please tell thsese guys, there are 20 year old first officers who went through the ab initio program, who drive a subaru, get deducted 133k, the place they can afford living is nyayo estate, some miss flights coz they were buying girls alcohol in westlands, third week of the month, they borrow money for fuel to go to work. i know two friends like that. this makes me wanna just beat them up, 100k net for a pilots lifestyle is peanuts. i passed kcse from nairobi school in 2004, was desperate to become a pilot so much that i wanted to sell my kidney at 19 coz my parents were a primary school teacher n mum a village church pastor earning net 15ooo a month and we were 7 kids total. i decided to go to the USA To hustle, i did all odd jobs, even wiping peoples asses, to raise money to study for a bachelors degree in aviation there. in 2009, one of the presidential candidates visited my mums church while campaining and my mum told him about me, he hooked me up with the ab initio thing, but i refused to abandon hustling two odd jobs and giving up my degree to go for the ab initio. i have no regrets, though it took me 9 years of my life to earn my degree and cpl ir, the salary would enable me take a loan to buy a cessna 172 take it to wilson in 5 years i wouldnt even need to fly kq . i can buy my parents a house, educate my siblings, and i wouldnt do that with the ab initio salary ...

bonibones

so what are we supposed to do?
Ditch this thing and persue other fields?what if we dont have other alternative ways to land us back to aviation like you did!

nimekaza yangu yote hoping that i will be invited for the psychomotor est, God pliz help. am so anxious to go to SA, not because of coming back to earn a lot of money but because i have always had the passion to be a pilot. it doesnt matter how much they will be paying me, as long as its a reasonable amount i will be comfortable with it. having the cockpit as your office i think is the sexiest thing, i dont mind earning 100k as my salary as long as am flying, but one thing am sure with is that KQ has annual salary increament for pilots, so by the time i finish repaying my loan which is after 8 years, i will be earning close to 600k!!!!! how about that?

Captain Ben
3rd Dec 2012, 10:37
Guys don't lose your focus.Get your facts right!First of all 100k is not an ab initio trainees salary it at least 3 fold that figure.133k is what is deducted monthly to service the loan.If you wanna be on Forbes then this is the wrong profession! not because it doesn't pay but your not doing it out of passion.UA405 isn't against the program as a whole,he only feels it's not financially viable on the part of the trainee because it becomes a huge inconvenience during ones fo years as he/she has to part with large sums of money to service the loan.Furthermore, the type rating bond(737 or embraer)puts you in a more precarious position. The fact that a couple of disgruntled elements can't keep their finances in check (who also clearly can't handle the huge responsibility of airline service)shouldn't deter anyone from pursuing their dreams.

3rd Dec 2012, 18:59
nairobi is a very expensive town. do the maths
net salary 100000
minus car note, 30000
fuel 20000
rent 20000 to 30000 (nyayo estate cheapest) as a pilot u cant live in a one bedroom, your small siblings need to come and sleep over sometimes
nairobi girls minus 10000
food, water, misc bills 20000
net salary 000000000000

futurekenyanpilot
3rd Dec 2012, 19:07
when you come back negotiate with coop bank, get a personal loan from any bank to pay off coop banks debt. say your training cost 5 million plus 2 million embraer or 737 simulator , get a personal loan of 7 million and pay off this debt. they might charge u an early termination fee of like 2 percent. a loan of 7 million u will be deducted about 150000 for 60 months only. with kenya airways paying u say 300000 a month, u will comfortable pay that in 60 months. instead of paying 133000 times 96 months which is 13million plus 2 million for the rating bonding 15 million. in those eight years the extra 15 minus 7 million u paid kq u can buy a 172 take it to wilson to instruct students.

Hello guys! A big 'THANK YOU' to all of you who are sharing facts on the forum, especially regarding the 'inside story' of the Ab Initio programme. Keep the advice coming.

darkroomsource
4th Dec 2012, 07:12
By the way,
any time a bank wants to charge you for paying off a loan before it's due, tell them that you will just stop making payments and they can 'foreclose' on the loan.
Whenever a loan is 'called' or 'foreclosed' they can be paid off with no penalties.

