It certainly is! I'm going to have a punt at Papeete... Just to keep things shuffling along.

dook 5th Nov 2018 19:35

Good try but you are a long way too east.

kcockayne 5th Nov 2018 20:13

Influenced by jensdad - & really without any meaningful clue - La Reunion ?

dook 5th Nov 2018 20:29

We're in the south Pacific and jensdad is about 2000 miles too far east.

Possibly Nadi (NFFN) looking slightly west of north, although the range in the right-hand background looks too low.

OH if correct.

dook 5th Nov 2018 21:08

It is indeed Nadi. :ok:

OH is requested.

Bit of history both aviation and family behind these. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....26dba48226.jpg

Is that aircraft an Avro 10 ?

It might be a Fokker, but the Southern Cross disappeared as did the Southern Cloud.

Bit too much `welly` from the Fordson Major guys......

Or with a hand-throttle, would that be too much "right-hand up a bit"?

dook 6th Nov 2018 10:51

It appears the OP lives in Melbourne, so I doubt there will be much light shed on this for a while.

I'm wondering if the family reference has anything to do with Charles Kingsford Smith.

dook 6th Nov 2018 15:10

This could be in Brisbane.

Anyone interested in an ANA Avro at Eagle Farm airfield ?

An ANA Avro came to grief at Eagle Farm in 1930
There were no surfaced runways at that time and
after heavy rain, the landing surface was very unsafe

The Southern Cross disappeared? The Fokker F.VIIb/3m Southern Cross is now preserved in a special glass hangar memorial on Airport Drive, near the international terminal at Brisbane Airport. The Lady Southern Cross, a Lockheed Altair, disappeared in 1935.

Apologies - a mis-read.

Dook (#9517),

Very interested, particularly as to the source of the picture on the web page as I thought we had the only copy of the original hanging on the wall in Port Melbourne.

It is indeed Eagle Farm and the aircraft is the Southern Cloud.

My partner's grandfather was one of the team from the Ford Company involved in the "recovery" and many years later his son (Robert) used his skill as an artisan craftsman woodworker to build the wings used in Kidman's reconstruction. Some years ago I saw a "spare" wind at the HARS facility near Woolongong.

Two reference notes on the 1928 or 1930 (depending which version of history you chose to accept) to follow..

That took some finding - good job I'm retired !

Now you have a better quality picture of the Southern Cloud.

Short Sunderland!
my favorite Airfix model kit!
Also saw one of the few (only?) remaining in a museum in Florida.
But this is clearly a real one in flying condition and longer ago!
Will take some searching!
