0523 cov man:

Ever heard of flogging a dead horse - well the horse is called Coventry and you're flogging the poor thing to death - the RSPCA will be round if you're not careful!!

Coventry's future is about as dead as the proverbial Norwegian Blue so far as commercial passenger ops are concerned so I must assume your comments are to be taken very much tongue in cheek.

Call 100 a cheap gibe at the expense of Coventry that has no basis in reality but does act as a distraction from the downward spiral being reported on this thread. A case of people in glass houses perhaps.

Turkish Arlines from BHX

Trip report I posted on another site but should be of interest to PPRuNe BHX fans.

Trip review BHX/IST/BHX in economy (could not justify paying Business for sub 4 hour flights)

Checked in on line and chose seats on each leg although only allowed to print boarding passes for inward leg. This did mean we could use Business /online desk for speedy check in.

As Priority Pass holders we used the Servisair lounge which excellent as the Emirates PAX had not yet arrived and we had it to ourselves, but we could have used the smaller 4deck AF/KLM lounge if the former had been busy.

Boarding was 40 mins late due to delayed inbound and we boarded the new(ish) 737/800 via the new, very smart, pier. All PAX lined up for full sniffer dog search-much interest shown in wife’s standby ham sandwich (never having flown TH before)

Decent legroom in economy (31 inch, but seemed more) with only 3 in the Business section outward and 6 on the return, economy seemed 80% full on both legs with mix of tourists, expats and transit to/from Northern Cyprus and Middle East.

Newspapers handed out with the day’s menu-and this is economy!

Cabin service was excellent with a full drinks service as soon as seatbelt sign was off, proper G&T and decent International wines with more offered with the meal.
Outward meal was a Salad with virgin olive oil dressing, choice of Grilled Chicken medallions or Cheese Tortellini followed by Plum cake and coffee.
Return was similar salad and then choice of poached Salmon or Chicken breast followed by Chocolate whip and coffee.
All washed down with a decent Yakut or a French Vdp.

Arrivals/Visa at IST was a bit of a scrum (3 big flights arriving) with PAX in wrong line not realising that it is Visa line first, then passports.
Took us 40 minutes to get through, and that was using the right queue but at least luggage was on the carousel.

Our return was also a bit of a scrum – what with the IMF Istanbul meeting and the terminal full of pilgrims returning from Mecca.
All luggage has to go through Security on entering the terminal, before check in but the THY desk was very efficient and we moved quickly to the Lounge and we chose PrimeClass over Advantage as the former was smaller and more comfortable.
The only cock-up was a change of gate after we had queued for 20 minutes at the original one (315) and a mad rush back to 214!

Then it all kicked off.
Adjacent to our gate security was the line for gate 215 which were pilgrims in transit from Mecca to Casablanca and who were having all their 2 litre containers of holy water confiscated and creating a tremendous fuss, so much so that the police arrived to quell the “riot” and our Security gate was suspended whilst this was all going on.
One had to be sympathetic with many of them - some of them village people whose first flight was to Mecca and had promised presents and water to their family and had been allowed to carry it onboard in Mecca with no warnings from the Airline that it should be in their hold luggage.
Eventually our line was allowed through to board but the row behind us intensified as each group moved forward to confront Security.

Not sure how it ended but I doubt their aircraft left on time.

Thirty minutes delay due to ATC restrictions because of IMF traffic but quick and smooth return flight and we managed to get to remote stand and into the terminal before the floodgates opened with the arrival of the midday EH flight from Dubai.
Big advantage of BHX, besides being near home, is that you seldom stack but what you gain you can lose because luggage is always slow- I have even waited 45 mins at T2 and we were the only aircraft in.
They had an excuse this time-the luggage door was jammed so a delay of 40 mins at a busy time was acceptable, but why remote stand/bus-was it because we were late?

Turkish Airlines-delighted with them and if their connection times to the Middle and Far East from BHX get better then I shall consider using them against EK for those routes, not just Istanbul.
Ps. A long weekend from BHX to Istanbul with full service flights from £188 is a must.

LHR Runway 3

What are the odds on about turn from a Conservative government when they are in power ? They are bound to be vocally 'against' LHR expansion at the moment. There are eight parliamentary seats up for grabs in the west London area. They are also after votes in the Midlands and the north. How are they going to fund High Speed Rail ?

They want to be in government. Once in power, they will have five years in which to go back on this promise. I would'nt get too excited !

Not a cheap jibe at all....Fact....I would have liked to see CVT make a success of itself........Thats where I live and was born and bred....However, it hasn't made a success of being a passenger airport of any significance. As I said, Runway and little else.
All airports are feeling the economic pinch BHX is no different. The difference is that when we ride out of the other side BHX will still be there because of or perhaps despite the future plans and the new infrastructure being built now.
It's not the runway that makes the money any more. I don't like that, but, I do recognise the fact. So if you have little else to offer/rip people off (Insert your own take), the income dries up.
It's a crap place to be but, Hey! that's where aviation is. The best thing that could happen IMO is that all the tiny airports disappear to take away a lot of the bargaining chips from airlines like FR. It won't happen, any more than the handling agents will wake up and realise the only people they are undercutting are themselves!!

Havana flights

It is to be hoped that the flights to Havana will also offer opportunities for people other than those seeking a cruise. Would think the opportunity of flight only to Havana would prove very, very popular. At last the prospect of flying to somewhere really interesting - direct from Brum!