So, if they tell you that you have to pay a fee to close it out early, just tell them they can go through all the cost and expense of filing court papers, and you will just pay it off without the fee, or they can waive the fee this one time and you will just pay it off without the fee.

4th Dec 2012, 18:42
I'm guessing you've got the doc showing you what to expect. There is the one with boxes of different colors that keep shifting. Take note that they will all be dissappearing randomly so just keep your cool. I'm guessing you've realized by now that the key here is keeping calm: all steps are simple they just need you to relax because you could easily ace them any day. There is the last one of flying a model plane through a train of shifting boxes. Just stay calm. In all the first 4 tests you'll be given test rounds but not in this one. So just be cool. Remember flying is your passion so just handle that joystick like a pro: if you ask me its exactly like playing a video game. You'll make it: praying for you!:ok:

wannabe aviator
4th Dec 2012, 18:43
thanks for the compliment. I'm humbled. Am always here to help if anybody needs any info. all you have to do is ask. All the best. One more thing make sure you learn from your mistake. This is all about psychomotor learning. make sure you get constantly improving scores like 1-2-4 or 1-1-2 .....

Delt
4th Dec 2012, 20:02
Guys Congrats for reaching this far, you've almost made it. All i can advice is this be calm when you handle that joystick on the trax test. If you get a 1 no worries, try harder the next round and I'm sure you'll get a higher score. All the best!:ok:

For those who have not gone for the psychomotor, i wish you all the best. The test is not so hard, you just have to be relaxed, tense free and ensure that you really concentrate. It will take roughly 1 hr. As you do the test, concentrate on your work, dont look at your neighbors work coz u might end up losing concentration. All the best

Geokumu
7th Dec 2012, 03:23
Whoever has got the information, how many of us went for the aptitude and how many reached the psychomotor stage?

Rollyboy
7th Dec 2012, 06:52
I hear there's only 2 groups on Monday? If so then, thats around 50 guys for the Psychomotor. If they need 25 guys then everyones chances are 50-50!! We started out as 130 guys I think.

don_quixote
7th Dec 2012, 10:41
@Rollyboy, I thought each group had 8 participants. On Wednesday we had 5 groups and the guard said we were 40. How many groups went on Thursday and Friday?

Rollyboy
7th Dec 2012, 11:34
There were no groups for Thursday and Friday to the best of my knowledge.

Magnate
7th Dec 2012, 17:19
they only need 25?

farmwe
8th Dec 2012, 07:30
I did the interviews in March but didn't continue to medicals.I remember having an increasing score in psychomotor, honestly I don't know how they choose the people because I was hoping I would qualify.
are there any girls this time round?

Rollyboy
8th Dec 2012, 08:42
@Farmwe Yeah there's a couple of girls. I counted at least 5 at my Psychometric session. What were your scores?

Geokumu
9th Dec 2012, 03:26
Rollyboy sorry to say this but am not sure if this is a perfect place to discuss score and you simply understand the reason why.So how many of us went for the psychomotor

9th Dec 2012, 04:37

Yep. I received the mail last night around 10.

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:14
i tried my best through all the other stages, but finally i get eliminated, this was my last chance as am right now 23 years, so my dreams of being a pilot have been thwarted. for those who qualified for the medicals, i wish you the best. its not the end of the road for me, i feel so bitter, but i just have to accept the fact that i failed the pyschomotor. i feel so bitter that i failed the last critical stage but i wont blame myself, i still have a life to live.

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:15
all the best in the medicals, i think i neva made it after the psychomotor. success

9th Dec 2012, 08:18
How do you know you failed? Your status on the portal is marked as terminated?

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:25
i dont remember the login details i used on my portal, but so far there is one guy that told me he has also been invited for the interview

don_quixote
9th Dec 2012, 08:27
For the portal, you can use the 'forgot my password' facility to get a new password. When did you do the pilapt?

