The overhead was taken during a bombing raid. 100 squadron hangers are on the left, the hangers on the bottom are occupied by a French squadron.

You certainly had me scratching my head with the word "Independent" - I completely missed the significance of the capital 'I'.

I suppose 70 nm is "not too far" if you're flying a Mirage 2000. ;)

Eastern Europe?

Hard to tell from this brief glimpse, but it looks a bit like Sorong (WASS) in Indonesia.

It doesn't look like eastern Europe to me, my first thoughts were Africa, is that sand on the ground, could this be a coastal airport?

Domine Eduard Osok Airport (who he?) in Sorong in Indonesian Papua it is - a (much needed) replacement for the old Jeffman Island Airport (seen offshore in the picture below). The Ajamaru Plateau in the distance on the original picture

Good question: I've googled him and the only things that come up refer to the airport that is named after him. Looks like the airport is vastly more famous than he is!
