Have you missed the news that American Airlines and Air Canada have both announced they are pulling out while Delta are pulling Atlanta. Continental and FlyGlobespan are also rumoured to be pulling out. If they do I personally would term that as a mass pullout

Yes AA and AC are leaving.

ATL will be summer only service. But you are saying the carrier is pulling out- They will be serving JFK year round

COA have stated very clearly they will continue with daily Newark services

Thats no "Mass" pullout!

No idea whats going on in the Globespan front....I did not hear much about loads or anything

No need to be jealous....Cork will have its transatlantic routes someday too

FR have publically stated that SNN is a concern for them, with results well short of expectations. Now, if FR can not make SNN work, then I cant see other carriers making it work. I am sure SNN can sustain an FR base in the long term, but perhaps with three aircraft, as opposed to the current 4.

SNN's troop traffic has all but evaporated - more revenue lost.

T/A flights are also decimated, with ORD likely to be lost from EI.

In the long term:

JFK - EI / DL
BOS - EI
EWR - CO
ATL - DL/seasonal.

Still a very impressive list for an airport the size of SNN.

With regards the troops- Omni have now set up a base, making up for the drop in numbers following World's withdrawal. North American are not as frequent. Still 3 or 4 ATA per day, with their new DC10 now

I'll agree its not a bad list at all.

Cork Airport has been doing very well in recent days with many corporate bizjet movements. I have heard that the chief kiddies at the CAA are now very pro bizjet traffic and if so this is very much encouraging. Long may it last. However, I understand that one Fraction movement last night had sought an overnight at Cork but it appears the request was turned down at the time and the business went to Shannon. However, Cork made up for it today with aircraft positioning back to Cork from snn.

The Mrs went to Stansted on Friday night on the FR908 and the load was all but full on an elderly EI-CSH. The Aer Arann loads have been very good too lately by all accounts which is great news. By the way I have an idea for a new Cork route. It has often been in my mind but after meeting some personalities from the said area this evening I am more enthused than ever. Guess a chat with some of the local parties in Cork might be the next move.

What is less good news is that the Central Wings flights from Wroclaw and Krakow still remain unbookable for the winter schedule. This situation must be of concern now and I wonder how long Cork Airport can go on before the situation is clarified one way or the other for winter?

Again, what a pity about Madrid. What a crying shame it could not have been made to work a little better. A very bad blow indeed.

Ill believe those routes when I see them, perhaps though. So are FR looking to base a second a/c at ORK? This is something that has been heard before.....

Ryanair/Cork

PIK wouldn't surprise me as FR can avail of incentives and Marketing support on the route once the 12 months since Loganair's withdrawal is up.

It would also tie in with the strong rumours that Cork is to get back its Glasgow service for the winter.
I'd be surprised if they fly to Leeds as RE already serve that route and so they would have to pay full charges. Of course that didn't stop them from competing on Dublin and Gatwick.

FR Prestwick & Leeds Bradford to Cork? Hmm. Cant ever tell with the Ryanair boys can you? Guess both routes would fit in nicely in a convenient and compensatory way for the Cork Airport Authority if the Central Wings services from Wroclaw, Krakow & Warsaw are dropped for the winter. Get them out of a little bind of being made look too foolish in the way they were blowing about Central Wings earlier in the year.

Aer Arann would hardly be too welcoming of the situation though if the rumored routes begin. In reply they might be put in the position of having to offer a full double daily EDI and a full daily LBA to try and spoil the FR move? Cant see them just rolling over to Ryanair without a response.

Have you all seen the interesting Aer Lingus bus shelter ads around Cork in recent weeks? The theme is that you as a pax bring a little bit of Cork with you to wherever you are going, eg Berlin, Warsaw etc. Different landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and the tall building in Warsaw get all painted up in red and white which are the Cork colours. Good ads. Just a pity they were not dreamt it up a little earlier for the summer. Madrid might have had a chance to be saved. One of the best weekend capitals you can visit and it is going at the end of August! Did my bit anway, got a pal & his family of four to go there last week.

Still mighty peeved off about Madrid.

Perhaps Cork will get one of the aircraft FR are threatening to withdraw from Stansted and operate the three STN rotations and the two new routes. With a bit of crossover between 2 based aircraft all these routes could be operated. They would also get the publicity of withdrawing aircraft from STN without actually reducing frequency.

If Cork people want routes like Madrid to work they will have to support them. Many people are comparing prices from Shannon before booking to City's like Paris, Barcelona Alicante and Rome.

