summit

It transpires that it is too close to the runway! I think they are going to put the car park at the rea of the building which should get around the problem?

Then reason for the stoppage is due to the highway at the front moving to the rear of the building, allegedly this was overlooked at some point and all the sevrices, routes in and out of the building and such like are going to have to be changed. The other question is why is the road moving to the rear of the building, does this have anything to do with the China gateway project??

My information is that the new (i.e. masterplan's) taxiway will be where the road is currently.

The water story is hogwash; the building is exactly where the planning permission said it should be. How that squares with the taxiway I don't know.

I think the road move will allow the Alpha taxiway more clearence to move South but i dont think it could go were the road is, unless they knock the summit building down and they wont be doing that. Nice looking building i must say.

Ambition

Thanks for the link, Catflaps.

Ambition is no bad thing, suffice to say that Manston has already pretty well matched Prestwick as far as freight is concerned, now all it needs is a few more passengers.

I note that the KIA website is advertising two more sits vac, one security and one assistant ATC.

Could the ATC assistant and security being recruited be the result of the "rumoured" night flights and a requirement for a security and ATC during dark hours

Vacancies

Hangar 9
No point in speculating. I have no doubt that all will become clear in due course. For all we know, they may be replacements for people that have retired, moved on or won the lottery.

China Gateway Project

I understand that it's to do with bringing Chinese buisness to Kent. I think it's more to do with the industrial park rather than the airport. I too would like to know more, though.

China Gateway

A recent report from a Kent news site, Google it for more info:
Thanet’s business community is hoping China is on the verge of coming to Kent. Key decisions are expected soon which could put the China Gateway project – promising 3,000 new local jobs – on schedule to open next year. In the pipeline is the planning application to Thanet District Council for the first phase of the project at Manston Business Park – and a decision will be thrashed out in the near future. In fact, David Foley, chief executive of Thanet and East Chamber, said: “Following a visit to the Commercial Group Properties (CGP) office at Manston last week, I have been briefed to let members (of the chamber) know that planning permission for the first phase of development of the China Gateway is expected very shortly.” But Rob Prince, operations manager of CGP, stressed that its application was currently the subject of the full planning process and that the outcome would not be known for some time. He added that the company continues to hold consultation meetings with residents to ensure their opinions are taken into consideration. Half of the business park is owned by a TDC-Kent County Council joint venture, and the other half by CGP. Delegations have visited China and seen a number of big firms keen to come to Kent. Chinamex, the Chinese government’s official arm for globalising the massive country’s industry, already has initial provisional agreements to come to Kent, as part of a drive to bring a number of large Chinese firms to Manston. Meantime, Mr Foley said: “It promises an eventual 1,000 jobs on site and double that number among local suppliers or products and services. The key word here is ‘local’. “The first phase of the project has been carefully planned by local people in a local partnership of stakeholders from the public and private sectors – all of them with a long-standing commitment to Thanet. “Companies will no longer be obliged to send their representatives to Beijing or Shanghai to view Chinese goods – Manston will provide a showcase to attract buyers to a range of hi-tech products. “The influx of visitors from Europe and mainland Britain should provide a boost to local traders unrivalled since the heyday of seaside holidays.” He said every sector from taxis to employment agencies, hotels and related services, retailers and providers of professional services will benefit. He echoed recent political statements that this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity. However, Mr Foley said he recognises some residents and nature groups do have anxieties about the project – and he stressed the chamber “will be the first to shout if environmental concerns are ignored or overridden.” He added: “If Thanet is to retain its status as the fastest growing area of Kent, it is projects such as the China Gateway that will help stem the outflow of young people and provide worthwhile, sustainable employment in the future.”

DFZ,
I would think that alpha taxiway would move slightly north, it is already close to the runway and any move south wouldnt be possible. there has long been plans to move the roads in and around the airport, primarily to close off the road cutting across the airfield, but since they have put up permanant fencing along the road now (cutting off echo taxiway from tha wasp) this would seem pointless. perhaps it is just a way to facilitate alpha move north, but then how would that fit in with the electrical buildings, close to the end of alpha and the road ? still, gives us something to write about. eh.

Sorry Kelly you old smunt, slip of the tongue, i ment North.

As for the electrical buildings they are west of the runway end and the other substations have already been moved to the North recently to allow for the Alpha move. If the gateway project does happen it must bring some flights to Manston even if they are only visitors.

Also heard from a source at the airport there is supposed to be some sort of announcment in June, lets hope its pax back

The woman who will fight for the Thanet South seat at the next general election says the Government’s new aviation tax policy could cripple Kent International Airport at Manston.

Conservative parliamentary candidate Laura Sandys said: "The new aviation tax policy will threaten its future, with freight flights that represent 80 per cent of their current business moving to across the Channel.

"This tax will hit Manston at a crucial moment in its development and could threaten the airport’s future.”

She hopes the man she wants to unseat, Labour’s Steve Ladyman, will lobby the Treasury to change the tax plan to “save the airport”.

Ms Sandys added: “We have been in dialogue with Infratil, KIA's operator and they are concerned the tax will push their customers across the Channel in a highly competitive market.

"Freight is already being flown into European airports and brought across by ferry due to the security measures that have been imposed on freight in this country – this further burden on our developing airport could be disastrous."

“I have discussed the issue with George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, and have briefed Julian Brazier MP, the Canterbury MP and Shadow Minister for Aviation.

"We are all committed to supporting the airport.”

Thanet North MP Roger Gale added: "We regard this as having very serious implications for the future development of the airport.

"At the very time when we are seeking to promote the commercial viability of the airport and to move some aviation away from central London, the last thing we need is an additional cost burden upon those using regional airports."

International Civil Aircraft Register 1976 from Civil ATC Manston

Hi Folks, slightly off topic and probably in the wrong thread but just cleared out the attic and found two rather large and heavy books titled 'International Register of Civil Aircraft 1976 - Bureau Veritas, Civil Aviation Authority. The covers are in an ok-ish condition and the insides are virtually un-touched. Inside in inscribed in pencil 'CAA Kent Radar' Return to Office Civil ATC Manston Kent on expiry'

Why they're in Cornwall I don't know..... I presume no-one at Manston wants them back, or do they? Any ideas? PM me

Books detail all new registrations around the world and cancellations for each country - facinating read! Feel free to drive for 5 hours to collect.

Surprise!

No need for surprise, this a Manston thread not an MK thread. There are at least two pprune threads dealing with the subject of MK, no need to spill over on to this one surely!
