…….personally I prefer to use the clues provided by the picture...... |
I dont use Google Image search but these days its hard to avoid Google totally
I can't see Dook's image of "Boston-Logan" so can't comment but it isn't Boston............................ right country |
The spiel which goes with the photo is "United Airlines Douglas approaching the gate at Boston-Logan, December (Photo: Bob Coolidge)".
On the site he says "DC-8 N8028U taxis at Boston in December 1973." |

So what's wrong with "United Airlines DC-8" as a search ?
as mentioned, personally I would have used the information in the picture, as well as my background knowledge, e.g. just across the water from Fornebu there were some nice houses like those in the picture. Providing the picture's on the net, someone without any aviation knowledge can google 'United DC8' (admittedly, they'd need to be able to recognise a DC8) and find the image. As LHRH points out, google is fairly ubiquitous so maybe I'm being a bit of a Luddite here. It was a suggestion. No offence was intended, apologies if any was taken... |
None was taken.
edit: However, I do feel that all available resources may be used to try to find an answer. I shall now be a spectator only on the thread. |
No no no..... we can't set a thread into one mode - we'd all be sending in contributions on vellum by runner if we believed that
We live in the modern world and we have to accept the goods with the bads - change will come whether we like it or not The challenge for posters now is to find pictures that AREN'T already on the web - or are extremely obscure on Page 234 of the search - ones from personal collections or old books are probably the best We could compromise - the OP could indicate if they are happy to have open search or restricted so no google image search for example... I am happy for people to use whatever they can on the latest picture for a start Dook - please reconsider |
I'm truly sorry to hear that, dook. Apologies if I came across as being critical or picky. It is of course your choice, but personally I wouldn't let a pernickety little so-and-so like me to dissuade me from taking part.
|
Back to the challenge there is a good clue if you look at the background carefully...................
|
The clues you refer to, are they derelict slipways?
|
There does appear to be a watery element in the background..
I think that's a leve behind the runway.... but not Schipol...... |
Portland Airport ,Oregon?
|
There was a contributor to this thread a few years ago who was answering correctly by plugging the challenge images into Image Search. I think that is pointless. However searching for for a particular aircraft that’s in the image is fair game in my opinion. |

India42' guess of New England had me sweating but of course there are TWO Portland's in the USA that take jet airliners......................... Over to SMOKEON |
Thank you,H.H.
The Kaiser and Zidell shipyards were across the Columbia river from Portland airport, hence my question about the derelict slipways in your photograph. No Google images were hurt in finding the answer to your challenge. I am with dook on this silly matter. Open House, and cherrio. |

Looks rather like the Luton of several decades ago - but would LH have been there?
|
Certainly NOT Luton................... quite a long away from there
PS - actually there may be a reason it look lie Luton now I think about it.............................. |
Are they tropical looking trees visible under the wing? And a tall building? I'm going to kick things off with a shot at Miami (haven't a clue why it might look like Luton though...).
|
Certainly more tropical than Luton .... not N America though......................
Possibly the design teams (if there were such things when the airports were built) had links? |
Africa? Somewhere on the Hunting route?
