_Diameter_Bomb#cite_note-saabg-11)"

From New Scientist today
A European satellite that monitors sea ice thickness and soil moisture is frequently being blinded over Europe and the Russian Arctic due to heavy interference since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The interference is in a microwave frequency that almost all countries, including Russia, have agreed to keep clear.

“Since the Russia-Ukrainian war, we have been heavily affected and we lose significant amounts of data over Europe,” Klaus Scipal (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=xfrJwgMAAAAJ&hl=en) at the European Space Agency told New Scientist.

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite (https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/missions/smos), launched in 2009, works by detecting faint microwave emissions from Earth’s surface. It exploits the fact that, for instance, wet soil emits more microwaves than dry soil.

Because ice emits more microwaves than liquid water, SMOS can also detect sea ice and how thick it is up to around a metre, but can’t tell if the ice is thicker than this. It also works only in winter when there is no thawing, says Lars Kaleschke (https://www.awi.de/en/about-us/service/expert-database/translate-to-english-lars-kaleschke.html) at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremen, Germany, who works on the sea ice data.

SMOS detects microwaves with a frequency between 1400 and 1427 megahertz – this includes the 1420 MHz frequency at which hydrogen gas emits, which is important to astronomers (https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21028091-200-missing-matter-where-did-half-the-universe-go/). This band is protected by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

“The decision to protect the band is agreed to by all ITU member states,” says a spokesperson for the ITU.

That means these nations shouldn’t use this frequency, and that all devices should be designed to ensure they do not accidentally produce signals at this frequency. Russia is a member of the ITU.

However, there has always been some low-level interference from devices such as wireless security cameras and radios that emit at these frequencies, either because their designers were unaware of the regulations or failed to ensure there were no unintentional emissions in this range.

“As these are illegal devices, we have the means to remove them and we closely work with national authorities to do so,” says Scipal. “It is a tedious work, but we manage to keep the numbers and their impact low.”

Interference from military radars and jammers is a different matter that, in practice, nothing can be done about, he says. “We clearly see those sources in regions of geopolitical tension.”

The interference isn’t continuous, so on some orbits the satellite is still able to get useful measurements from the region, says Kaleschke. “The data quality is reduced, but we are not totally blind,” he says.

NASA’s SMAP satellite (https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn20111-satellites-could-keep-an-eye-out-for-floods/), which has a radar in addition to detecting natural microwaves, is also helping fill in some of the gaps, says Kaleschke. The SMOS and SMAP data were already being combined, he says, as SMAP’s radar can measure sea ice thickness of more than a metre, while SMOS is more accurate for thin ice.

One explanation for the interference could be Russian attempts to jam the signal that GPS-guided munitions used by Ukraine rely on, says freelance radar engineer Christian Wolff (https://www.radartutorial.eu/html/author.en.html). These operate at the frequencies of 1164 to 1215 MHz, 1215 to 1300 MHz and 1559 to 1610 MHz.

“These frequencies are actively jammed by the Russians,” he says. “It is quite possible that these jammers simply interfere in the entire range between 1200 and 1600 MHz.”

Some older radars can operate in the 1400 to 1427 frequency range, says Wolff, but he thinks it is unlikely these are being used in the war. That said, Russia’s extraordinarily high losses of equipment in Ukraine have forced it to pull older equipment out of storage (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/03/23/russia-t54-t55-old-tanks/)

A good read on the state of play of ATACMS, and the likes of Storm Shadow.

In October, Ukraine revealed it had quietly received, and then successfully used, the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) long-range weapon against Russia. In this new op-ed, John Hardie and Bradley Bowman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies argue that the US needs to send significantly more of the weapons — and not just the older variants that Ukraine has received so far.

Two weeks after Ukraine first employed the US-provided Army Tactical Missile System against Russian forces, top GOP lawmakers sent a letter (https://www.reuters.com/world/senior-us-republicans-urge-long-range-missiles-ukraine-2023-11-02/) to President Joe Biden arguing that “the job on ATACMS is only half-done.”

