From left to right:
A radio tech whose name I forget.
Woman?
Frank Bendon, Radio Tech extrordinaire.
Ray Williams
Wally Pendray??? (back on)
Capt Heliodore Otmar Baron Von Tschuchnigg
From memory, the Chook cost ten cartons of SP and ten Talair overnight bags.
I think the operation failed when the Bongo Van turned, either damaging the main spar or twisting the fuselage on landing???
Too many years ago to remember the story.

P2-ISJ
Torres,
This was the return of P2-ISJ from Wamuna (NW of Madang). All went well until it got to the gap just NE of Goroka, and it started to swing. Army pilot jettisoned it : result, original minor damage was now a writeoff.
Regarding the "personalities" in the photo, I believe the ginger beer on the left is Phil Kaye. I doubt that the bloke in the long white socks is wally; he always stood up straight. that stance however, does look remarkably like C R Miles. I agree about the man in the red shirt.

HANOI!
Hanoi. March 17 eh?
A great day and a pity that PNG does not have a Patrick who could chase all the 'real' snakes out of the country.
“It is easy to be pleasant when life flows by like a song, but the man worth while is the one who will smile when everything goes dead wrong. For the test of the heart is trouble, and it always comes with years, and the smile that is worth the praises of earth is the smile that shines through the tears.” (a wee Oirish saying!)

Phil Kaye is correct. The one back on is not Shags Miles - he was in POM at that time. Besides, whoever it is his socks are up so it can't be Shags. I still suspect it was Wally.
The piston Porter came from the Catholic Mission, Wewak, exchanged for an overhauled C206 engine. Chewed up the two spare Queenair engines due to overheating. Junior had the idea to convert it to a PT6 - until he found out what it would cost!
Max Cowboy Boots never flew the C188 P2-SET, only the C185 P2-SEP with Sorrensen spray pack. We had an old ag guy, brilliant pilot, WWII Pathfinder Squadron Mosquito pilot, whose name I forget now, used to get vertigo and a nose bleed above 200 feet AGL!
P2-SET eventually came to grief at Roger's (??) airstrip near Galley Reach, west of POM.
I recall another incident with a new, ex factory Islander wing destined for a pranged Islander at Garaina I think. Came from the UK to Sydney on a QF 742 Combi, then to POM in a Combi, then under a helicopter from POM to Garaina (think Mal Smith was the pilot?) until, within sight of the strip, the wing "took off" under the chopper and the pilot had to release it. Last seen it was still sitting in the trees a few miles outside Garaina.

chimbu warrior,
If that photo was taken in 1979, it couldn't have possibly been an Army pilot on the poles - RAAF owned the chookies back then! Maybe that's why they had all their helicopters confiscated and given to the Army?

Lae 1979 - 1982
Hi all,
this is my first read of this thread, it brings back many memories of my time as an ATC in Nadzab and at Lae. Were any of the readers taxiing for departure off RWY 14 early one morning when a colourful Lae identity ditched his Baron on about a 1 mile final RWY 32? Is the Pacific Helicopter pilot that sprinted a mile to his chopper to conduct the rescue on line? What about the Talair Twotter pilot that took the grass, passing the line up of aircraft on the taxiway waiting for departure, then entered the runway sped down to the chopper apron, took the grass again and abandoned his startled pax to jump in the chopper and help with the rescue net? What about the COAIR pilot of Baron P2COE (Bronte Zadow?) that orbited the survivors and vectored the chopper to them.
Read a thread about PNG DC3 performances, I recall a Defence Force DC3 flying back and forth Lae to Finch to climb to max ceiling, I think he actually made it to FL240!
I remember the aforementioned colourful identity flying Porter SEA at dot feet up the main drag (no not the runway... the main access road!) of Nadzab airport and climbing! to fly close by the tower, waving at us dressed in a cargo boys uniform! We had a check controller up there that day.... we had to fizz him (225)!
Anyone remember COE throwing a prop blade on takeoff roll chopping the nose compartment and littering the runway with SP cans... many survived I remember wiping hydraulic fluid off one at the COAIR christmas party... I guess the beer was an insurance write off...

Hmmm, not a bad thing really!
Baron ditching
Hi Sabre.
That "colorful identity" is still about, living in Cairns and retired from flying but not from life. Was in good health at the Talair reunion in '05.
Further to that story, I believe that the Talair pilot who accompanied the Pacific Helicopters pilot to the ditching site decided to sieze the opportunity, and is rumoured to have said to Max "...I'll pull you in (to the helicopter) if I get a Bandeirante endorsement...". The reply allegedly was "..I've lost one of my boots; if you dive down and find it, you can have a Bandeirante endorsement.."
I think the boot is still at the bottom of the Huon Gulf.
Believe Bronte is now in Canberra "between opportunities".

Hey Chuckles... Check out the Posguria letters online.
A bit of Pixie bashing going on there. See Duk Duks response to a letter there. Got some interest in the 180, so it would be good to have a last fly around before it goes....on the other hand...........

The passenger was a ships pilot called Billy Moeder. Max had flown early to Madang to collect him for some urgent job. The shark story as told to me was more like this.
Billy was bleeding quite profusely from a bump on the head. Max saw the wound and being well aware of the possibility of sharks told Billy in no uncertain terms to keep his distance.
Max was indeed more concernd with his missing boot than anything else even after he was recovered from the water.

He Wasn't without cowboy boots for long though!
His new pieces of foot worn aviation safety equipment saved his lucky butt when he kicked out the windscreen of the burning Bandit at POM.... some feat! (pun intended sorry!)
