nvubu 25th Jan 2012 19:18

Time for a clue:

This air complex consisted both of a water and a land drome. Here is the land side a few years later.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...e/011B1926.jpg

The water drome no longer exists, but the land aerodrome does and is still active.

Although this location isn't in the UK, there is a British (non Empire) connection linked to the first picture.

Hope these help.

Lordflasheart 26th Jan 2012 08:25

Is it connected to one of those altruistic military interferences entered upon by the brits around the end of WWI ? "North Russia" perhaps ? LFH

sabredog 26th Jan 2012 08:26

Kasumigaura Naval Air Station

nvubu 26th Jan 2012 12:03

Kasumigaura Naval Air Station it is - sabredog has it.

The British connection was the British Air Mission in 1922 - the lakeshore drome was in the process of still being built as can be seen in the 1st image.

This is a later image - a complete change. The "road" on the left leads to the land aerodrome.

Complete guess, Woodford?

albatross 27th Jan 2012 08:20

Nope - kind of a strange one all those lancs are a little misleading but they are either "going to or coming back from" not sure which. I hope that is a vague enough clue.

sabredog 27th Jan 2012 08:32

Victory Aircraft Company (Avro Canada),Malton Airport,Ont ?

albatross 27th Jan 2012 08:56

Well you're on the right side of the ocean!:ok:

Krakatoa 27th Jan 2012 09:03

Would it be in Alberta

albatross 27th Jan 2012 13:38

East of Ontario.

Lordflasheart 27th Jan 2012 15:23

Could be Dorval ? OH if correct. LFH

albatross 27th Jan 2012 16:01

continue further east but it is not on an island.

sabredog 27th Jan 2012 16:35

RCAF STATION PENNFIELD RIDGE,NS?

evansb 27th Jan 2012 16:45

Greenwood, Nova Scotia ? And if correct, are the Lancasters for Tiger Force ?

albatross 28th Jan 2012 02:42

Not Greenwood but you are getting closer.
Not sure if they are for "Tiger Force" but that would be my guess also.

asw28-866 28th Jan 2012 05:34

Thought I had one, but no good! Still looking...try this one, bit of a long shot as the hangar layout does not look right, RCAF Dartmouth NS? Nice challenge, I knew nothing of "Tiger Force" until now.

Krakatoa 28th Jan 2012 06:50

Not sure if this ties in with the geographical clues, RCAF Lachine, Quebec.

albatross 28th Jan 2012 06:50

Yer close but in the wrong province.

TheChitterneFlyer 28th Jan 2012 07:55

Ottawa, Uplands?

nvubu 28th Jan 2012 08:02

Montreal St Hubert?

albatross 28th Jan 2012 08:13

Wrong provinces guys
Evansp and Sabredog were closest when the went swanning around in Nova Scotia but still in the wrong province.
Previous clue not an island should help too.

TheChitterneFlyer 28th Jan 2012 08:24

Chatham, New Brunswick?

nvubu 28th Jan 2012 08:25

RCAF Goose Bay

albatross 28th Jan 2012 08:42

You can still see the Airport on Google earth.

nvubu 28th Jan 2012 09:26

Thanks, that was a good hunt, not sure how many airfields in Cananda I've looked at this morning - although I was mislead by the "not on an island" clue. Thought this lead to not on Cape Breton so in Nova Scotia or not on Newfoundland so in Labrador. :)

The view on Bing is a much clearer image, and I've just found that website which states "but of the original seven hangars, only two remain, extensively renovated for industrial use" - they all look like they are still there

OK here's my next aerodrome - surprised that this was not on the list. Photos from 2 different years.

Re RCAF Scoudouc
Yeah - i was waiting for someone to guess Goose Bay AKA Booze Gay.
Hard to give clues that narrow the search but don't give the game away.
A friend sent me the photo and I immediately thought of this thread.
A little research was needed as I originally thought this was a photo of the Moncton airport itself.
Learn something new every day.
Well done.

olympus 28th Jan 2012 12:56

Is it Croydon?

nvubu 28th Jan 2012 13:46

albatross - I'm learning that about clues, aerodromes I though would last a while, the first clue and they're gone. I guessed Goose Bay - not because it had any similarity to your picture, but because it was the only RCAF base in Labrador.

Although sometimes I guess the clue in the picture is too easy - as for the ones of Croydon which olympus has got first time. The first photo is from the airshow in 1980, the second from 1988.

merlinxx 28th Jan 2012 14:43

I'll go with Olympus Croydon afore the cooling towers came down

olympus 28th Jan 2012 18:12

Haven't anything at the moment, so Open House.

Here is the next mystery aerodrome:

olympus 29th Jan 2012 12:41

I think this is the Embraer factory airfield which is reputed to have the world's fourth longest runway although I can't imagine why.

(Embraer Unidade Gavião Peixoto Airport ICAO: SBGP)

Click here for Wikipedia's 'Longest Runways' page

nvubu 29th Jan 2012 13:27

I think you are right ...

albatross 29th Jan 2012 13:37

We enjoy this thread so much being history buffs it might be fun is the person posting the photo posted some links with the airfield history after someone has found the airfield in question no mandatory but interesting if possible.
I know for some of the places in the outback this is not possible.

nvubu 29th Jan 2012 13:52

I'll second that.

I spend some time researching the aerodromes I post, and try to add some of the facts I've discovered when the aerodrome is revealed (usually far too early - before I've exahusted my clues :{).

I'm please to see that someone else likes to see additional information as well.

evansb 29th Jan 2012 14:06

olympus is spot on:ok: It is the Embraer test airfield in Brazil. Well done.:D Your turn.
