Big B25 raid on Rabaul from Dobodura.

nvubu 27th Dec 2018 13:49

Here's the second runway being bombed

edit to add. Get away from Rabaul as it isn't there.

dook 27th Dec 2018 14:24

I've looked at Gasmata but can only see one runway.

nvubu 27th Dec 2018 14:32

It isn't Gasmata.
You will have to look very closely to see one runway. The other one has returned to bush - and to make it even harder it isn't where GE thinks it is :ok:

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 14:33

There were two runways at Cape Gloucester.

nvubu 27th Dec 2018 14:49

dook does all the hard work, and Jenkins jumps in with the answer.
Cape Gloucester it is. Here is the give away shot (this has been published elsewhere on the net, hence why I didn't post it.

You can still recognise the outline of the E/W runway and surrounds now, but I originally thought it was a bit daft that GE was showing the airport/airport symbols. Turns out that it still is an airfield with an IATA code of CGC, and according to airports-list.com has a 1079m runway! If you zoom in on GE, there is an aircraft on it, but I doubt it has a 1000+m runway any more.

Over to you Jenkins, and commiserations to dook.

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 14:54

Thanks. Some of my inspiration comes from Canberra, but I won't state exactly where. Really interesting search. Now for a joker, within which peaches may be involved. Haven't landed there, but it looks my sort of strip.https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....2c6819a8fe.jpg

India Four Two 27th Dec 2018 15:33

Northern France?

nvubu 27th Dec 2018 15:49

Are they dismantling aircraft/gliders there?

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 16:11

Not Northern France. Unsure of work in junk yard.

nvubu 27th Dec 2018 20:09

Somewhere in France?

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 20:16

Not in France.

India Four Two 27th Dec 2018 21:53

How about Denmark?

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 21:53

Some numbers which should ease the task. The field lies in the first, close by is that which begat 44. Goodnight to Europe, and perhaps good morning to those watching excellent cricket in Christchurch.

JENKINS 27th Dec 2018 21:54

We crossed, no to Hamlet and Elsinore.

India Four Two 27th Dec 2018 22:41

Interesting clues JENKINS. The chalky soil and the yellow road-centre lines had already led me to Kansas and your "begat 44" clue leads me to the Wichita area. I'm still working on "lies in the first".

Terry Dactil 27th Dec 2018 23:00

Somewhere in New Zealand?

Checklist Charlie 27th Dec 2018 23:19

Quickly harking back to Cape Gloucester,

If you zoom in on GE, there is an aircraft on it
I think you will find it is an overflying aircraft. A swept wing aircraft would have performance difficulties operating at what's left of the strip.

I did wonder that - but an extraordinary coincidence :ok:

Bowmore 28th Dec 2018 07:50

Jenkins is correct, I think. Jenkins Airport, Wyoming, Delaware. If correct, open house.
