Last wild guess - Lyon-Bron. Its the only other French destination shown on the Croydon timetable of 1931. Otherwise completely flummoxed. OH if correct. LFH

sabredog 2nd Nov 2011 07:53

Not Lyon-Bron,LordFlashheart. This was a military (Training) airfield with a small a civilian aeroclub.Opened in 1911 and still extant in 1962. No connection with Croydon. Exact photograph is on the web.

SilentHandover 2nd Nov 2011 20:37

Airfield Saran (Aérodrome de Saran, also known as Aérodrome de Orleans-Saran or Saran Army Air Field)

OH if correct as off to work for the night.

sabredog 2nd Nov 2011 20:48

Well done,SilentHandover.
It is indeed Orleans-Sagan airfield.

"Silent Handovers" were always the best sort! Have a good night duty.
Open House is declared by SH.

Appreciate your efforts, Mel

Duckbutt 5th Nov 2011 14:59

This airfield has been rendered obsolete by another one built to the south west.

Soddit 5th Nov 2011 18:39

How about Pearls,Grenada W.I.?

Duckbutt 5th Nov 2011 23:55

Pearls, Grenada it is Soddit. Over to you.

finncapt 6th Nov 2011 08:02

Duckbutt

We used in the early 90's on the, Caledonian (not Bcal) DC10, to have a week standover in Grenada.

I remember visiting a small airfield, much like the one in your challenge, on which was "parked" an AN2 which had arrived some years (possibly more than 10) earlier with some Cuban? troops.

I believe Castro was attempting to support a revolution in Grenada but that it fizzled out with the arrival of the Americans shortly after.

Your challenge reminded me of that day and crawling around the AN2 which was in surprisingly good condition.

I wonder if it is the same airfield?

Soddit 6th Nov 2011 10:11

Many thanks. So long since I got one I've forgotten how to post the next challenge. This may need more than one edit. Finncapt - indeed there WAS a "revolution" by the marxist government of Maurice Bishop.

Surprisingly I cannot find this on the list. It should not tax the assembled experts.

Duckbutt 6th Nov 2011 10:53

Yes that would almost certainly be the place, Finncapt. The AN2 together with an AN24 were left stranded there in 1983 when the USMC used Pearl's as a staging post during the 1983 invasion. Pics of both these aircraft in a servicable condition at the time of the invasion can be found at:

TogetherWeServed - Cpl William Thompson IV

They remain to this day but to say the least, they are somewhat more 'shop soiled' now, 2007 pics at:

Thanks for those links.

Pearls Airport AN-2

Interesting that the "Cuban" AN-2 is in Aeroflot markings.

finncapt 7th Nov 2011 14:22

Yes, I thought that, but I seem to remember it was definitely the Cubans who invaded.

I expect google has the answers somewhere.

I wonder what the markings on the AN24 are/were.

If it was an Aeroflot crew, I hope they got a long range premium payment and a decent layover!!!!

Duckbutt 7th Nov 2011 16:28

Finncapt, the only pic I could find of the AN26 (other sources call it an AN24) in decent condition is this one. Not a good angle but will give you an indication of the livery:

A better shot of the tail (behind the AN2) can be seen in India Four Two's pic above.

Father Dick Byrne 7th Nov 2011 18:32

Lest we forget the present challenge, might I ask Soddit whether the airport in question is in fact within 30 degrees of longitude west of Suez..?

Soddit 8th Nov 2011 00:29

Not wishing to interrupt the Pearls discussion .....the airport in question is east of Suez by a fair step. The picture is from 1994 when the runway was being resurfaced.

India Four Two 8th Nov 2011 02:33

Australia?

Soddit 8th Nov 2011 06:19

Much too far east....I had rather expected that you would get this very quickly. This airport serves a place which has undergone a change of identity since the picture was taken..

Soddit 9th Nov 2011 08:29

Time for another clue...there is a close local connection with early Christianity.

jindabyne 9th Nov 2011 09:11

Madras - now Chennai. Your last clue (Mylapore) did it!

Soddit 9th Nov 2011 11:32

Chennai indeed,Jindabyne. Over to you....

jindabyne 9th Nov 2011 11:43

OK, here goes -----

A clue then - on an island, East of Suez

chevvron 10th Nov 2011 14:58

Doh all right then I'll bite; Grande Baie Mauritius. (I know it's not really 'cos Grand Baie wasn't paved)

jindabyne 10th Nov 2011 15:19

Sorry Chevvy - go East - to a group of islands.

chevvron 11th Nov 2011 10:28

Phillipines; Marshalls?

jindabyne 11th Nov 2011 16:56

Not Marshalls :)

chevvron 11th Nov 2011 17:00

Phillipines then - someone help, I know nothing about this bit of the world!!

jindabyne 11th Nov 2011 17:51

The Philippines then ------
