Centralwings

Has anyone else noticed that Centralwings have put most of their Winter 2007/2008 flights for sale but none of the flights from Cork are bookable beyond October. Could they be pulling out of Cork?

Ork-bhx

Do any of you guys know if BHX-ORK will run this coming winter? there does seem to be space for it to operate? I frequently use this flight and have found it more punctual than WW and often has been a full load of passengers
Cheers

A319's and 737-700 are only used on high yield low volume business routes from a select number of cities in europe to US. Can't see them being used ex Cork as shoppers etc would be much more price sensitive.

An extended range 757 would be the optimum aircraft for ORK BOS and ORK JFK.

Aer Lingus Cork-Manchester & Birmingham

Some good news from EI. BHX is to go daily from end of October, while Manchester is to return operating four times per week. All flights seem to be operated by Cork based aircraft! Will something else have to be dropped? Presumably MWFS to Manchester will be more popular than TTS.

Well they have moved the Berlin flight from Saturday to Sunday from the beginning of november though the online timetable says otherwise. We got an itinerary change this morning giving us an extra day in Berlin..

Am back in the Rebel County for a long weekend. Was very glad to read the D'Evenin' D'Echo last night and see Cork Airport being talked about on pages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8!

And now I hear that the Airport debt as an election issue is also the top story this hour on 96fm.

Fair dues!

Cork to Amsterdam is now showing up as twice daily every day through the winter.

As someone who has used the route a lot for work, it doesn't surprise me at all. Even on mid-week flights in the middle of February, I never saw an aircraft less than 75% full and judging by the prices I payed and the number of business travellers on the flight, the yields must have been pretty good.

With that frequency, Amsterdam finally becomes a real alternative to Heathrow for flight connections.

One thing that's interesting with this route is that I remember fling it in a 737-500 in an Amsterdam Cork flight on a Friday evening at the start of the decade. There were fewer than 40 people on the flight. A lot of patience has been shown in building the route to what it is now, it's a pity that other destinations are required to show a return so quickly nowadays.

I think the KL code-share has really helped EI to AMS from ORK. KL/NW offer some fantastic fares, to lots of destinations....

ORK/AMS-SFO-HNL-MSP//EWR-JFK-AMS//ORK €900 P/P.

So, that makes...
LHR 4X daily for winter
AMS 2X daily
CDG 1X daily
BHX 1X daily
MAN 4X weekly.

Not too bad at all. Especially considering the WW dalies to MAN and BHX. Along with RE to a whole host of UK & domestic routes.

Brian.

I've heard Cork Airport is to sponsor this year's Cork Midsummer Festival. While sponsoring public events is a nice thing to do, can they really afford it considering the state of finances at the moment? I presume they think they will get extra business from it but will it really attract enough business to justify the cost? Would it not have been better to use the money to buy another badly needed airbridge!

Marketing should be an investment that produces a return, so it still has a role.

I'd query the thinking involved in sponsoring something in Cork though. People in Cork are going to use Cork Airport if practical. Where the airport needs marketing is in places like Kilkenny and Wexford that are equididtant from Cork and Dublin Airports. People in those places may not even be aware of which routes are available from Cork and be so used to using Dublin because of its greater route offering that they don't even check what is available from Cork.

Cork Marketing

During John Smyths time in Cork they sponsored the Clonmel Races and a Greyhound racing event in Waterford. Southeast catchment area presents great opportunities although most people there gravitate towards Dublin.

Vastly improved road network means that Cork is far easier to access.

According to the Aer Lingus thread, there is an article in today's Irish Times stating that Aer Lingus and Aer Arann are in detailed negotiations regarding a ticketing link on both websites to allow passengers to book flights from Cork/Kerry/Galway/Knock/Sligo/Donegal to the US and Dubai via Dublin on just one ticket. It would also allow allow passengers to check in baggage straight to their final destination, so would essentially be like a codeshare. The primary target is passengers travelling from Cork, who would otherwise have travelled via Heathrow or Schipol. If it happens it will be a significant boost to RE's fight against FR on the Cork-Dublin route, since it will attract new passengers as well as ensuring that all passengers travelling via Dublin to the US with EI are carried by them

On another note, the first of the new RE planes arrived in Dublin yesterday. She will do a tour of Ireland before entering service on the Cork-Dublin route. They have an interesting press release on their website about the environmental impact. One of the more startling claims is that the new ATR72-500 will use less fuel on a Cork-Dublin flight than a jet aircraft will use for taxiing and taking off. If that really is the case, FR's fuel cost per passenger on the Cork-Dublin route must be a lot higher than RE's

Aer Lingus Winter 07/08

Aer Lingus timetables for winter seem to have changed. Prague is to go 4 weekly from October (the same as last winter), and will now have morning flights instead of evening flights at present. Rome will continue 3 per week but will also switch to a morning flight. Amsterdam seems to have gone back down to 11 weekly, strange that they would increase to 14 then drop back to 11, perhaps they weren't able to get slots! Dropping the Amsterdam rotations means theres now a hole in the schedules on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings. A new route yet to be announced??

I know that Kracow was mentioned as a new route for EI but that is already served by Central Wings and Wizz fly to nearby Katowice from Cork.

Evening slots at Schiphol are not normally that hard to get. It's slots before midday that are a problem.

Looking at the departure time for the Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday flights they loaded, they wouldn't be able to go a hell of a lot further than Amsterdam unless they were willing to arrive back in Cork during the early hours.

Ryanair expansion at Shannon

Some good and some bad news from the expansion at Shannon.
Good- Rome being axed, should boost Cork-Rome as it is now the only service to Rome from outside Dublin.
Bournemouth being axed, should mean the Cork-Southampton service which recently had a 4 month break should survive

Bad- Birmingham 6 times weekly. May affect the Cork-Birmingham service.
Tenerife once weekly - Will it affect Cork-Tenerife?
Leeds three times weekly - This will surely affect RE on Cork-LBA
Edinburgh to increase to daily - This may affect RE ORK-EDI, have you seen the fares they charge?
Manchester to increase to 6 weekly - May affect ORK-MAN a bit

So now when an Irish airport gains some routes its bad news and when it loses routes its good news.
What a sad attitude.

It's bad news for Cork when Ryanair start a competing route from Shannon because they'll sell seats at next to nothing to try to drive the Cork carrier off the route. FR are trying to make things difficult for Cork and Galway, just look at how many references there are to Galway in the press release

Cork base

EI pilots have accepted a Cork base and crews will start moving to Cork almost immediately. There are also fresh reports that a ORK-JFK service may be announced shortly with a 757 aircraft being used.

SNN-BHX will be daily (not 6 weekly)

The Tenerife one will be interesting. What demand there is for people to fly from/to TFN I do not know. My presumption its small!

Aer Lingus might be OK on TFS.......