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:31
i went for the pilapt on wednesday, what about you?

don_quixote
9th Dec 2012, 08:35
Ditto. I'd suggest you try logging in first or call them. It wouldn't be the first time that they've delayed responses. Don't write yourself off too soon.
Cheers

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:38
my application still reads active, once a person fails his portal is terminated?

don_quixote
9th Dec 2012, 08:40
From previous posts, yes it does. So try and be patient. You're not out yet.

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:43
thanks for the consolation though something tells me am out, i did so poorly with the joystick, the first one 3,4,3 then the second one 2,3,3 so me i just lost hope. U also went for the test on Wednesday?

don_quixote
9th Dec 2012, 08:47
Yes I did. The 3:00 PM group

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 08:49
and were your scores as poor as mine?

don_quixote
9th Dec 2012, 08:57
The first one I had 1-3-6, then in the shapes and colors one I had 10 hits 3 misses on the first attempt then 11 hits 0 misses in the second one. The flying through boxes I had 1-2-2.

Wikasina
9th Dec 2012, 09:01
Anyone here from the pilapt ya 1:30PM Wednesday?

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 09:04
all the best brother, even though my account still reads active, i think if you have not been contacted so far, then it means the end of the road, not unless a miracle happens. success

Evroza
9th Dec 2012, 11:51
Just chill. Till your account reads terminated you are still in. I remember waiting to be called for the medicals when others had already gone. We waited for over a week. Infact I remember by the time I was starting to get worried like you are guys had already done their Medicals. Pray and just chill

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 12:45
Thanks for your consolation, at least am a bit relieved . Thanks for demonstrating that patience is key, my fingers crossed and praying hard. Thanks, so evroza are u already in s.a?

9th Dec 2012, 13:44
Not really. I failed the medicals

BOLT KIPCHUMBA
9th Dec 2012, 15:33

So they @Don they contacted you on a saturday, who else got an invite already?

Wikasina
10th Dec 2012, 11:13
I think if you're really 24 already most probably that's why you weren't alerted cause of the age bracket or you didn't meet the minimum requirements!

Wikasina
10th Dec 2012, 11:16
hi...when you fail to pass the interview do they write "Terminated" or "To terminate"? or its basically one and the same thing?

Evroza
10th Dec 2012, 13:36
Nyongesan, thanks but you might want to use proper English on this forum. @Wika* I think it's one and the same thing. If it starts with the letter 'T' it really won't change to 'Active'; sorry. Mine was never terminated, I'm thinking they believe I'll still be going back...if only I could! In other news, I'm currently designing an ultralight. Hopefully it will be the first from Kenya to Actually fly! And in case you are wondering, I won't be putting some 600lbs engine upfront!:ok:

urewawpilot
10th Dec 2012, 14:36
who knows wether or not KNEC sent confirmation of results as lack of it may hinder one to get response from KQ

nyongesan
10th Dec 2012, 15:55
@wikasina, you mean once you are 24 years, then that's it?

nyongesan
10th Dec 2012, 15:58
I meant to ask, what tests do they do?

Wikasina
10th Dec 2012, 16:43
@urewawpilot if you told knec to send via post it may take a long while...when did you do so?...
@nyongesan Kinda cause they have an age bracket of 18-24...

Magnate
10th Dec 2012, 19:31
We did the Psycho today. The joystick was damn too sensitive. Hoping for the best.
The guy told us that they will forward the results to KQ tomorrow, so our group should anticipate the emails around the end of the week.

For those who have already proceeded to the medicals, congrats.-please do share what happens there. Maybe one time we can collect all this information on this page, structure it and put it in one document for the sake of those who may wish to pursue this process like we've done. One is more confident when they have a rough idea of what to expect.

As for me, the psycho shook me up-but am still hopeful and trusting for the best

Hi there,so how long does the whole interview process take for one to be given the loan and head to SA?

