Where they drive on the left, possibly Malaysia..?

RichieD 3rd Oct 2011 14:05

Chiang Mai International Airport, Thailand ?

Corsairoz 3rd Oct 2011 14:18

Not Malaysia, and not Chiang Mai.

I flew into here for a holiday en route to 'somewhere distant' in the 1980's.

Today I wouldn't need to do it, as 'somewhere distant' has an airport itself now.

RegDep 3rd Oct 2011 14:38

Surat Thani, Thailand

Corsairoz 3rd Oct 2011 14:50

RegDep has it.

Surat Thani Airport, Thailand.

I was travelling from Bangkok to Samui Island. A rattly 30 minute bus ride from Surat Thani Airport then a 2 1/2 hour, cockroach infested, ferry crossing has now been replaced by direct flights from Bangkok into the new Samui Island Airport.

Slower, but much more fun back in those days :)

Here is the unadulterated picture.

Cheers, Corsairoz

sycamore 4th Oct 2011 18:56

Luang Prabang..?

India Four Two 5th Oct 2011 00:37

Not Luang Prabang but right country.

sycamore 5th Oct 2011 10:28

Long Cheng,or LS20A, HQ of Gen Vang Pao..

India Four Two 5th Oct 2011 15:36

Yes, LS20A, Long Cheng or Long Tieng. One of the secret "non-existent" Air America airstrips.

Land on 32, takeoff 14 only - the 14 approach had a significant obstruction! :

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...LongTieng2.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3.../LongTieng.jpg

I had never heard of Long Tieng until I recently read Flying Through Midnight: by John T. Halliday, in which this airstrip figures prominently. An excellent book, thoroughly recommended.

Some very good photos of Long Tieng, NKP and operations in Laos here:
