Life after BA

Losing and then looking for another job is grim under the best circumstances, add factors such as being a former employee that now has a reputation (in some eyes) as being intransigent and spoilt, add the transition to a strict Monday to Friday work schedule, which sounds great until you have to do it.

Add the fact that most jobs now are judged on performance and very aggressively in some employment sectors and you have a horror on your hands.

I don’t even begin to imagine what the commuters would do, move back I guess, unless you fancy seeking employment in Spain or Greece or wherever.

How many of the skills are transferable, really? Outside of the leisure, catering, customer services industries which sectors do you think have real parallels. Have you seen what hotels pay for staff, or shops, it’s horrible out there, it really is. Avoid having to deal with it is my advice.

Even if I thought this was an issue worth striking over, which I don’t, in the current climate I simply wouldn’t have the stones to do so – not right now. The risk is simply too high.

But each person has to decide for themselves based on their own situation and evaluation of the risks and act accordingly. I just get a bit bothered when I hear people being told, and then repeating to others, you can’t be sacked.

To VanHorck – You have a point, talk to people who worked in banks back in the early 90’s – they had discounted mortgages which meant they could never afford to leave their job, effectivly

Snas i would agree with you to some extent but don't forget many of our crew have degrees and have come in from diffrent backgrounds .I met a guy who was a lawyer a few weeks ago i also know of crew who have been teachers, dentists and doctors before joining BA .My original point was that some of our crew could move onwards and upwards if they left BA however some would end up in M&S.BA crew have it good i don't think BA is a bad employer those that are in dispute should take a long hard look and stay or go. If i was so unhappy in my employement i would be looking for alternatives. It comes back to walking the walk and from what i have seen they only talk the talk.

It will be pretty hard for a lawyer who has been working as BA CC for many years to return to his profession at a reasonable salary. Same for Doctors and Dentists.

BA is constantly dealing with this mentality - crew thinking the company owe them something - and not the other way around. BA should give, give and give but get nothing in return.

Forward bookings have gone down by 20% - well done Miss Malone!

At yesterday's meeting there were interesting questions asked about the legality of being sacked for withdrawing one's labour and what would happen to staff travel - BASSA's well thought out answer was - We're looking into it. Shouldn't they have looked into it earlier? How long does it take?

Mr. McCluskey was also talking about casualities as there cannot be a deal without them. I doubt Miss Malone - she did admit standing on the picket line in 1997 - or any of the other so called reps would be one of those casualities.

I had this link emailed to me - disgusting in my opinion.

Van Hork he had only been in the company for about three years.

Winston Smith i agree some crew think that BA work for them not the other way about. However this is BA's fault cabin crew are not performance mangaged enough. On line some CDS's /PSR's challenge shortfalls and some do not there should be more accountability especially regarding SEP.

If BASSA do not support the content in the video shouldn't they bring a law suit against the individual responsible? Oh maybe not their track record in court isn't that good is it .

You Tube clip

Viewing the clip brought me back down to earth with a bump! Call it what you will this was a reality check for me. This shows the mentality of what I hope and pray is a mindless tiny minority within BASSA. The sense of self importance by the creators comparing themselves with some of the terrible human tragedies of the 20th century is nothing short of disgusting.

This battle, for indeed that is what it is, is far from over. A stoppage I fear is still the likely outcome with indeed Mr McCluskey many innocent casualties on your side.

unfortunately not a joke

Unfortunately the video is not a joke! It was shown at the meeting and is also posted on CF with loads of comments regarding 'how touching and inspiring' it is!!!

I personally am totally disgusted and shocked that 'my colleagues' think this is an acceptable way of expressing themselves and are seriously convinced they can compare the current IR situation with apartheid, WW2, etc...... it is frightening really!!!

Oh what a can'o'worms - once you start looking about in You-Tube, there are vids of people posting their ballot back, literally, we watch the act of them placing the thing in the post box.

My winner in the YouTube BA stuff award has to go to this dude though: -

The video

USMC, Mandella (with Winnie!!), miners, SDAP, Martin Luther King, Tianenmen Square, kid on a coal bing - covered all the numbers
Yes, I initially thought it was a spoof made for WW.

Hope things didn't kick off in the front row of the union meeting

I'm not CC and if the consensus is that I should shut up I'll remove this.

I know that the IA isn't about pay (but does the BASSA membership), but if the above quote is in any way true, does it not just go to show how well BA CC are (over)paid in comparison to other airlines... if lawyers, doctors dentists and teachers leave their profession to become BA CC, it must mean something is attractive, and it ain't for the love of flying, 'cause being CC isn't flying...