They’re right. Without more ATACMS deliveries, Ukraine will likely soon run out. And just as importantly, Kyiv would benefit from other ATACMS variants beyond the version already provided.
ATACMS is a ground-launched ballistic missile system operated by the US Army and several allied and partner militaries. It offers a highly survivable, all-weather long-range precision-strike capability that can respond to time-sensitive targets faster than a cruise missile.Obtaining ATACMS had been a top priority for Kyiv for more than a year. But only after bipartisan congressional pressure (https://www.fdd.org/analysis/2023/06/12/bipartisan-coalition-urges-biden-to-send-atacms-to-ukraine/) and growing concerns regarding the war did the Biden administration finally agree (https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2023/09/ukraine-might-finally-get-atacms-heres-what-that-means.php) in September to send ATACMS to Ukraine.
While that belated decision has helped Ukraine on the battlefield, the administration did not send the newest or most advanced version of ATACMS. Instead, Ukraine received (https://twitter.com/UAWeapons/status/1714286709654143332) the M39 Block I, the oldest ATACMS variant (https://asc.army.mil/web/portfolio-item/atacms/). It has a maximum range of 165 kilometers and carries a warhead that disperses 950 anti-personnel/anti-materiel (APAM) bomblets. By contrast, modern versions of ATACMS have a 300-kilometer range and carry unitary warheads. The Pentagon reportedly (https://www.politico.com/news/2023/10/17/biden-decision-send-longer-range-missiles-to-ukraine-00121969) agreed to donate the M39 because it’s not written into US war plans, as its warhead is inconsistent with US policy (https://dod.defense.gov/Portals/1/Documents/pubs/DOD-POLICY-ON-CLUSTER-MUNITIONS-OSD071415-17.pdf) discouraging the use of cluster munitions.

Ukraine quickly put the missiles to good use. In mid-October, Kyiv’s forces struck (https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2023/10/ukraine-now-has-atacms-but-will-soon-need-more.php) the Berdyansk and Luhansk airfields, located in eastern and southern Ukraine, respectively. In addition to destroying or damaging (https://twitter.com/JohnH105/status/1714236403712692303) numerous Russian helicopters, the strikes will likely force (https://twitter.com/bradyafr/status/1718787300300091866) Russian Army Aviation to operate from more distant bases, reducing its effectiveness.Heidi Grant, President, Business Development, Defense, Space & Security Global Services at Boeing, shares an industry perspective to this year’s theme of moving into the future with transformational insights.

From Heidi Grant - Boeing (https://bit.ly/3Qw0iOB)
Of course, ATACMS might’ve had a greater impact if Biden had sent them earlier. After Kyiv launched its counteroffensive in early June, Russian Ka-52 attack helicopters operating from Berdyansk helped (https://twitter.com/JohnH105/status/1667278666756177920) thwart Ukrainian advances. But late is better than never.

As the lawmakers note in their Nov. 1 letter, however, “the United States has only provided a smaller number” of ATACMS to Ukraine. Western officials told The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/17/world/europe/ukraine-atacms-attacks-russia.html) that the initial delivery consisted of just 20 or so missiles, while the Associated Press (https://apnews.com/article/atacms-ukraine-longrange-missiles-5fd95f32449d14da22b82d57d6ccab22) reported that Kyiv had received fewer than a dozen as of mid-October. Ukraine likely expended (https://twitter.com/JohnH105/status/1714350815379431495) most of those missiles (https://twitter.com/JohnH105/status/1714377282050003316) during its initial salvos (https://twitter.com/JohnH105/status/1714709222712095061). Absent additional supplies, Ukraine will soon run out — if it has not already.

In their letter, the lawmakers called on Biden to send Kyiv the rest of America’s ATACMS missiles with APAM warheads. This would include both the M39 as well as the M39A1 Block IA. The latter also carries a cluster warhead but has a 300-kilometer range, allowing Ukraine to hold at risk targets in all of Crimea. If the Pentagon doesn’t need the M39 due to its cluster warhead, then the same presumably applies to the M39A1. The US Army reportedly (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/09/22/atacms-ukraine-cluster-munitions/) had nearly 1,500 ATACMS missiles as of late August, including over 360 with APAM warheads.

In addition to the APAM variants, the lawmakers also urged Biden to give Ukraine some ATACMS missiles with unitary warheads. Whereas the APAM variant is effective against soft-skinned targets such as aircraft and air defense systems, its warhead is ineffective against targets such as bridges (https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2023/08/kyiv-strikes-bridges-supporting-russian-forces-in-southern-ukraine.php) and hardened command posts. Destroying those targets requires a powerful unitary warhead like those found on modern ATACMS variants. Europe is too important, and Russia too great a threat in the Far East, to put Ukraine on the backburner in favor of Taiwan, argues AEI Asia expert Michael Mazza.

