The airline said yesterday the planned overtime ban meant it could not risk running short-staffed and had left it with no alternative but to cancel all leave for licensed engineers from January 14.The Australian, Steve Creedy 28/12/07
The QE business plan starts to be laid bare for all to see.

Without O/T it can't afford to let any of it's LAME staff have any leave. Is that any way to run a sustainable engineering business, DC? Is it a legal way to operate, having a total, open-ended ban on any leave for a particular group of employees?

Why were you entitled to a 50% pay rise, DC? Was it because you kept your LAME's pay rise to zero for the past year?

I'm sure you realise that the pilots can't 'walk out' or 'work to rule' with you but I am convinced that:
- when/if you explain the specific problem/unserviceability on any given day, and
- explain the requirement for paperwork/tools/work packages etc, and
- professionally (as usual) and meticulously take the required steps to..
- apply that MEL or get the EA/AMM/PPM/LAP....
then you will have UNANIMOUS backing of all pilots in these trying times.

I wish I could cut and paste this first post into a notice but unfortunately the big Q would use it in some sort of AIRC hearing. Please all I would like your help by printing this thread out and throwing around smoko room tables.

Can we pls gauge how effective our actions are with somebody posting the amount of hold items on each aircraft as they stand today and we will recheck in one months time?

Can we all pls use this thread to post waqys we can work to rule to make our actions count. My input is the example of an annunciator lamp out in overhead panels.

Pls put all lamp changes in tech log. Walk off aircraft and try and find a computer and printer that work. Look up MM ref and print out. If printer doesn't work, find one that does. Order 387 globe and wait for storeman to deliver with release note. Change lamp, hope the holder doesn't crumble in your hand as I am sure many will, and certify. Do lamp test and find another one out. Start at step one again.

Good luck guys.

Get off the web with this what we are or are not going to do. That belongs in private (underground).

The work to rule stuff is fine to post. They will never know the ALAEAs next move though. Ladies and Gents get ready for instructions at any time of any day and follow your Reps.

Don't worry

Now that Peter S has canceled all leave, there won't be (too) much of a need for overtime .

All we have to do is rock up to work and do our jobs properly.......

No justification for QF to bring in the strikebreakers, and every morning make sure your base leaves one or two aircraft in the hangar or on the fence .......

Bit of a bummer getting the leave canceled, but take it, don't stoop to their levels .......

" SpannerTwister "

mmmmmmm.........very close to infringing on my name there my friend!!

Oh well, if we twist them or turn them, we sure as hell will be doing it to the highest of highest standards in accordeance with all procedures and manuals (as we always do). Don't forget the policy regarding the accounting of all "spanners and tools/equipment" at the completion of each and evry job. The policy explicitely states that if all tooling isn't accounted for then no aircraft shall be returned to service until the complete risk assessment procedure has been carried out. Would be a shame if one of your twisted spanners went missing wouldn't it? Could be painful for those late night departures out of Syd if the curfew was missed!

Safety before schedule

Well I for one could not in all conscience enter a cargo hold by any other means than the correct stand to do my inspection A check or transit. Remember if you haven't got the correct stand, then you can not do the job. If you have to go and hunt for it, well then there is a works order for that very purpose.

Angry Get in the trench beside me and hold firm.

Hello all, long time reader first time writer. It is very sobering to see so much passion from my fellow engineers, If we had this kind of fight at the last EBA, we may now be hitting these excrements for 10%.
I am serving time in Heavy Maintenence for being part of a collapsed airline several years ago. I cannot for one second understand why after 29 years, working in all facets of the industry and a holder of 13 licences of which 2 Aiframes and 2 engines are QF types that I am still only considered by QF to be of grade 4 worth.

I also struggle with the fact that some where back before I arrived on the scene that some mental giant bargained off "indexation" adjustments to wages, which are calculated and figured in every April and September. This was designed to keep wages in line with inflation and the 3% would then truley be a payrise, be it ever so meager

One more thing, I am sick of hearing these manager c%&ts tell me that this is a good deal and that because some other unions signed up that we should too. Also don't insult me and my brothers with talk of Superannuation carrots, it is not even negotiable as it it compulsory to pay it. As far as I am concerned I would like to take up a collection and get some of my Italian relo's to take DC and company out back and show them the finer points of concreting and swimming.

Extremely pissed off

Just got an sms from Paul Cousins.

Gday All, for those who are not aware I am the Federal President of the Licensed Aircraft Engineers Union (ALAEA) and I send this text to inform my friends of the exact nature of our public dispute with Qantas. We are seeking a 5% pay rise but most importantly we are trying to stop the degradation of our profession and our jobs going overseas. Qantas execs received up to 78% real time earnings increase, we ask for 5% and we are greedy (cpi = 3.5%)We have given efficiencies to match overseas but CEO Geoff Dixon refuses to give us the 'promised' agreement to keep jobs in Australia. We, pilots, flight attendants, cleaners, check in staff etc have created QANTAS' reputation as the world's Safest airline but Qantas management believe only they are entitled to increased monies and privileges. These are the same execs who sought to Sell Qantas (at excessive profits to themselves - almost a billion dollars worth) whilst undervaluing the company by 40%They now have canceled Engineers annual leave (even though they are owed over 250 YEARS worth) and are restricting people access to bereavement and long service leave. THIS IS WHY WE ARE STANDING UP AND SAYING ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Industrial action may begin 9th Jan and continue indefinitely, we deliberately avoided XMAS and News years so the public understand this is about JUSTICE and FAIRNESS not a deliberate gouge for excessive money. QANTAS and Kevin Brown have deliberately portrayed us as money hungry and self serving, NOTHING could be further from the truth. Next time you board an aircraft think of ALL the people involved to get that aircraft safely from A to B, next you cosy up in bed from 11pm to 6am remember an engineer is awake making sure your aircraft is safe to fly and please understand why we must make a Stand once and for all. This is not about money it is about RESPECT and RECOGNITION. Thank you for your time and wishing you well for the new year. Paul Cousins.
Nicely put Paul.
