dont forgot FLYBE will put summer 08 on sale this month.

We know jersey is up to 4 times a week.
wouder if they didn't put this route on sale a few months ago due to them going to base aircraft here??
We will soon find out if it shows based times when they go on sale.

Hopefully they will add those french and german routes!!

FR base would be great heard they are busy talking to a few UK airports but it looks as though boh is in the lead?

Where did you get one a week to Pisa with Jet2? Its Sat and Sun so far, more freqs will be added later on, the reason it was only initially added once weekly was due to pax demanding wanting flights on sale.

Have Jet2 reduced winter flights to Las Palmas to one per week? I thought it was more when launched.

Pleased Pisa being increased and perhaps more to be added, its a good short break destination.

Yeah, the Monday Las Palmas has been dropped due to lack of interest.

Just operating on the Saturday now.

Bit of a shame as G-LSAA is only flying 4 times a week to the Canaries now.

However, she is available for charter work and is almost ETOPS compliant!

(Night stops away somewhere hot please!!)

LSAA- the old G-BNSF with Air Europe. Its almost 20 years old now, must be a bit of a shed, especially if its to be used on ETOPS unrefurbished.

Well she does play up now and then, yes. (No details incase it puts the punters off!!)

However, it's one of the nicest handling 75's in the fleet.

I just flew to TFS on it, could do with a bit of a refurb, but otherwise very good flights both ways.

The drop in traffic is inevitable, clearly saturation point has been reached, the region does not have a large enough catchment area to sustain these levels, the airport used to appeal to scottish pax, but now there is no real reason for them to travel down as EDI and GLA are well served, also take away the novelty factor of the likes of SXF and other city break destinations then traffic will drop, i think its for this reason Ryanair will not increase their ops out of NCL as supply outstrips demand.

NCL really needs to take stock and put in place infrastructure improvements that will allow for future exapnsion. Why would anyone want to add more capacity at an airport that was maxed out at the majority of peak times over S07? Additional aircraft means additional work at the peak and the current facilities just can not handle it.
NCL could be in for 2 or 3 years of holding current levels with small % movements both ways until there is some improvement iun the infrastructure to allow on-peak expansion.

Groundhand - have to agree with you 100% some improvements have to be made to the infrastructure.

BIGE - Have to disagree, to use your example SXF still got very good loads up to the point this was pulled and only were affected when EZY started messing around with the tinmetable. To also use Rynair as an example the last route that was pulled by them was Oslo and again this enjoyed good loads as indeed most Scandanivian routes from the NE do. I beleive that this was dropped as the w pattern aircraft that operated the route was no longer available.

Another example STN has very good loads but we no find ourselves at 2001 GO levels in respect of rotations. Lets have some more evidence please that routes have reached saturation from NCL.

EZY have become stagnate at NCL lets have some fresh ideas from perhaps Ryanair or FLYBE as your constant assumption that we have reached saturation does not make sense.

What infrastructure improvements do you think we are likely to see then?

What are we likely to see?
Probably not a lot over the next 2 - 3 years.

What would I like to see?
It's more a question of 'where are the choke points?; and what can be done to relieve them?'

1. Check-in. Provide incentives for someone to provide multi-airline self check-in facilities. Servisair have a product for charter and lo-co carriers. Others are available. Accept that higher and higher percentages of passengers will, whenever possible, use the internet to check themselves in and plan for it.
2. Separate out a dedicated 'bag drop' facility for internet check-in users and self check-in facilities. Keep this separate to 'standard' check-in, manned throughout the day. Swissport/Servisair common area, float between the number of desks open; minimum of 01 per agent throughout the day - HIGH penalties if found without one manned. Plan for this to become totally automatic - the DfT will concede this eventually.
3. Outbound baggage belt infrastrucure. This is a major choke point and needs some radical solutions. I'm not technical enough to know how to solve the problems but the present system just does not work.
4. The pier is probably the next biggest problem. I've voiced my view on a dedicated bussing facility before. With so many off-pier stands this is essential and could be provided and linked by a sky-walkway. it need to be somehwere where busses can come and go without, as much as possible, any interference from moving aircraft. The airport have invested in the Cobus fleet so now the ground facilty.
5. International arrivals and HMI. More space, more desks. HMI have got to better match their manning to passenger flows and not their antiquated roster pattern.
6. ...and get rid of the fing rotating doors in the arrival halls. Why is NCL the ONLY airport you can not get out of once you have cleared all controls!

