I'm not sure when the photo was taken, but the Mil helicopters were part of the peace-keeping force and not famine relief.

Looks like a construction factory - USA???

dook 19th Nov 2018 13:11

Mid to late fifties West Germany possibly.

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 13:21

It is in USA, not a construction factory, not 1950s

Edit to add; this is an auxiliary field. The other images I have are of the main field :ok:

dook 19th Nov 2018 13:57

That makes a difference, but it does look rather large for an auxiliary field.

Usually it is military establishments which have auxiliary fields but to me that doesn't look military.

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 15:25

Further investigation, it's one of three satellite fields built at the same time as the main field
  • this one doesn't exist any more
  • another still in use
  • the third is recognisable - but no longer active.
4th satellite built 3 years later.

The main base is still active.

There seem to be a fair number of auxiliary fields as well (from little know airfields) - but I have no pictures of these.

Was built before the US entered the war.

dook 19th Nov 2018 15:41

Can you please confirm military ?

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 16:07

Yes, definitely military.
Here's the dedication ceremony at the main airfield: (building still present)

Montana...…….?

kenparry 19th Nov 2018 16:43

Is your field a satellite of Randolph AFB?

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 17:10

Not in Montana, kenparry has the right state, wrong field.

dook 19th Nov 2018 18:12

Corpus Christi.

edit: that had six satellite airfields according to one source -

Rodd, Cabaniss, Cuddihy, Kingsville, Waldron and Chase.

I think this one might be Cuddihy.

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 19:11

Well done dook. Corpus Christie is the main field. You have control.

The image I posted first is/was Rodd Field. Check out Google Earth, and use the history to go back to 1956.

Map showing the three satellites in relation to the NAS - produced by the company that installed the power cables.
https://byzamw.db.files.1drv.com/y4m...&cropmode=none

Three initial satellites (Rodd, Cabaniss, Cuddihy) in 1940/1. My document is from this period.
Waldron & Chase were added a couple of years later in 1943.
Kingsville was in 1942, but not sure it was built as a satellite to CC - history

dook 19th Nov 2018 19:46

Block 1 Hurricanes.
111 Squadron, Northolt?

dook 19th Nov 2018 20:07

Well, I thought it might last a bit longer than 19 minutes. :{

New balls please

nvubu 19th Nov 2018 20:14

L1550 gave me a place to start searching. I think the record is 4 minutes.

Blimey, two in a day. Have to find another aerodrome now. Will be up shortly.

dook 19th Nov 2018 20:28

I knew I should have brushed the serial number. :ugh:
