Anyone like to hazard a guess how the airport will achieve 18m passengers?

I would think we are looking at a full length parallel taxiway with high speed turn offs.
A new 6 pack but who knows where and the expansion of the terminal towards the short term car park.

So am I now known as BuStEr? So where is the investment coming from?

It will be interesting to see the proposals, once published. The investment will have to come from the next owner of the franchise, either Abertis if they renew, or AN Other.

Looks like the council will be considering re-tendering the concession to run the airport.

I had my consultation letter through the door this morning. Do I need to join LADACAN?

Staff working for the concessionaire apparently have been told that these plans are not happening, so maybe a new concession partner has been lined up by LBC?

I think BuStEr International is a better prospect than Boris Island!

Time to assess LBC's options?

1. Do nothing.
With just 16 years left on the current concession, there's not enough time for any major works to generate a return on the investment. Abertis may tinker with this and that on the site, but the airport will basically stagnate.

2. Expand to 18 mppa within the existing boundary.
A longer concession would be needed, but the current one can't be extended without putting it out to tender. LBC would therefore have to break the current concession in 2014 and give the new operator a longer contract in order to provide a return on their investment. LBC is currently drawing up plans for that expansion - but will a new operator be happy to adopt them?

3. Expand later to 'full capacity' of the single runway (e.g. 35 mppa).
Most of the next concession would be needed to recoup the expenditure on the 18 mppa expansion, so growing the airport to 35 mppa would need a really long concession - and another tendering process. So the 18 mppa concession can't be offered over more than about 25 years - or it must contain another break clause at that point.

Would have thought that the plans to upgrade the road layout in the CTA and the dualling of the approach road through the tunnel in time for the Olympics will now not happen. What is the point in spending the money if the concession it taken away. Also not helped by the fact that the planning application got turned down.

2011 pax

Source: CAA

I don't think these have been posted

December 2011 640477 up 10.6% rolling year or 2011 9510137 up 8.9%

So a sluggish end to the year

Pretty good year then! I am not sure how December 2010 was affected by the weather but looking at EDI's 2011 December increases then quite a few domestics would have been cancelled in 2010 by the look it (GLA & ABZ as well).

Still 10.6% seems very good.

EDI ended 9384072 with December up 25% but Luton comfortably beat them.

Is 10.2 or 7.5% increase for 2012 reasonable, it seems quite high from the recent postings about the summer 2012 schedules?

Those 25% rises cannot be interpreted and are grossly over inflated, they compare Dec 2010 (with almost 3 weeks of days upon days of closures and cancellations) with virtually nothing similar the following year. The "true" figures are likely to be nearer to mid single digits.
