Not Iwo Jima - too far west.

Heathrow Harry 1st Nov 2017 16:44

New Caledonia?

nvubu 1st Nov 2017 18:11

Not New Caledonia - still too far West, and also too far south.

It is by the seaside :ok:

SMOKEON 1st Nov 2017 19:26

Dillingham Airfield, HI. ?

nvubu 1st Nov 2017 21:48

SMOKEON has it - known as Mokuleia Army Airfield when the picture was taken.

You have control.

SMOKEON 2nd Nov 2017 07:37

Thank you,nvubu.
Open House.

nvubu 7th Nov 2017 14:23

All gone a bit quiet, so here's another one from me.

This airfield has been photobucketed before - so all the images have disappeared.

QANTAS V jet, Air France stairs, troops disembarking.

Where I am right now? Tan Son Nhat?

nvubu 7th Nov 2017 14:43

That's the one, didn't think it would last long, and thought you'd get it.

India Four Two 7th Nov 2017 14:56

Thanks nvubu.

It’s pushing 2300 local, the beer is flowing and the locals are friendly, so open house. ;)

nvubu 9th Nov 2017 12:50

Let's see if this one lasts any longer

Possibly a “Lima site”?

nvubu 9th Nov 2017 13:51

Had to look up "Lima" site. It isn't in Laos and it doesn't appear on this list

India Four Two 9th Nov 2017 15:47

I’m not surprised you had to look it up. The Lima sites were secret!

A visit to Long Tieng (LS20A) is on my bucket list.

Is your mystery aerodrome a bit further east?

nvubu 9th Nov 2017 18:19

Quite a bit further east, in the south as well.

Heathrow Harry 10th Nov 2017 17:07

Borneo/Kalimantan??

nvubu 10th Nov 2017 17:08

Not Borneo/Kalimantan. I42 is on the right track. South Vietnam.

Heathrow Harry 10th Nov 2017 17:17

- but he kno ws that part of the world like the back of his hand........... unfair! Unfair!!

nvubu 10th Nov 2017 18:15

Ah, but I foxed him with Quy Nhon/Qui Nhon last month.

I thought I knew a lot about airfields in Vietnam, but this was a complete surprise. A major airfield completely enveloped by a city.
Although to be fair, this one is still recognisable from the air.

India Four Two 11th Nov 2017 01:11

Quite a bit further east, in the south as well.
Ah, the vagaries of the English language. By “a bit further east” I meant Vietnam and so I was also mislead by “Quite a bit ...”. ;)

Caution - thread drift.

No research today for me, as I’m visiting Yangon for the first time. A friend is showing me around and our first stop, very appropriate given the date, is the Taukkyan War Cemetery - 6400 graves and 27000 names of soldiers with no known grave, listed on the Rangoon Memorial. Very thought provoking.
