parking
Hi Guys, visit pprune at least once a day and the Birmingham thread is always my way in via my favourites. However this is one of my first posts.
Ref:
Drop off
Whilst acepting that it is a rip off their is always a pick up avaiable at the station if the pax jump on the rail link.
Centre cities
We are picking up our son on Monday lunchtime and the wife (being soppy) would like to be in arrivals to meet him rather than on the car park.
For short stay parking what would be our best option? Is there a short stay at the train station that gives a better deal or would we be better to just pay up on the airports short stay.
Thanks in advance

Stated on MAN forum that Nayzak are starting flights there in Dec with GSA allegedly already appointed - I don't think we will see them at BHX for a while if thats the case. I seem to remember another Libyan airline flirting with BHX in the past but can't remember their name

As did the moving of the bus stops well away from their very convenient location right in front of the terminal a few years ago......personally i'm surprised that skyrail re-opened after years of inertia, thank goodness for small mercies

Car Park Charges
Hi Runway 15
Charges for parking at the Rail Station went up on 28th Sept from £6 per day to £8 per day but I don't know of any short stay charges
At the Airport's drop and go parking you can rack up £5 every 15 minutes if you overstay the £1 for first 15 minutes
The airports short/medium stay multi storeys are £3.30 for the first hour and £6.40 for up to 2. Cost keep on rising the longer you stay.
Your problem arises if the plane you are greeting is late!
The airport is the cheepest option for an on time flight and the railway station the best bet for any risk of delays.
Alternatively drop the Mrs off, go lurk somewhere and reappear on request!

Car Parking
When did the £1 for the first hour in the long stay stop?
This was by far the best and most sensible policy but I
notice it is no longer on the bhx website.
I agree with GayFriendly that it is a great airport to fly
from but the current regime is desparately trying to
alter this by their petty cuts & charges.
With the current financial situation it is difficult to know if
this chipping away at services and adding charges is
necessary to protect airport jobs and fund future expansion
or just.............well work it out for yourself.
On another note (possibly part-related) I have noted about
30 schedule services have or will be ceasing this month
and a couple from last winter not restarting. That must be a
record of some sorts although over half were due to end and
the ones that usually carry on were from one airline.
This is without counting Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Bordeaux.
Amritsar (direct) and Toronto.

A few months ago ...it discretely moved from free 1 hour in Long stay to free 15 minutes. Not entirely sure what use a free 15 minutes is but you can still have it if you want it.

Parking
PhilBHX,
Phil thanks for your reply.
Picked our son up Monday pm but since we were a little early we "lurked" round by the train station.
I spoke to one of the "parking traffic enforcment officers" who was doing his rounds on the short stay and asked him if they were strict on the 20 minutes waiting time. He asked me why and what we wanted to do so I told him about the "soppy wife" meeting our son and he told us we could have 45 minutes as long as we parked right at the far end of short stay and walked back.
So a result was had, we were both there to meet our son and his girlfriend and thanks to the sensible guy at the train station we got free parking. Only took us 25 minutes to go over and meet them and get back so we would have got away with a £3.30 charge at the airport anyway but it greives me to be robbed for 25 minutes parking.
Perhaps those people in power should sit up and listen to what the general public and indeed lot of you guys on here who deal with us on a daily basis, are saying about the current pricing structure for what are the basics for people who need to use or visit the airport.
Thanks again for your help.

A little story going the rounds-enjoy.
Going the rounds on email at the moment, am sure the BHX boys will appreciate it.
"A guy is sitting in the bar in departures at a busy airport.
A woman walks in and sits down at the table next to him. He decides because she's got a uniform on, she's probably an off-duty flight attendant.
So he decides to have a go at picking her up by trying to identify the airline she flies for.
He leans across to her and says the Delta Airlines motto 'We love to fly and it shows'. The woman looks at him blankly.
He sits back and thinks up another line.
He leans forward again and delivers the Air France motto 'Winning the hearts of the world'.
Again she just stares at him with a puzzled look on her face.
Undeterred, he tries again, this time saying the Malaysian Airlines
motto 'Going beyond expectations'.Still no response
Could it be British Airways then? he wonders and tries "The World's favourite airline".
The woman looks at him sternly and says 'What the **** do you want?'
'Ah!' he says, sitting back with a smile on his face,
'Ryanair'"

Birmingham can be Heathrow's 3rd Runway
Birmingham Airport welcomes Conservative plan to scrap Heathrow's third runway
Oct 7 2009 by Jasbir Authi, Birmingham Post
Add a commentRecommend The chief executive of Birmingham Airport said the
terminal could act as an alternative to Heathrow's third runway.
Paul Kehoe said Conservative plans to scrap the Heathrow plan would help the
city claw back passengers who leave the region to travel from the London
terminal.
Mr Kehoe made his comments after Teresa Villiers, shadow secretary of state for
transport, said Birmingham would also be a greener option at the Conservative
Party Conference in Manchester yesterday.
She said the high-speed rail link from London to Birmingham would enable the
terminal to attract more passengers.
Mr Kehoe said: "Birmingham is ready to respond to any current or future
government initiatives.
"We already attract passengers from the home-counties who choose the
convenience, choice and accessibility of Birmingham over other alternatives. We
have plenty of capacity and, linked to high-speed rail, we are uniquely
positioned to not only claw back people from our own region, who make the long
journey to Heathrow, but to attract passengers from the overheated South-east.
"We will not just be London's third runway as we have our own traffic but by
attracting those who waver towards Heathrow to use Birmingham instead, will
create jobs and help to rebuild the local economy.
"Positioned at the heart of the country we are perfectly placed for those
visitors from abroad who want to experience all that the region, and further
afield, has to offer."
Ms Villiers said: "There comes a point when stuffing more and more flights into
the same overcrowded corner of the south of England starts to impose an
unacceptably high cost to our environment and to our quality of life."

It is an unassailable fact of life that bean counters rule at BHX
Bottom line is that in reality the first 50% of a full load on any low cost airline, if not 99%, have not really paid enough to fly!
