I just got today assessment for the end of March. I am currently type rated 737max FO with 3000 hours.

I will be honest and applied for wide body as it was mentioned 777-787-747 FOs. But the whole picture I got from experiences and comments they can really put you wherever they want. That's also not nice that you cannot agree fleet before you come. I am considering to cancel assessment totally. I don't want to end up to 737max while I am thinking and expecting I applied for 777-787 I will get it.

As far as I know, the job advertisment is Type Rated Boeing First Officer. Nothing about 787/777 and especially not 747 as one of them is out of fleet and second one will be phased out in March. If you don't want to join QR, just don't go. It's simple. No need to write it here on Pprune.

Mate, It was very clear in the advertisement. It reads and I quote ”Type rated first Officer Boeing”. Meaning, any Boeing that meets the requirements.

The requirements read and I quote from their website;

Minimum 1000 hours total flight time on Multi-Crew, Multi-Engine, and Commercial Airline experience on a jet with MTOW of 30,000 kg or higher
• Minimum 500 hours total flight time on a B787 / B777 / B767 / B757 / B747-400 (400F/-8/-8F) / B737NG/MAX

It does not state anywhere which fleet you are applying to, it doesn’t state anywhere that if you are rated on the 777, for example, you will be given the 777 seat. This is a basic analysis, people are going with delusions, hearsay, not listening to fair advice or paying attention to what is written in the application.
The current shortage is on the MAX because it isn’t a great plane, short haul in the ME is awful, long days in the 737 flight deck, no crew rest, little to no night stops working to max hours, minimum rest etc.
.

Hey guys! I have a quick question about applying/getting updates on your application. I have applied 2 months ago but my status is still "Under Review". I'm not sure if this is normal, but when I go to "View Applications" I can see all my answers to their questions, but in the File Attachments area there seems to be no attachment, not even my CV. Would it be a good idea to withdraw my application and apply again? Or is it normal to be "Under Review" for so long? Thanks

Your opinion

Hi everyone,

I'm considering joining Qatar Airways as a First Officer. Currently, I'm flying for a low-cost airline in Europe on the 737.

Could you provide insights into the current situation at Qatar Airways following the CEO change?

1. Are rest periods still not included in your FTL and not compensated? What about deadheads? Are they compensated, and have there been any reductions in deadheads?
2. How are flight hours distributed across each fleet? What you can expect on 777/787/737
3. What's the cockpit atmosphere like? Is there still a fear culture?
4. Is there an annual pay increase, or is it not a practice? Are the figures on pjn valid?
5. Is the time for upgrading still long?

Would you recommend Qatar Airways, or would it be better to aim for a Dubai-based airline?

Thank you all, and have a great day!

1. Rest periods are counted as full flight pay, and they will soon be included in the FTL. Deadheading is full flight pay.
2. The widebody fleets are quite busy but there is plenty of variety, especially on the 777 with long cargo trips that give you plenty of time out of Doha. This is the best part of the job.
3. Cockpit atmosphere is good. We are all in the same boat and it’s generally a relaxed atmosphere on the Boeing. Fear culture isn’t what is widely advertised.
4. There is a step increment on your basic salary every year of 3%.
5. Upgrading time does seem to be on average 8-9 years, but things can change quite quickly and there have been times in the past when upgrades happened after only 4 years. Unlikely to see that again for a while.
Of the big 3 ME airlines, Qatar is narrowly the best paid, if you take in account getting the housing allowance. I see little difference between any of the Gulf countries, but that’s me having lived before in Dubai.
Good luck

Speedbird744, don't fool the newjoiners with housing allowance. Most likely they will not get it within the first 3-4 years. People who joined in late 2022 are still on the long list for a move out without any sign of improvement.
Best paid job in the Middle East? Did you count a profit-share / annual bonus? Apparently not.

Regarding the fleet, not even HR or Fleet Offices know. It's based on the current need at the time of joining. It can be anything. For First Officers there is a much bigger chance to get a widebody airplane than for Direct Entry Captains, as QR is mostly recruiting DEC on 737s. Btw, all of the captains who were forced to be moved from 787/777 on to 737 last year are moving back to their original fleet during this year, that is why QR is looking for 737 DECs again.
Regarding the upgrade time it is still 8y+ on any fleet. Regardless of your previous experience. If you are aiming for a captain seat soon then QR is not the place for you. Everything depends on how far from upgrade you are in your home airline.

If you still insist on coming to the Middle East as a First Officer, go for a few days and compare Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi by yourself. There is nothing better than a personal experience. From my personal point of view Dubai and UAE itself is more enjoyable place where to wait for your upgrade.

Fleet chnage is nothing you can do. A friend of mine joined as FO on A320 and less than 2 years later went to 350. If you re planning to join, try to enjoy life as a pilot living in Doha. Fear culture is more at Cabin crew side than us. Flight deck environment is good and I never had any problem so far. The Training department is way more bearable than EK. Bidding system works well for me and I can commute back home almost every month.

If coming here with high hope of quick upgrade or widebody fleet, you may end up disappointed. Yearly increment is not consistent, dont always expect that. Doha is not super fancy like Dubai but there is plenty to do nowaday. Night life is fun if you know the place (there are so many).

If the aim is money and experience, then you should be fine. Having my family stay back home, combining extra from housing with kids education (oversea), I earn and save more than many friends. You can be happy anywhere if you know what you are doing.

Thank you all for the response. I have two additional questions:
1. Could you please inform me if Qatar offers loss of license insurance?
2. As a First Officer with a family of three (including a baby and my wife), what can we anticipate in terms of housing? Will it be an apartment or something else? Is there a unified community akin to Emirates - Dubai's Medan South, or are accommodations more dispersed throughout Doha with uncertain outcomes?
3. Do pilots get some benefits, such as entry to private beaches, resorts, discounts at restaurants etc.? (Like a emirates platinum card)

Enjoy your day!

1. Loss of Licence Insurance was reintroduced recently again with a local insurance company, T&C apply, of course.
2. Expect an apartment, probably 2 or 3 bedroom. Only captains are eligible for villas. Quality of company accommodation varies and there is nothing you can do with that prior joining. Once you join, you may apply for a move out (takes years) or a change within company accommodations (T&C apply). Accommodation that is provided for newjoiners is generally acceptable, nowadays.
3. There is an app with a list of discounts that you are eligible for after showing your company ID.
