CO medical diversion

The Continental flight to Newark yesterday had to divert to Iceland dur yo a medical emergency. Full story:

Ill passenger forces Belfast jet to divert - Local & National, News - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Interesting about the two passengers that subsequently had to be removed from the aircraft. Not that its particularly relevant, but I wonder if these were British or American passengers, or from elsewhere???

Belfast to Graz

Perhaps this should be on the Aer Lingus thread? This morning there was a flight to Graz (austria I think), it left at 0610 and was back in Belfast at 1155. It was a charter, flight number EI49XX .

Does anyone know if this was a 1 off, or will it be a regular, or what it was for?

Graz flight brought home the defeated Northern Ireland team from neighbouring Maribor in Slovenia. Don't know why they didn't just fly from Maribor itself.

Thanks Danmadole

That is interesting, Jet2 did a flight from Maribor last night. So what was cancelled in place of the Graz flight? An early morning LHR?

Ryanair did launch services from Maribor last year, but I dont think they have been the runaway success that they had hoped for.

LHR/Belfast September 2008

BD Down 21% on Sept 2007
EI carried 24733 down to 37% of the LHR market, compared with over 40% market share in August.

FR slightly above EZY in numbers carried to STN.

Jet2 not operating to AGP or TFS for summer 09.Led to believe that there were too many operators on AGP route, namely EI and Easyjet.Shame as the 757 had usually over 200 down to AGP.

I understand there is to be a Ryanair press conference today at BHD ?
Anyone know what they are announcing ?

Found this on the Ryanair website:

16.10.08 BELFAST CITY TRAFFIC BOOMS THANKS TO RYANAIR

WHILE BELFAST ALDERGROVE STAGNATES WITH AER LINGUS

Ryanair, the UK’s favourite airline today (16th Oct) in Belfast released official UK CAA traffic statistics for the period January to July 2008, which shows Belfast City traffic growing by 28% (the fastest growing airport in the UK) thanks entirely to Ryanair’s new and very successful base there, whilst traffic at the competing Belfast Aldergrove stagnated (growing by less than 2%) as it suffered under the dead hand of Aer Lingus’s high fare services.

To celebrate the success of the Ryanair Belfast City partnership, Ryanair is releasing 1 million €10 (all inclusive) seats for travel in November, December and January, and these seats can be booked at Ryanair.com - Book your cheap flight, hotels, car rental with ryanair.com from Thursday 16th to Sunday 19th October.

Speaking today at Belfast, Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary said:

“These figures confirm that Aer Lingus’s high fare, frequently delayed operations at Belfast Aldergrove have been a dismal failure, because the people of Belfast and Northern Ireland prefer Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares, no fuel surcharges, and more on-time flights from Belfast City. Some of Aer Lingus’s load factors at Aldergrove are truly awful, running less than 50% to important European capitals like Paris and Amsterdam, whereas Ryanair’s load factor on its four destinations (London, Liverpool, Glasgow and East Midlands) from Belfast City are running at over 75% full.

“Ryanair is continuing to work closely with Belfast City Airport to ensure that the runway extension is completed on schedule in the second half of 2009. We hope this will allow Ryanair to expand further at Belfast City by adding a range of guaranteed lowest fare flights to European destinations, which will see Aer Lingus’s traffic at Aldergrove not just stagnate, but collapse, when even the small number of European passengers they presently have at Belfast Aldergrove switch to Ryanair’s lowest fare, more on-time flights from the much more convenient Belfast City.

Today’s release of 1 million €10 (all inclusive) seat sale fares for travel in November, December and January will continue to encourage passengers to switch from high fare airlines like Aer Lingus at Lough Neagh International to Ryanair, the lowest fare airline at Belfast City Airport”.

Is this guy for real, yes his flights are on time etc, but I don't think that folk have been forfeiting their break in Malaga, for a week in Nottingham or Ayr on the basis that FR fares are cheaper.

Belfast City traffic growing by 28% (the fastest growing airport in the UK) , whilst traffic at the competing Belfast Aldergrove stagnated (growing by less than 2%)

I wouldn't broadcast that statistic too loudly as it can be used by residents, to fuel the argument against any further development (the white paper states that most growth has to take place at BFS) So the DOE may on this basis delay indefinately any expansion.

“Ryanair is continuing to work closely with Belfast City Airport to ensure that the runway extension is completed on schedule in the second half of 2009

Again he is putting more pressure on BCA in their quest for a runway extension. This dogmatic view will only work against his plans.

If they are so successful where are they finding the EMPTY seats to sell at £1 .

He has a long way to go before he gets his extended tarmac......

The guy has no shame!

He'd need to catch on soon that the typical Ulster passenger doesn't appreciate being treated like cannon fodder...my personal experience is that EI are streets ahead of FR, with EZ also a much better bet...and when all the sums are done, FR fares are rarely as cheap as MOL suggests...

And to hint that BHD could become bigger than BFS due to his company...I think that's up there with his wisdom on fuel hedging!

Bit of "kettle calling the pot black" there then - EZY have been treating passengers like "cannon fodder" ever since they arrived in NI ten years ago!

Yeah, all LCCs are more or less the same. I flew from Belfast to Bristol last week and almos p$ssed myself laughing when I realised all the people who'd paid for speedy boarding only speedily boarded the bus that was waiting downstairs to take us across the apron to the 'plane. Does it say in EZY's small print that paying a fiver or whatever it is for speedy boarding doesn't necessarily mean you'll be on the 'plane first, but instead at places like Belfast, the bus? Cynical way to get money out of passengers in my mind.

At long last this is official

BBC NEWS | UK | Northern Ireland | Passenger move for city airport

Next the runway extension. Encouraging to see that the Planning Service no longer have the tendency to protect and shield BFS from competition from BHD.

Would that be the same way that the residents of Templepatrick, Crumlin (aledgedly the fastest growing town in GB) and Glenavy are sheilded from Aldergroves operations, which are 24 hours?

Rosemount, those residents are now (supposedly) shielded in the small hours by the worlds daftest STAR. I believe Peter Griffin wrote in after a session in the 'Drunken Clam'.

No matter what the STAR is they will still have aircraft passing over them for runway 25 at or about 1250 feet QFE . The "daft star" you refer to is the same star it ever was..RINGA BEL(for arrivals from L 10). I believe you refer to the CDA? Perhaps you might enlighten us with YOUR ideas?