Security now seems to have the space and number of machines - make sure the rostering is matched much more closely to the passenger flow rates. Not rocket science, you can, with a bit of work, get the flow rates off the DCS systems.

The longer term is where to build a terminal extension/new terminal and how this would link with additional airside gates. The current pier is probably 10 years past it's planned (extended) life and needs to be replaced - logistically this would be a nightmare without some other pier in place first.

..now, I MUST stop smoking that funny smelling stuff...

Anyone know when the new Fedex route to Paris starts, and what a/c will operate it? Also any info on when Flybe will go on sale?

Cheers

The Bag belt system needs a major sorting out they just couldn't cope in the summer with the amount of bags! HIM has recently added another desk and is now manned by 4 members of staff during the day.

Would it hurt the airport to put some heating on once in a while Gate 20 resembled the Artic this morning!

Speedbrakes AA cant be as bad as AC surely!

BIG E In total agreement with your observations. I note you used SXF as an example, unfortunately whatever destination you had put forward there's always someone to take a more pedantic and converse view. What is needed more than anything to assist NCL is strong growth in the regional ecconomy & at present it is possibly in real terms in reverse The airlines aren't stupid and are constantly gathering data from all regions. The point made of NCL's attracting pax from the north & into Scotland one is a very interesing and relevant one, as undoubtedly this source has historically attracted pax in significant no.'s. I would imagine that any decline from this area must be viewed with great concern.
What I totally disagree with is that NCL's facilities being 'maxed out?' has any relevance whatsoever to projected falls in pax no.'s, a point that has been suggested. Most if not all of the top 10 UK airports are for that matter 'maxed out' at times. I have in the past had much to say in frustration at times with the facilities at NCL, bussing as opposed to piers & air bridges etc.and accept that the £5m from the flotation could have been put to better use , but from what I have seen, other than possibly the luggage belt issue, the problems I note are predominantly people / staffing problems. Taking cost issues aside, then frustration is predominantly with queues, whether it be customs or security. There always appear to be plenty of desks, security machinery, it's just that they never seem to operate to capacity, and there are never 'enough' security & customs officers at the critical points of the hold ups. The terminal area airside albiet one great shopping centre in not in itself more unpleasant than any other in the UK, and infrequently at capacity and I can't see that it should cause any airline undue concern as to impact on their projected S08 operations.
It is too easy to blame facilities, I actually do not dispute any of Groundhands 6 points, all valid and in themselves all detracting from the current airport experience. However perhaps one should take a look at other regions, BRS has a very neat and at times stretched operation WITHOUT a pier and the obligatory holding lounges, I have no reason to believe that EMA or LPL have better facilities, BHX has but in terms of real growth has actually suffered from the competition of pile em in & sell it cheap.
NCL's position as one of the fastest growing in the UK was never going to last for any number of reasons and the slowdown that is now being projected was always inevitable.

Skyman,

Sensible words.
I would, however, take issue with BRS as the terminal facility is a nightmare to work for the ground handlers. I've been there, worked there and it is horrible, much more staff intensive than NCL.

I absolutely agree that some of the current problems at NCL are staff allocation and management issues; from the handling companies, HM employees and the airport.

My point about the current pier is that is is just so inefficient in terms of moving and managing passenger flow. By going the route of individual and/or mixed gate lounges (remember Tom S when he proposed it all) there are too many barriers, choke points and a total lack of good gate control facilities for the staff to manage. The designers (I won't call the architects!) ignored the prevailing wind and the average wind speeds and made something that would struggle in a perfect climate, never mind NCL on a November morning.

hey-ho, it's off to work I go...

Am I missing something the prevailing wind is Westerly, SW summer and NW winter?? Yes you get northerly days as today but whats that got to do with the price of bread??

Nothing wrong with the runway direction at NCL, it's usulally off no more than 20 - 30 degrees and when there are strong winds or gusts their pritty predictable and not too much of a handfull (often good fun too!!)

Try Leeds Bradford Airport for being bulit in the wrong place with the wrong runway direction (14 / 32)!
