I hear that there are seven flights connected with the Passover tomorrow- 2 by Sun D´Or, 2 Jet 2 B757, 2 El Al one B767 and one B777 and one Israir A320; also another ´´big boy´´ on Tuesday with an Aer Europa A330 bringing in the Barcelona football team and supporters. Interesting times and a lot of extra passengers.

March 2010
Checking through this month's movements, it's been a pretty varied month. As far as I can see, no airline diversions in or out, but a total of 40 airlines operated to Luton one way or another during March.
Based aircraft belonging to EasyJet, Monarch, Ryanair, and Thomson.
Regular lights by Aer Arran, Air Atlantic, Blue Air, DHL, El Al, FlyBe, MNG, Sun D'or and Wizzair
Other visits by Air Europa, Air Finland, Astraeus, Atlantic AW (Faeroe Is), BA, Blue Line, Blue Panorama, BMI, Calima (Spain), Cimber, Condor, Danube Wings, Europe Airpost, Israir, Jet2, Jet Time, Livingston, Malev, Neos, Saudi Arabian, Skyservice, Smartlynx, Spanair, Titan, TUIfly Nordic and White Airways.
Government flights by the State of Kuwait and Royal Netherlands Air Force.
A few wide bodies in the mix, the Air Europa A330, El Al 777s, 767s from Blue Panorama, El Al, Thomsonfly and Titan, and A300s from DHL, Kuwait, MNG, Monarch and White.

Wizzair - Moscow?
Now that would be an interesting one, Buster - especially for UKBA! But surely, length of sectors will make that a difficult one without a based aircraft; there's no easy W-pattern there.
I'm not a lawyer so don't know the specifics, but would someone be able to posit a way as to how Wizz might gain traffic rights from Russia to anywhere besides Hungary ?
Not being in the EU, Wizz will only be able to pick up passengers in Moscow if the Kremlin says so - and signals from Russia so far seem to indicate that the Kremlin is not particularly keen on open skies at the moment. I seem to recall that after Lufty took over Austrian, Russia made a fuss about Austrian Airlines being essentially German owned rather than Austrian owned and thus the Moscow-Vienna route should be served by an airline whose equity ownership was of a more Austrian nature (along with any Russian carriers)

Wizz has three AOC's - Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine. Dependent on the billaterals between Russia and those three countries, Wizz maybe be able to launch flights from those three countries to Russia
With regards to flights from other countries to Russia, again it depends on the billaterals, but I sense they are unlikely to include permission for what would be classed as 7th freedom flights (between two countries where neither is the airline's home country) since the Russian's don't seem to grant such rights. For such rights to be granted the two countries being served would have to agree, and I think also the country where the airline is based would have to agree (or more likely agree to reciprocal rights)
Though as you can probably tell without studying or having knowledge of the relevant billaterals it's impossible to give a definite answer
Finally the other option is for Wizz to set up an AOC in the destination country they wish to serve. But that is clearly expensive

Did I actually say that Wizz would fly to Moscow from Luton? No, just potentially introduce flights to their route network. The UK could follow though.
Buster - point taken, although if something is posted about Wizz on the Luton thread, then there's a fairly strong inference that it's referring to Wizz's operations at Luton rather than just in/out of (for example) Budapest

No doubt Wizz would love to move into Russia. A huge untapped market.
My info indicates that possibly you will be able to fly to Moscow, but via a connection further East.
As for the bilateral agreements etc. I have no idea.
Were the last flights to Moscow, charters by Thomson using Britannia 737's back in the 1970's?
As an aside, when did work commence on building the Britannia 737 hangar (now painted orange)?

If my memory serves me correctly I think the Britannia-easyJet hangar commenced in 1969 and completed the following year. Before it was built it was a spectators area where you could just park the car and sit there without any hassle. I rember watching Britannia and Monarch Britannias on stands 1, 2 and 3 with passengers making an orderly walk to their aircraft - how times have changed.

I see that Google Maps have updated their satellite views of the airport to last summer. Also their street view now covers part of the airport but not inside the CTA

hangar 89
Further to the earlier answers, the area which is now stand 1/1R was used for the more interesting visiting airliner types, presumably those for which there was no towbar. I remember the Bulgarian IL-18's in the summer of 1969 parking there and getting progressively more obscured from view each week as hangar 89 rose skywards and reduced the photographic opportunities.
I have a note in my "spotting" log circa October 1970 that the hangar was in use, with an IAS Cargo Britannia inside.

I was trying to date this image for a local historian and eventually discovered it to have been taken on 22nd July 1968, anyway...enjoy.
