Komo Kapers

Got a few shots somewhere that I'll have to drag out of the old Grouper in pievan and I think one of myself at Komo.

I remember one trip out of Komo late afternoon, just airborne bound for Kiunga when advised by ATC Madang that I was to divert to Tari for a medical emergency. After some chatter trying to find someone else to do ther job, I went to Tari to find two locals in pretty bad shape waiting to be airlifted out. It transpired that they had 'had the bone' pointed at them and were on their last legs, even though they had been in a tribal fight, displaying numerous axe cuts to the head and elswhere.

By this time it was dark, and Madang gave me the option Magang or Moresby. Being a rather devout coward and not wanting to traverse the mountains to Madang I opted for Moresby (That was where home was too) But I did not have enough fuel for either destination. So back to Komo in the dark, landing with landing lights, refuelled and departed again for POM.

The LASALT was a bit high but once I got over Lake Kutubu, revised thae LASALT and continued on with a reasonable cabin temp. The hero's in the back survived the trip only to pass away some weeks later.

I remember Bougair made the decision to buy a Twin Otter, a la the successful machines in Talair. They engaged a consultant - ooops, should be Consultant (with a Capital C), cashed him up and sent him around the world to find a suitable aircarft - but forgot to give my a photo of a Twotter.

And that's how they ended up with a Pievan. I don't think I ever saw it with the all the bits attached and operating. It seemed to be always missing an engine or undercarriage. To keep the staff occupied during one of it's long term periods not flying, they painted it - with house paint and paint brushes.

Geeze Sharpie, I didn't realise they were 10 kts slower than a Twotter?? Have many tail strikes from seagulls or Islanders?

Tinpis; Re the PNG Aviation Medicals; according to my last log book 'Jabber Jim' did two of mine!
Was packed off to him one fine day when feeling like death warmed up. He said I had a 'vitamin deficiency' and ordered the usual jab!! Three days later and feeling a damn size worse I staggered off to another Medico. A Dr Solomon (a National) took one look at me and said,
"you've got malaria son!"
Well, it certainly was'nt a vitamin deficiency!!!!!!

I've been diagnosed with malaria 3 times in the last 20 years, each time as the result of a blood test. Each time, I went for a second opinion and the test proved negative. First test was always in PNG (will I never learn? ) and the second was always in Cairns.

I dunno about the tests here these days, but used to be a regular occurrence for test results to be mixed up and given to the wrong people.

And then there was the time that a mate was diagnosed with malaria, without a blood test, and given a huge dose of Valium!

Four 'n Twenty

One cruised at 155kts and t'other at 150kts. A tad slower than the 300 twotter. We had a hellva problem keeping ahead of the Hagen eagle! b(and the common finch)

Bill Funston has an unit in Manila plus a house a bit further south about 30ks.

Quite often see him at Vasco's Pub/Restaurant/museum here at Subic.
Next time I'm here, I'll sent you his email.(still no landline)

Always did my meds with Jungle Jim and never had any problems, though his declining hearing possibly helped to give good blood pressure results!

That Bougair pievan was a disgrace and whover bought it should have been shot. It cruised at 135kts at 75 gallons per hour. For rule of thumb flight planning, we used 60 gph at 150ks.

Jungle Jim

I had a mossie bite on a shin that turned very septic after scratching and within three days was a great big tropical ulcer 20mm across. When my old mate Jungle saw this, he said, 'That IS a good one. We'll soon fix that!'

After 4-5 injections into the centre and around the edges(with little deadening effect) Jungle appeared with his scapula and dug the ulcer out, leaving me near in tears and near screaming!

After dosing the bleeding wound with copious quantities of powder, James said, ' that'll fix it'. By golly it did. Healed up very quickly. Jungle may have been a bit rough at times, but he did fix up a few tropical problems.

Air Yugimi

Heard that dear old Pixie is in strife with their Fokker aircraft and could/would/should be banned from operating them within PNG (and Oz) as they are not fitted with the latest GPWS. No doubt the opposition aircraft ARE fitted and this could be the reason the a bit of 'leaning on' Pixie!

Any comment ozex.

Depends who you're referring to as the "opposition", Sharpie. But, no, in a matter such as this, I cannot make any comment here.