RELATED: Armed with Storm Shadow, Ukraine could ‘starve’ Russian front lines of logistics, leadership (https://breakingdefense.com/2023/05/armed-with-storm-shadow-ukraine-could-starve-russian-front-lines-of-logistics-leadership/)

Ukraine does have other long-range missiles with unitary warheads, most notably its Storm Shadow (https://www.fdd.org/analysis/2023/05/12/uk-sends-long-range-missiles-to-ukraine-even-though-u-s-refused/) and SCALP-EG (https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2023/07/france-sends-scalp-eg-missiles-to-ukraine.php) air-launched cruise missiles (ALCMs), provided by the United Kingdom and France, respectively. But Kyiv likely has few (https://twitter.com/FRHoffmann1/status/1688579209004761088) of those missiles left, and London and Paris cannot (https://www.wsj.com/world/u-s-urges-allies-to-help-ukraine-endure-another-winter-of-war-7226655b) soon provide many more.

Also, because those missiles have a maximum range of just 250 kilometers, Ukrainian pilots would have to put themselves at great risk to strike targets deep in Crimea. This includes the Crimean Bridge (https://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2023/07/crimean-bridge-damaged-by-ukrainian-strike.php), which Russia uses to transport equipment and supplies to southern Ukraine. Disabling that bridge could facilitate Ukrainian gains during a renewed offensive in the spring. While Germany’s Taurus ALCM (https://www.euronews.com/2023/09/26/washington-is-finally-sending-ukraine-long-range-missiles-now-its-berlins-turn) would probably offer the best solution thanks to its over 500-kilometer range and sophisticated fuze (https://twitter.com/FRHoffmann1/status/1690731787465506816), Berlin has refused (https://www.politico.eu/article/why-germany-scholz-rattled-sending-taurus-missile-ukraine/) to provide it.

Pentagon officials (https://www.fdd.org/podcasts/2023/09/29/ukraine-in-the-balance/) have argued (https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/bidens-latest-weak-excuse-for-not-sending-atacms-to-ukraine) that the United States doesn’t have enough unitary ATACMS to spare (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/07/22/ukraine-us-long-range-missiles/). These missiles are certainly a high-demand asset. But the US military plans to soon (https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-23-106059.pdf) begin fielding a more capable replacement, the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), within the next two years. Indeed, deliveries of PrSM Increment 1 could (https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/one-argument-against-giving-atacms-to-ukraine-is-about-to-erode) begin as early as 2024. As the US Army’s top procurement official said (https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/one-argument-against-giving-atacms-to-ukraine-is-about-to-erode) in September, the PrSM’s imminent arrival could “make it less risky from a readiness standpoint to provide some number” of ATACMS to Ukraine.

RELATED: Army taps teams to build new Precision Strike Missile for targets beyond 1,000 km (https://breakingdefense.com/2023/03/army-taps-teams-to-build-new-precision-strike-missile-for-targets-beyond-1000-km/)

Moreover, ATACMS remains in full-rate production at Lockheed Martin. The company makes “about 500 per year,” a spokesman told (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2023/07/22/ukraine-us-long-range-missiles/) The Washington Post in July. Currently, 209 missiles are planned for sales to foreign countries in fiscal year 2024. Washington could ask one or more of those countries to delay receipt so the missiles can either go directly to Ukraine or backfill US donations. Better yet, Congress could appropriate funding this year to procure more ATACMS for Ukraine.

ATACMS has proven to be a useful addition to Ukraine’s arsenal of long-range precision-strike capabilities. But it’s too soon for Washington to pat itself on the back.

The Biden administration should deliver the Pentagon’s remaining APAM missiles to Ukraine without delay and send as many ATACMS with unitary warheads as possible without jeopardizing US military readiness; that would likely include at least several dozen. For their part, Republicans in Congress should support quickly passing (https://www.defensenews.com/opinion/2023/10/06/congressional-inaction-damages-both-ukrainian-and-us-militaries/) a supplemental Ukraine aid bill.

Ukrainians are determined to defend their homes against Russia’s unprovoked invasion. But success on the battlefield requires more than determination. It also requires the right weapons. That’s why Washington should provide Kyiv with additional ATACMS without delay.

Their problem it would seem is that along side Putins goal to bring Russia into the 20th century and to move Russia away from the West to become a modern isolated powerhouse with domination aims.

