One of the DUB-ORK rotations in the Winter is being done by a Dublin based aircarft. Very disappointing if Centralwings are gone. Talk of PIK and LBA not being confirmed by well placed sources. Aerlingus have moved some of their flight crews to Cork.

The following is typical when it comes to Cork Airport rumors. Two conflicting reports from some higher ups in Ryanair about the the PIK and LBA rumors. One report discounts the whole thing and another agrees that there are moves for more routes ex Cork. You just got to love all the waffle when it comes to Cork Airport rumors. So, so typical!

Anyone hear anything on why yesterday's EI882 ORK to AGP made an en route diversion to Santiago De Compostela. Nice long runway there and if I remember from photos they have a bit of a dip on the final approach like there is on the 17 approach at Cork. It does not stop them from having a CATIII ILS, of course.

The White Airbus A310 made another appearance at Cork yesterday doing an LTE flight. She blew up some earth/grass around Taxiway C coming in and the sweepers had to be summoned in for the first time in ages. The stories about the sweepers and an Air Atlanta 747 some years ago at Cork are legend! Think the A310 is down to make yet another visit to Cork next Saturday along with the first of the short series of Eurofly charters from Italy with A320s.

It should be fairly lively next Sunday. Futura are hiring in an Air Slovakia 757 to do the FUA1247/8 which is retimed for around noon so all in all Cork will see no less than three working 757s throughout the day, the Astraeus, Monarch and the Slovak aeroplanes.

Now, if Cork could only get one of those to work the North Atlantic to allow her to take her rightful place amongst Ireland's transatlantic gateways!

Ryanair and Cork

Ryanair keep their cards very close when it comes to new routes. I'd say the final decision is made at a very high level. That's the nature of the business.

In the past speculation from inside and outside the airline about them expanding at Cork has been very wide of the mark although it should be remembered that they have 10 flights a day from there so their presence in Cork is not insignificant.

Tom

The EI882 on wednesday diverted due to a medical emergency onboard. The poor guy was de-planed and taken to a local hospital.

Thanks for the update. Hope the pax in question will be all right again soon and makes a good recovery. Bet he will end up paying an arm & a leg for the Spanish domestic flight from Santiago De C to Malaga if he choses to continue to his original destination.

Heard that Cork received a rare inbound diversion around tea time on Friday when the RE568 operating the Luton to Waterford had to divert and the outbound flight then operated ex Cork. Got Stand 3 for their trouble and the ramp all but empty at the time.

Another bitter sweet Madrid story. Pals of ours living near Zaragoza in the north of Spain need to return to Cork at relatively short notice at month's end/start of August and the party of four got return tickets ex Madrid to Cork for just Euro 104 each all in. To say they are pleased with the price is an understatemt. Pity it is all but a swansong.

Consultants!

http://www.rte.ie/business/2007/0716/presswatch.html

...the Cork Airport Authority (CAA) will be asked to consider a report from an aviation consultancy firm which recommends that the airport carry €50m to €60m of the €220m airport debt...

...many members of the 14-member board are concerned that the report focuses solely on the issue of the terminal debt and does not address other issues...
So it appears that more money has be WASTED on getting consultants to write a report for nothing!

At last some good news, a new route that is actually that and not trying to poach passengers off some other route. Have you heard anything on what the frequency will be?
I don't know do SkyEurope still market Bratislava as Bratislava/Vienna since they opened the Vienna base. However I think there is still a frequent bus service between Bratislava airport and Vienna. I'd say the route would do better with Cork based passengers if it were marketed as Vienna. It should do well anyway with immigrant traffic. Hopefully Ryanair won't suddenly decide to launch a Shannon-Bratislava service. Has anyone else noticed that Shannon-Madrid seems to have been axed from the end of October. Such a coincidence that it was launched shortly after Cork-Madrid and then dropped as soon as the Cork route was axed! I suppose its purpose was achieved.

Flights at 3 per week. Vienna would do well although it might put Malev under a bit of pressure. Hopefully Glasgow will also re-appear shortly.

Bratislava shows a start date of Tuesday October 30th in the booking engine. (However it's not actually bookable yet, probably tomorrow).

Thanks for that.

Did anyone see that Wizzair were intending to start Bratislava to Cork this spring?

I did a google of the route and this popped up: http://www.bratislavaguide.com/wizza...a-flights-2007

Cork-Bratislava now bookable. Promotional fare available of €5 each way plus tax. Works out at about €60 return all in. Hopefully the route will do well

Centralwings

The three routes are finally for sale. Warsaw and Wroclaw twice weekly and Krakow three times weekly. Krakow now has daytime flights which should mean that it will attract more Irish tourists who were put off by the nightime flights.

Some great news this week with the news of the Sky Europe service from Bratislava which will also be so handy for travel to Vienna in Austria. A good save too with the Central Wings flights from Krakow, Wroclaw and Warsaw now secured for the winter season.

Let us hope that the CAA roll up their sleeves and do a good job of helping promote both the new route from Bratislava and the all ready established ones from Central Wings. Certainly, the departures times ex Cork are now ideally fixed for Irish people looking for weekends away as up to now the times for Krakow in particular have been less than ideal. Time to encourage the remaining religious nuns and brothers from around Cork to take a pilgrimage trip to Pope John Paul's home town in Krakow etc!

Bratislava is a great shot in the arm for Cork Airport and between the working immigrant traffic from around Slovakia and the Czeck Republic and the weekenders from the Cork area visiting both Bratislava and points in Austria etc this new route should be, hopefully, okay.

Now, if only Madrid could have been saved.

However, all in all an encouraging few days for Cork Airport.

Corcaigh Abu!

Aer Lingus/Ryanair in Cork

Hi All

First post, I live in Cork and would be a frequent traveller through the airport.

I'm gutted Aer Lingus are shutting Ork-ALC for the winter, not even one flight a week. I flew last November to ALC and it was two thirds full. I went again in January, and it was one third full. I think they were flying 3 times a week to ALC and to reduce the winter schedule to zero is equally crazy. I checked the A.L. site a couple of days before we flew in january, as my sister in law was interested in going, but the price was about €250....and the plane was one third full in the end !!! It seems to me that Aer Lingus put little thought into an Alicante winter season apart from looking at the load factors.

There are still plenty of people with properties in the Alicante area. We, for example are going out again in November but this time through Malaga. Ok it is still Aer Lingus, but I'd imagine most will go through DUB or STN, with Ryanair....ironic that Ryanair have also mothballed the SNN-Murcia route for winter.

It's sad that the Airport debt issue has slipped under the radar, anyone know what the latest is on that ? Also, I can't understand why the unions at Cork Airport let Fianna Fail away with murder during the election. I was expecting an onslaught which never materialised. If the Cork people were moved, it was up to the people at the airport to get them going.

I know someone who works for Ryanair outside Cork, and they said that at the end of last year, jobs were advertised internally for a Cork hub (they were to base at least 4 planes in Cork) but then it all went quiet. They did say that Ryanair do things like that, and then move within a matter of weeks. So I guess they're playing a waiting game until they see how the Cork debt situation works out. Meanwhile, we in Cork are being left behind .

ORK-ALC was very poorly supported last winter. On the subject of the debt FF did lose a seat in the airport constituency.

Of course the unions and airport staff are asking for debt free but their real agenda is to stall the breakup of the 3 state airports for as long as possible and stay within the comfort zone of the DAA.
