Gloucester EGBJ

Did a quick search but not much coming up. Just wondered if people have any stories or hints/tips from Gloucester EGBJ? I have a free landing voucher for there and also quite fancy what I imagine will be a scenic flight round London and over the Cotswolds from North Weald-Gloucester. Is there anywhere nice to walk from the airport terminal, or will it require an expensive taxi ride to get anywhere worth while?

Many thanks in advance!

Gloucestersire...

Well - bus / taxi (2-3 miles) into Cheltenham for a large selection of shops and eating places. Same for Gloucester (they have the Cathedral and Historic docks as well - more shops and eating places).

Gloucester Cathedral, an Attraction in Gloucester, Gloucestershire. Search for Gloucestershire Attractions.

Many will grab a good feed at the on site cafe/bar and just watch the flying - nice to site outside if the weather is fine and admire the view over to the west and Malvern Hills....as well as the fixed wing/heli/biz jet and commercial traffic.

Great place.

EGBJ is situated in between two popular shopping towns, Gloucester itself and Cheltenham. Good if your passengers want to go shopping . The latter is usually regarded as being a bit more 'up market'. Both towns are a reasonably short taxi ride away.
The airport itself is quite busy and has a fair amount of business type commercial traffic. They are however GA friendly and fuel is reasonably priced. There is a Transair shop at the airport. (Other pilot supply shops are available - but not at EGBJ!)
If you go, check you have an up to date airport diagram for taxiing!

Sounds like it'll definitely be worth a day out! May even stop off at a couple of strips around the Cotswolds, I've always enjoyed driving around that part of the country and I'm sure flying will be even better. I've just discovered on the airport website that there is actually a bus which stops 900m from the terminal and runs to either Cheltenham or Gloucester, so that seems like a good option. Thanks for the help all!

Flew into Gloucester from Biggin in the club PA28 on Friday. As always, they're very welcoming and GA friendly. The staff (nice girls and ladies) at the check-in are great and will offer all assistance possible. Yes it's £21 to land unfortunately. The airfield pub is very close, hospitable with views over the field. The airfield itself is set in beautiful countryside welcome after the flatlands around Brize (who themselves will give you a zone transit and help out). Go there, enjoy the scenery, then plan your next trip further into Wales or perhaps to Shobdon.

Gloucester, ah yes, now there is a pleasant destination.

If you approach from the south Gloucester nestles in a bowl pretty much surrounded by low hills. For that reason it often seems to have its own micro climate.

Arriving over Cheltenham dont forget to spot GCHQ - or the donut. It is our top secret installation where they film Spooks and are of course probably monitoring your every call on the radio. At any rates it is an impressive structure.

The airports fine. The daily commercial service to the Isle of Man causes a little disruption. If you get caught by passenger loading time or departure expect a little delay. The cafe (through the "terminal" turn left) is pleasant enough and better than most.

Gloucester is a dump - dont bother - unless you like Cathedrals.

Cheltenham is a gem - good resteraunts, shops and pleasant enough to just stroll around. Look out for the booze shop with a different - they sell a vast selection of fine malts and other spirits and run a little brasserie. If you are not flying, a glass of port and their cheese board is very pleasant.

As the Head of Operations, I must say I pleased to see the positive feedback!

Not much more to add, plenty to see and do locally. Gloucester cathedral is one of the finest in the UK, unfortunately, it's in the middle of Gloucester, which certainly isn't one of the UK's finest cities! Cheltenham is lovely; great food, shopping etc.

A couple of 'points of order.' Not that it applies in stansted_dan's case, but the landing fee is discounted to £15 with a 50ltr fuel uplift (and our fuel is one is very cheap - Sept '09 £1.41 inc VAT and new Duty rate). We've changed our security procedures during the scheduled services and GA folks can now use the 'tradesman's entrance' without delay, unless you'd prefer to be frisked by one of our Firemen/Security staff.

One of the prettiest parts of the country to fly in, with no controlled airspace to worry about. Nothing finer than a bimble down the Severn Estuary after departure, turn right at Chepstow than back up the Wye Valley to Ross-on-Wye.

Gloucester shopping is pretty downmarket but there is a new "designer outlet" recently opened that is a reasonable destination for bored lady passengers (well, my mother approved ). It adjoins the docks complex and is not too big - good for a couple of hours max if you are flying in for a day trip.
The cathedral is 10 minutes walk away and always good for kids who want to see where parts of Harry Potter were filmed.

Well here's some more then - great place to visit just for somewhere to go. Excellent service, good caff, friendly reception from everyone and also got a 20% discount on the landing because I have a silencer.

Agree with all the above. Friendly, helpful, professional. They manage to keep a good balance between the scheduled services (few) and GA (many). I can vouch for the no-hassle treatment of PPLs during scheduled services - when I last went the departure lounge was full of people going to the Isle of Man (I think) but we were allowed out to the apron with the minimum of fuss.

A bit pricey... but not for what you get. I always do an IFR approach because if you land off it, the approach fee is included in the landing fee anyway, and I need the practice. If you do an NDB, though, beware the notorious hill effects on the 27 approach - compare it to the GPS and the view out of the window and you will see why the minima are so high...!

*tick* Made a complete fool of myself taxiing first time I went.

In addition to wonderful shops and an excellent Art Gallery and Museum Cheltenham has loads of open spaces, parks and gardens to relax in.

Planning on using that voucher myself this month.
Wee bit on the expensive side otherwise but as has been said already, cracking pub (very nice sitting out if the weather is good) and good shop which is rather handy for us still working towards ppl.

Flew there on Sunday morning. Borders has closed down by me so didn't manage to get a free landing voucher.

Nice building, some great planes (Gloster Javelin, Citations etc) very proffesional/friendly staff ... despite there being 4 aircraft in the circuit and 3 aircraft joining the circuit (included myself as No2 decending deadside) making the workload heavey I will be going back there soon

Hi

I had my first lesson this weekend with Cotswold Aero Club.

I have to say that I really was pleasantly surprised by the whole operation there. Admittedly it was helped by the glorious weather but my partner was perfectly happy hanging around the Aviator bar and watching all the traffic.

Really wide mixture of aircraft including biz jets, the scheduled turboprop Manx flight, a Tiger Moth (I think), lots of helicopters and of course plenty of single engined GA bits and pieces.

I used to live in Ross, so know the area quite well.

I agree with all the previous comments, but would just add another quirky thing to do in Gloucester- The Packaging museum(Robert Opie?) on the docks. Fascinating little place showing, surprise surprise, the history of packaging. Some real blasts from the past there!

It's also very close to the cathedral too.

Unless the city centre has been nuked in the last few years, then I'm afraid to say it has the feel of a rundown inner city fovella

Oh, and on behalf of my friends at Aston Down(Cotswold GC), don't go bumbling through their overhead on your way over from Laandon!.