He appears to have forgotten one slight flaw in his cunning plan, and that was the only way he could modernise Russia was to buy in most of the infrastructure and equipment and modernisation from the West making the Country in effect totally reliant on the supply of modern parts and equipment.

As such they now struggle to keep the whole system running as spares run out and no replacements are become available, and it will only get worse. In some ways I can see the car industry becoming like Cuba once was, ageing foreign vehicles kept on the road while technology passes them by.

Neither side dares to overfly the front-lines, and the A10 certainly does not have any special properties that allow it to disregard AA missile defences. I wouldn't say the situations are comparable. Attacking hundreds of dispersed tanks advancing at speed over open no-man's land with some accompanying mobile AA, is very different from crossing over static, fortified positions that have been carefully developed and constructed over many months. What, in your view, would they be attacking there ?

Yes...and ...? I see no similarity between that and the A10's CAS role: do you ? Additionally, addressing your specific Su-25 point, I have no idea how effective these rocket lobs are. The "aiming" is rudimentary ( especially when "lobbing" ) so I have no idea what kind of targets they are hoping to hit

The head of Ukrobanderostan has said that Russia is getting ready to launch an operation called “Maidan 3” in Kiev, aimed at overthrowing him.
Hell… Upset the cart. Exposed the plan.

Will have to adjust the groundwork now.
P.S. Remarkably, the very name of Russians’ cunning scheme, “Maidan 3”, shows that Kiev has admitted that the first two maidans were nothing but coups.

So you take a dump next to a knocked out APC and get killed by a drone, chances are he probably got the contents of his bowels back as well.

The choreography is more allegro but your post # 6730 also has musical accompaniment. Where do you see a difference ?

If I were a Ukrainian - given what the Russian bastard hordes have inflicted on both civiklian and military Ukraians - then every dead Russki would be worth a celebratory dance/lyric ( if I had the time and energy )

Will be occasionally posting some exclusive stuff I get from soldiers. This is from Novomikhaylivka, Donetsk Oblast.

Comment: "More and more Russians are using portable EW. They've installed the EW on their own destroyed vehicles. On the MT-LB, they installed it during the assault".

Unfortunately, China will keep Russia afloat. China may not have all the expertise and technologies Russia used to receive from the West but she is certainly not only a manufacturing power house. Semi cons, mobile phones, consumer goods, cars etc. China got most of it. Trade between Russia and China skyrocketed since the beginning of the war. I am pretty sure that China sees this as an opportunity.

While I don't particularly disagree with your sentiment - the Apache is a very complicated aircraft to fly and maintain. It reportedly takes two years for a helo qualified pilot to transition to an Apache, and the maintenance requirements are similarly complex.

UK Conversion To Type(how to fly it) course is 26 weeks followed by 26 weeks Conversion To Role(how to fight it).

https://kyivindependent.com/russian-parliament-passes-budget-raising-military-expenditures-to-1-3rd-of-all-expenses-for-2024/

Russian parliament passes budget with record military expenditures

The Russian parliament passed a budget for 2024 that increases military spending to more than one-third of total government expenditures, Russian independent media outlet Meduza reported (https://meduza.io/feature/2023/11/23/gosduma-prinyala-byudzhet-s-rekordnymi-voennymi-rashodami-kak-obychno-bez-osobyh-diskussiy)on Nov. 23.

If combined with funding for domestic law enforcement agencies, the figure rises to 40%.

According to Meduza, state expenditures on Russia's military sector will exceed social payments for the first time.

The budget has passed through all but one of the necessary steps in order to become a law, with only the signature of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin remaining to bring the budget into force.

The budget had gone through 900 amendments since its first draft, Meduza wrote, with an additional 725 billion rubles ($8.2 billion) being allocated to the country's military sector in the second draft.

In addition, Russia has earmarked a significant amount of money, at least $2.6 billion, to be spent on the territories of Ukraine that it illegally annexed in September 2022.

In order to fund the increased military expenditures, Russia will need increased revenue. Funding the first draft of the budget, which was smaller than the final version passed, would reportedly require a 22% increase in government revenue from 2023.

The Russian government is considering raising taxes to account for the discrepancy, sources told Meduza.

Unusual activity on "X" at the moment.

It seems to go through propoganda cycles. For the past month it's been almost 100% successful Ukranian strikes, but only in the last few days, Russian strikes are starting to appear. Any reason for the change I wonder?
