This thread really is going round in circles. I was at a presentation by Manston's CEO recently. These are the facts:
They're spending a lot of money on modernising the place
Trade is building up steadily
They're ahead of forecast on freight, below on passenger
It's a long-term investment
Let's just leave them to get on with it, eh?

From an Infratil Investor Presentation, available on their website
Key Opportunities
Freight growth –new higher levels each year
Schedules remaining solid –working with customers to soften seasonal downturn
Border Inspection Post being marketed
Passenger prospects are robust –but rely on aircraft availability and strategic fit
Determined not to sell capacity too cheaply
Regional services to Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Amsterdam feasible
Niche charters will continue to grow
Large advantages for low cost airlines
Long haul low cost an exciting opportunity

From PIK Web-site
Quote on PIK web-site re a new Bureau de Change
A provisional deal was also agreed with another of Infratil’s airports, Kent International Airport, where The Change Group will start operating when the number of international passengers using the airport passes the 500,000 mark.
Any thoughts?

from my days under the deal that TK offered them they were paying about 4000 quid per rotation for a full 742 down as low as 2700 depending on landing weight, and about 1800-2500 for a Diccy 8 that included everything... needless to say - we lost ooooodles of cash....

Demand for summer flights from Kent International Airport has resulted in some routes, including Croatia on the Adriatic coast, selling out completely. The airport’s holiday providers - Newmarket Holidays, Kent Escapes and newcomers CI Travel Service Ltd - have all experienced strong take off in sales, a spokesman said.
Proving particularly popular have been 2008’s new routes to Croatia, Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, and Jersey. This is the first year Newmarket Holidays has offered trips to Croatia from the airport and Alison Keeble, its regional charter director, said: ‘We were testing the water when we launched the route but it has sold out extremely quickly. We will definitely be offering more flights to Croatia next year.’
Madeira has also sold out and established Italian destinations such as Tuscany and Lake Garda are in demand. Las Palmas and Palma in Majorca are also popular. Peter Drew, managing director of CI Travel Service Ltd, added: ‘We’re delighted that the Jersey route has proven to be so popular. Sales have so far exceeded all our expectations.’

News today, The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has allowed airports operator BAA to lift its fees to pay for better facilities and more stringent security measures. And to pay for terminal 5.Charges are rising by 23.5% at Heathrow in the year 2008/2009, and increase by 21% at Gatwick.
I also understand that BAA are looking at lifting it's fee above this.
You can understand why some Cargo is pulling out.
This makes manston a better option for cargo and charters.

The Hangar
Continental Aviation Services Ltd are awaiting an audit by the CAA to approve the company as a '145' organization. Once it is in place, work on aircraft can commence.
An "African" CAA audit took place this week also to approve the company for them and also to inspect the aircraft to be re-registered in their country when it goes into service

Kent International handled 3,966 tonnes of freight in February, up 64% on February 2007.
All scheduled carriers improved their prior year and year-to-date freight volumes during February.
The airport’s total year-to-date freight volume, at 29,022 tonnes, is currently 24% ahead of the equivalent period for the prior year.

Freight
It is interesting to note that Manston 2007 freight figures of 28,371 tonnes (from CAA statistics) represents almost exactly 50% of Infratil Airports Europe freight tonnage for the period. The Infratil website quotes for 2007, a total of 56,455 tonnes for the european airports.

What's even better is that the last three months have seen freight running at ca. 4,000 tonnes (allowing for diversions). Infratil is seeking to "smooth" the summer downturn, and my information is that some progress is being made. MK/BG is starting to uplift more, and BG's US approval must lead to more business for the airport.
The show-biz flights look set to continue, and there is a programme of horse flights arranged.
I believe we're looking at 40-50,000 tonnes p.a.

Sadly, the "bit of good news" about Manston is mostly without substance.
Passengers-
Despite the issuing of an up-beat press release, Kent Escapes were seriously considering whether to use Manston at all this year, and have cut service by 65% on last year due to lack of interest.
Newmarket are operating 10 return charter flights to different places, and have managed to fill the Croatia trip. Nice, but not significant.
Jersey sales are decribed as "exceeding expectations" - a wooly phrase which commits the author to nothing, and has often been used to describe poor performance at MSE in the past. Some years ago there was a Jersey service which had to be discontinued.
Cargo-
We are told MK are due to quit Manston, and that they have applied to use other UK airports. We do not know if they will choose to return. In any event this may not matter as the common belief is that they are paying low fees for the facility.
Other cargo operators operate at a skeleton level and are not significant.
Infratil have never acheived the annual tonnage peak realised by Planestation.
Manston remains a third division operator in this field.
I have also heard the rumour that the Infratil board have started taking a closer look at how much money MSE is losing. Their website predicted a profit as early as August this year, and there is no chance of this materialising.
Up-beat comments from enthusiastic amateur locals are fine, but professionals should think carefully before viewing MSE as a long term concern.