Ryanair will always be cheaper in this situation. However when you add in the cost and inconvenience of longer journey times at both ends you'd wonder does it amount to penny pinching.

I've heard that Aerlingus are reasonably happy with their Cork operation; remember they have a monopoly on most routes. However they will not persist with loss making routes.

PIK I would see as being quite likely at some point if not soon. LBA would only happen with and extra based aircraft or an LBA base. If they were adding an aircraft and a route, I'd have thought Charleroi or Hahn would be more profitable. Add to that that they'll be starting SNN-LBA in November and won't want to put unnecessary pressure on a new route and I'd be surprised to see it. Then again Ryanair have a history of surprising me!

As regards Madrid... It suffers from lack of two-way traffic, which almost all the other city break destinations have. Amsterdam, Berlin and Paris carry a lot of tourists into Ireland, while Prague and Budapest have the support of immigrant communities. The bucket and spade routes can generally sustain themselves (over the summer at least) with Irish passengers only. Without the inbound passengers, Madrid probably needed an Iberia code-share and with Aer Lingus out of one world and no longer code-sharing out of Dublin, that wasn't ever likely to happen.

I came through Cork a couple of days ago with EI, first time for over a year so first trip through the new terminal. Some surprises, like seeing both Malev and Wizzair in from Budapest together. In Cork. Now who would have thought that possible say 10 years ago ?

Whoever the architect was for the new terminal clearly had no idea about designing an airport. We parked on a non-airbridge stand (as most of them are) away from the building and it's then a long march around the apron perimeter to the terminal building, an extraordinary arrangement. The walking route is only about 6 feet wide behind all the ramp equipment and around several corners, separated from the apron by just a bit of non-continuous crash barrier, finally entering the terminal by a back door. Passengers were walking both ways in the dark round this, to and from flights simultaneously, and having to squeeze past each other. Whoever designed a new terminal in 2007 with this sort of arrangement seemed not to have a clue.

The terminal building itself has much wasted open space and then various functions squeezed into corners. It looks like the first year architecture class went to Stansted and looked at the terminal building structure there, then came back and said they would design an airport. Perhaps they are the grandchildren of whoever laid the airport out in the first place on a windswept hilltop with the main runway at right angles to the prevailing winds !

LBA and PIK will operate from Cork 3 and 4 times a week.At the moment there are no plans for a second A\C at ORK.A DUB based a\c will operate DUB-ORK-DUB to facilitate this.

Centralwings

According to Wikipedia the three Centralwings routes are to end in October. Has there been an official announcement? This is a huge blow to the airport to lose three routes. What were loads like? I'm surprised that Krakow in particular could not support a 2 or 3 times weekly nightime service. It should hopefully ensure the future of the Wizzair services. Also Wizzair have recently announced services to Wroclaw so perhaps they could start a Wroclaw service?

WHBM sums it up nicely! Go to the top of the class!

So, it looks like it will be Prestwick and Leeds Bradford ex Cork. You have got to hand it to the Cork crowd for the usual minimum of creativity. Prestwick for Glasgow, yes, a new route in the strict sense but Glasgow has obviously been served from Cork previously by the Loganair operation up to last September and LBA is an established RE route all ready following on from a previous offering from bmi regional.

Is there any imagination at all between the twin ears of Ryanair and the Cork Airport Authority to try purely new routes? As is suggested above why not have a try at Charleroi or Hahn or any number of destinations in Italy, Spain, France etc? And now, it also looks like the new PIK and LBA will be operated by the sole Cork aeroplane. The usual marvellous committment by Ryanair to Cork Airport and all the crowd at Cork can do is swallow it all hook, line & sinker.

Every cloud has a silver lining and Cork has to pay thanks to all the rain for keeping all the flights ex-Cork so full this summer!

There was a little bit of nostalgia today with the arrival of the former JetMagic Embraer ERJ-135 on a visit to Cork. She is now on the UK reg as G-CDFS. Like with Madrid going JetMagic will continue to haunt some of us in Cork for a good while yet.

Another crying shame.

New Ryanair routes from Cork

  • The PIK route is fantastic news and a very welcome edition to Cork airport's route offering.
  • Ryanair's policy to not expand at Cork while taxes remain high is obviously not as strict as threatened. These new routes will result in FR bringing more passengers to Cork airport.
  • Leeds Bradford is already served. Of all routes, why go for that one! I would have nearly expected them to choose East Midlands before Leeds Bradford.

Mere speculation right now

LBA could be operated by a Cork aircraft if a Dublin aircraft performs one of the EIDW-EICK rotations

EGPK could be operated by an aircraft based their easily