Pixie

Ha Tinpis.

I was sort of quoting from Friday's Posguria that said that Pixie was (again) on the verge of having its Fokker operation to Oz banned.

Later (not in paper) I heard that the local governing authority had rescinded the dispensation to operate for a couple of more months domestically, allowing time to acquire and fit the units.

I did not expect Ossie to fall for the bait, but worth a try.

I laughs at the same edition of the Pos Guria the boys sure did learn the art of shystering if nothing else in the last 30 years.

‘Bogus’ K60m claims thrown out

MORE than K60 million in bogus claims against the state were thrown out of court recently thanks to State-appointed Paraka Lawyers.
Paraka Lawyers had discovered that most of the claims were bogus and the law firm has been dismissing them through the courts. The firm had saved the state more than K900 million since its engagement over two years ago.
The recent fraudulent claims thrown out of court included a compensation claim by Bunga Land Group for K34 million, a K20.5 million claim by former members of the Fly River Provincial Government and a K7 million claim by villagers from Korekoreto in Eastern Highlands Province.
The Bunga Land Group had taken the state and the National Lands Commission to court on April 2 last year, seeking the enforcement of a purported land compensation award of K34 million which the plaintiffs claimed was awarded to them on June 2000, as compensation for the land on which Bulolo township is located.
But Justice Moses Jalina last Thursday dismissed the claim after being satisfied that the plaintiff’s claim was time-barred and was baseless and disclosed no cause of action against the state.
In the case of the former members of the Fly River Provincial Government, National Court judge Justice Cathy Davani set aside the proceedings in which the plaintiffs had secured a consent judgment for K20.5 million. The consent order was nullified.
The former provincial members, comprising former premier Isidore Kaseng and 24 others, had filed the suit against the state claiming entitlements and salaries to the value of K7.8 million, which was later inflated to K20.5 million in purported consent settlement with the office of the Solicitor-General.
Justice Davani ruled that despite the court’s sanction of the consent orders, the endorsement did not include the consent of other parties, and that the office of the Solicitor-General lacked the powers to settle, except the Attorney General’s Department.
The other bogus claim pursued by plaintiff’s Otti Apio and 510 others for K7 million was also dismissed.

My bold.
Should read saved the aussie taxpayer....

Question

G'day Wantoks,
Just off the topic a bit, can anyone (Ozexpat) give me some idea what's involved in getting my PNG SCPL back. I'm thinking about coming back up as I love the place that much. My licence lapsed about 12 months ago. I have heard that CAA have changed to the new rules.

I.e: How any exams have to be done etc.

Lukim.

G'day Bell Man. I'm not involved in FCL and have not kept up with all the changes since the Civil Aviation Rules came into force last year. However, I can tell you that you won't ever get a SCPL here again. It'll have to be an ATPL.

So far as I'm aware, if you've got a current licence from somewhere else, can meet the PNG medical requirements, you should only have to do the ATPL Air Law exam and the IFR exam.

You should find more information on the rules, exams and sample exam questions on the Aviation Safety Regulation Directorate website. Many parts of the site are still under construction, but you should find some of the information that you need in the references to CAR Part 61, including ACs in that series.

Hope this helps.

A service was held in St Josephs Church, Boroko yesterday(Thursday 4th) attended by Bob's wife and sons, along with many of his friends from PNG, Australia and the Philippines.

Another service will be held next week in Sydney and later, Bob's ashes will be scattered over Moresby Harbour.

Ages ago I posed the question but never really got an answer so here goes again......
Would anyone really care to 'fess up!! Just what is/was the (terribly unofficial of course) PNG Altitude Record for BN2's??
Still remember the Late Denis Douglas telling me with a pitying smile on his face that my 17,000' was 'far far short' and when I asked what it really was his adamant refusal to tell me!
Come on you lot!! Tinpis, Chuckles, Ozmate, Sharpie, Herk Jerk (and where are you these days?) someone knows and they aint sayin'!!!!

Good grief pinky...I have had a C185 at 17000....been up around 18500 in a Bn2...25000 in a turbo 206, 402 and a -300 Twotter....interesting that try as we might we couldn't get the Dash 7 to 25k..empty

I am fairly certain I don't hold the altitude record for Bn2s though.
