PNG Ples Bilong Tok Tok
Silly Old Git
Well its been 30 years since I LEFT !
What these gents have said above would be the good oil.
Small investment to go have a look around for yourself.
A mate of mine came up shortly after me.(1970)
He never made it to the highlands the sight of the Owen Stanleys viewed from the Wastegate beer-garden made him wet his pants
He fled and did well .

Further to my previous post re copies of the 'Balus' books;
The owner of the bookshop concerned has informed me that at present he is unable to obtain any copies of Volume 1 The Early Years. However there are a few copies of Volume 2 The Rise of Talair still to be had and he indicated that it may be possible to obtain one more copy of Volume 3 Wings of a Nation
Anyone interested please pm me.

Having just returned from there this very week, Unique is certainly one of the words I would use to discribe the place.
g'day guys,
Where would be a good starting point for going up there to have a look? (going up there early next year) Also, are there any dodgy operaters that i shouldn't bother about looking into?
Cheers

And, more to the point for me, anyone got any ideas on current conditions re female, white and single? Am I going to be raped/murdered if I go up there alone (or with another female pilot)? Have heard some horrible stories, especially from old timers. Any thoughts Woomera? Chimbu?
Appreciated!

cap71n. I assume you are the feminine of the species? If so I would suggest you seriously re-think any thought of living and working in Papua New Guinea. I lived and worked in Papua New Guinea for twenty two years and do not consider PNG today a suitable place for a white female to live and work.
Collectively, we reprobates and rejects who post to this thread have hundreds of years working in PNG (add another century if you also count Sharpie). Without a doubt we all know people who have died in PNG - and I'm not referring to our many wantoks lost in aircraft accidents.
And don't think for one minute the appropriate authorities will protect you!! In many cases they are the problem - not the solution!!
I'll defer to a majority opinion but I suspect most here will support my views.
Email your flying qualifications and experience to [email protected] and I'll send you any alternate flying suggestions I can think of. No promises ..... !!!
Woomera
Cap71n, for you and your family's sake can someone please inform her of the expat female pilot that was abducted, pack raped and murdered in Lae years ago??
There is a reason why employers prefer single white males, it is hard enough for them to have to make the call to next of kin in the event of a fatal accident let alone making the call to advise that their daughter was raped before she was murdered.
Do yourself and your family a favour and forget about PNG as a single white female.
I had a silverbelly (blonde, petite and attractive) from NZ visit me while I was there and she was looked at as though she was a piece of meat. Her security was a 24 hour consideration.
Troppo
I had that terrible Lae rape and murder of helicopter pilot Heather Mitchel in mind when I posted my response above.

Cap71n,
Sorry but don't even think about it...the days of single white females being able to fly in PNG are long gone.
Heather Mitchel was a friend of mine...a Pacific Helicopters pilot who was leaving PNG. When she advertised her car a couple of locals turned up and showed interest so she went with them while they test drove it...they took her up Hospital Hill, raped her and then cut her into pieces.
Another dear friend was a teacher in Goroka and was raped while house sitting a house in the Goroka Teachers College compound for friends. The haus meri (local house keeper) unlocked the escape hatch in the floor (most houses have escape hatches in case of fire so you can get out quickly without having to unlock the 'rape gates' that section the house into living area and 'secure' sleeping area) so her male wantok could get in. She awoke to find a local over her stabbing her with a screw driver...she got out from under him by firing a flare from a bedside flare gun (remember the revolver type we used to give our wives guys?) which hit him in the face. A few days later one of the security gaurds turns up to work with a burned face....when the police are called his wantoks (clansmen) tell the police if he is arrested they will return and rape every women in the place....so the police walked away and did nothing. Some little time later she started suffering a vaginal discharge which was diagnosed as Syphilis...she was an older lady and was celebate...she also had internal damage from having something like a wooden baton shoved up her...she had blocked all that out. A wonderfull friendly women who was just ruined mentally.
The American Peace Corps stopped sending females to PNG in 1995....which was a real shame..many of us went out with them...We laughed ourselves sick when they told us about the 'Talair Pilot brief' they recieved prior to leaving the US
They stopped sending girls because of the rape of one of their number in Hoskins.
Then there was the women who was car jacked in Moresby and caught up in her seatbelt as they drove away....she was dragged to her death.
I could go on about the 6 or 8 male friends who were shot dead, stabbed, axed etc....not all killed, a few were...but all carrying the scars for life.
Do you get the picture?

On a lighter note who can remember the big crate that was delivered to the tarmac in Lae on 1st of Oct 1973?
On the side was written
SELF GUVMIN
YU KEN OPIM EM LONG OCT 1
The locals were suitably amazed
Capt Hollywood why does that name ring a bell?

G'day,
I spent a few years flying in PNG until I recently left to pursue an airline job back in oz, so I can give you a bit of perspective as one of the younger generation to go through recently.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in PNG. I learnt heaps from some of the best in the business and wouldn't trade the experiences for the world.
However, if you want to fly in PNG do so because you want the experience (like I did) and not because anybody has told you that the airlines in Oz will be impressed with PNG time...they won’t be.
I understand that having PNG time was once highly regarded in the Oz airlines, but the HR people in airline recruiting these days don't know where PNG is let a lone what the flying is like. This lack of understanding on their behalf leads to their reluctance to hire PNG pilots and it leads to some bizarre misconceptions. Some of these misconceptions that I've met in interviews recently include;
Pilot's only fly in PNG because they're not good enough to fly in Australia.
Like anywhere, occasionally you'll come across a guy who is as dodgy as a bamboo watch, but mostly the opposite is true.
PNG pilots are cowboys because they fly through valleys and around big hills.
That's usually the best thing to do with big hills. We don’t have big hills in Oz so recruiters can't fathom mountains at well over 10,000 ft.
You can't legally fly IFR in PNG.
You can, around half of PNG has a LSALT of 10,000 or less. So you can even fly in IMC at times.
There is no controlled airspace in PNG, and there is definitely no radar airspace in PNG.
Yes there is and Moresby (Jackson's) does.
Multi-crew flying in PNG on Twin Otters, Bandits, etc isn't really proper multi-crew because all flying is VFR.
Firstly, not only are "proper" multi-crew procedures used, but there will be times when you'll be working your collective arses off. And you'll fly with people from all nationalities and with a diverse range of experiences. Secondly, flying IFR is easy. Visual flying, down valleys in marginal weather to what are sometimes one way strips, and then getting out and into the next one, etc can be some of the most demanding flying that you'll ever see.
One other thing. If you go there, get the experience you're after and leave whilst you still can. It's one of those places where time stopped and it's really easy to wake up one day and realize that you've been there for twenty years....and probably still having to listen to stories about bloody Tal air
.
Oh, and be prepared for the fact that nobody back home will believe any of your stories.