Cruise flights

To add to the Acapulco and various other winter flights, I'm told there are a fair few of those planned this winter. Times might be hard but there seems to be plenty of demand for cruises by the look of it.

Thomson Airways

The Thomson long-haul schedule is quite a amazing and you can see
a time in the future that one aircraft will be pushed to complete the
schedule especially if Goa ever gets re-instated and heaven forbid a
winter Sanford.

It is disappointing to see the 738 based this winter but I suppose
it was inevitable with the reduction of the 757 fleet but at least
long-haul looks impressive for what will be a harsh winter at BHX.

September passenger figure

Per the CAA: -

September 2009 - 936935 down 4.5% (2008 984245 per BHX)

The individual route analysis is out as well.

Most of the business routes were down (BRU, CPH, CDG, DUS, FRA,
MUC (STR, AMS, MXP & ZRH) as you would probably expect.

Most of the above probably had a year on year cut in frequencies and the
decreases in some cases was smaller than in other months of 2009.

Ryanair loads held up fairly well, Continental was 9320 down
less than a couple of hundred but PHL added 5599 to the USA figures.

Turkish I believe averaged over 100 per flight again and although
the EK & PK figures didn't look great (end of Ramadan) they were
both up. Mahan Air was not bad either at 2685 or 111 per flight.

Winter cull still in progress

Monarch's turn this time with the Friday Malaga & Faro not operting
in late November, December, January after the New Year holiday until
the Feb half-term.

This leaves AGP at 4 a week and FAO 3 a week.

The biggest shock, which I mentioned on the Baby thread is the loss
of Edinburgh on a Wednesday for the winter and Thursday just sees
the evening GLA & EDI operating.

Is this a sign that they are aiming at the leisure market and have
given up the business market to flybe?

Although the trade traffic from the NEC is much reduced these
days, Wednesday is still a fair business traffic day during the
various trade shows.

However flybe will operate EDI six a day on a Wednesday and
seven on a Thursday so probably enough coverage and could
explain the increase in flybe fares on certain days on EDI.

Could we see an end to these flights or even handed over to
Regional to free-up 737's for the East Mids expansion?

Belfast stays double daily Sun-Wed and triple daily Thu/Fr!

BHX Press Release

Estuary Airport is for the Birds: Birmingham Airport - part of a solution to the `Heathrow Problem'
19 October 2009

Noting proposals for an airport in the Thames Estuary, there is a more
efficient, much less costly and practically instantaneous way to reduce the pressure on Heathrow. In layman's terms Birmingham could take another 9 million passengers tomorrow within the existing infrastructure. This could have an enormous beneficial effect on the local economy, and create jobs in a region that is becoming progressively needier.

The 2003 Aviation White Paper encouraged airports to provide for demand in their natural catchments. Birmingham is working towards this, though a significant proportion of Midlands business goes to Heathrow. Birmingham is the only airport with a significant Planning Consent (for a runway extension) already agreed.

Undoubtedly, part of the Solution to the `Heathrow problem' is a High-Speed Rail link so that people can 'Fly the Train'. Another element is called Birmingham. In less time than it takes some to walk from one side of Heathrow' to the other - 38 minutes - High-Speed Rail could get you to Birmingham Airport (this is less than the 45-60 minutes mooted for a link to the Estuary Airport).

Birmingham could take another 9 Million Passengers tomorrow (i.e. within
existing infrastructure), and the Master Plan to 2030 sees 18 million more
passengers using Birmingham. Theresa Villiers has already acknowledged that, together with a High Speed Rail link, Birmingham could perform this role (see note to Editors).

Even Kent (Ebbsfleet) would probably be less than an hour from Birmingham Airport, by High Speed Rail.

Birmingham is not seeking to transplant the Heathrow operation in its entirety, but South East traffic could form an element of Birmingham's wider portfolio. Around 50% of the UK population is less than a two-hour drive from Birmingham. High Speed Rail could bring them much nearer, with Central London only 40 minutes away, putting Birmingham in `Zone 4' of the Underground Map.

Birmingham has an excellent environmental record and one of the most stringent night flying regimes - there are binding agreements in place to protect the interests of local people. However within those binding agreements there is still tremendous opportunity. The Airport is running at less than 40% capacity. Making best use of the UK's Strategic Resources can only be in everyone's interests.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport's Chief Executive Officer, said: "Birmingham is ready to respond to any current or future government initiatives.
We already attract passengers from the home-counties who choose the convenience, choice and accessibility of Birmingham over other alternatives.

"We have plenty of capacity and, linked to high-speed rail, we are uniquely positioned to not only claw back people from our own region, who make the long journey to Heathrow, but to attract passengers from the overheated south east.

"We will not just be London's third runway as we have our own traffic - but by attracting those who waver towards Heathrow to use Birmingham instead, will create jobs and help to rebuild the local economy.

"Positioned at the heart of the country we are perfectly placed for those
visitors from abroad who want to experience all that the region, and further afield, has to offer. Birmingham's reputation continues to rise and is truly a destination which provides the perfect base for foreign visitors."

Routes where Monarch operate show high load factors and
long-haul was not too bad. The Philly route ended and I
would imagine the last few outbounds dragged the
average down. A big fingers crossed that it comes back.
