Sea side? Not sure I like that big hill just off the runway.............

If they were intending to land they were SOL!!
Reminds me of my old instructor's story. With ATA and delivering a Wellington, there was a construction crew on the taxiway with a steam roller, so he took to the grass, being guided by on of the work crew. Given the thumbs up to go ahead, he opened up and knocked the funnel off the stream roller! Obviously they had no idea that the trailing edge of the wing was lower than the leading edge! |
Small shadows - so near the equator - or nearer than London - so say 40N to 40S
the guy on the right looks like he has a US style hard hat on ....... but it might be a pithhelmet...... |

Ah well,
C130. Certainly not in the 40s & only an outside chance of the late 50s. Probably not a Consul, either ! |
2 photos are 1969 & 1970.

Is it Vietnam?

Vietnam it is

Seeing as you provided a map, nvubu, I've broken my self-imposed rule of not using Google Maps. The big black dot on the map in the tower seems to be just inland from a place called Qui Nhon, but there isn't anything that resembles an airfield there!

Well spotted, jensdad. Your observation made me look at Quy Nhon/Qui Nhon again, which I had previously dismissed, as my search led me to Phu Cat Airport, which doesn't have any hills nearby.
My new research led me to this: The base is now covered with commercial buildings while the former runway is now Nguyễn Tất Thành road. The city is served commercially by Phu Cat Airport. and to the attached 1967 picture. I thought I knew a lot about airfields in Vietnam, but this was a complete surprise. A major airfield completely enveloped by a city. Great challenge, nvubu. If correct, I think jensdad deserves to take the helm. PS The name for the street down the runway, Nguyễn Tất Thành, was one of Hồ Chí Minh's aliases. |
Very gracious of you, I42, but if you're correct I'll let you have this one (I'm still feeling a bit guilty about being given Baden Sollingen when I actually thought it was Lahr :) ). I just gauged roughly where the black dot was and had a quick look for anything resembling an airfield, without any success!

I thought the map would give it away. Qui Nhon it is.
Here's the tower from the outside. https://x31ivg.bl3301.livefilestore....&cropmode=none I started with this image - which does match up with the layout of the roads today. https://atlsjg.bl3301.livefilestore....&cropmode=none Well done Jensdad, but as offered - I42 has the helm |