13th Dec 2012, 04:55
@kibz like the post got me laughing.
@gwabbz yes a drug test is conducted. they take 4 blood samples, urine and stool so if anybody has been smoking weed or other drugs you got to pray for a miracle.

it can take days or even weeks for some bad air to exit the blood stream

kibz2005
13th Dec 2012, 16:30
Water only works for clearing 'bad air' on a urine test. With a blood test you'd best hope for a miracle. Call me crazy, but I find it much easier to just keep myself healthy and in no doubt of passing my yearly medical. but then again it's just me, what do I know? :E

Gwabbz
13th Dec 2012, 16:51
But THC is detectable in the blood
for a short time, usually a few
hours, because it is rapidly
metabolized into molecules known
as metabolites. At least 80 different
metabolites are formed from THC.
These metabolites are stored in
body fat and are gradually
eliminated from the body through
feces and urine.
ps: i took that stuff a long time ago! i dont use. I hope one slip up wont mess my dream!

Evroza
13th Dec 2012, 18:10
@Gwabbs incase you get nabbed with some 'bad air' traces, the worst that might happen is you get told to wait for 3 months then test again: and this time you better stay clean or you are out! However, on the forms you'll fill asking about your history, don't tell half truths: you could end up in a bigger hole. Just fill in you took it once....
edit: okay that sounded better in my head:}

Relax. Ni kama KNEC haijasubmit information kwa KQ. Furthermore, there are some guys doing the Psycho today so most probably you will be in the same group for the medicals.
But you can still ask if there is someone who has been invited for the Medicals without the certificate/result confirmation.

Bravo to all of you guys for making this far.
Now onto other matters, you will get seriously bored once you get to this place be it 43 or Progress. So you guys need to sort yourselves out in terms of entertainment n stuff. We will appreciate movies, series and games alot. Infact we will appreciate anyone who will come with a 1TB dedicated external hard disk full of the same. I know all of those who did the medicals are in but it will be in order to still wish you all the best of luck. For those who didn't make it, no regrets. Life goes on. Cheers.

don_quixote
18th Dec 2012, 13:03
It would be unfortunate if someone starts accumulating 1 TB of multimedia then get's disqualified in the remaining two stages :-(
If I make it past the orals then feel free to PM me your requests and I'll be sure to bring them with me.

21st Dec 2012, 02:18
I'm pretty sure at this stage no one is going to be eliminated unless they do have a serious medical complication. In any case the psychomotor test tells them who they want working for them, the medical tests are just part of every pilot's life. So ny virtue of doing those tests you are pretty much in and you can count them as your initiation into the profession. About movies and stuff I will pm you when you r 100% sure you are coming to 43. All the best bro.

However, you need to catch a wake-up.

its a pretty straight forward test, you look at some plates with colours then your supposed to identify some numbers in the plates, if you cant see the numbers, your colour blind! Intakes are normally two per financial year. The current group in the interviews is the second in in the 2012/2013 financial year. Zeus Kanathi
9th Feb 2013, 05:03
hehe, could be but i don't think so for the simple reason that a CV is not a professional certificate. I also don't see why they would need a CV because it's clear that most of their recruits are fresh-from-High-School breeds and mayb one or two people who have a degree or diploma. I think a CV would be more relevant for the direct entry lot

Magnate

kibz2005
9th Feb 2013, 09:06
I'll give you some advice for free, whenever you go for a job interview carry at least 5 copies of your CV. That should be enough for each member on the panel. It gives the interview panel the impression that you actually thought about what would happen in the interview and that you planned ahead. It also gives people the chance to browse through your history, and learn more about you when one of their colleagues is asking you a question.

It doesn't matter if you are straight out of high school. You must have volunteered in some organisation or participated in some kind of extra-curricular activity at one point in your life. You always learn new things and grow from these experiences so don't be afraid to mention them. They could go a long way in helping people understand what kind of a person you are...

all the best people.

Zeus Kanathi
14th Feb 2013, 16:47
For posterity's sake, we went for the oral interviews today,we were 26 of us with one lady on board. I personally thought it would take 10-15mins from what I had gathered here but to my surprise they had added what they called Theumatic Apperception Test/Vienna Test. Don't be scared by the name it isn't that bad. We also got interviewed by two friendly Mzungus from a new aviation school called AIFA in S.A which is in partnership with China. After that we sat for the oral interview infront of a panel of six and it was just the way it has always been - filling a form while they ask you questions. Finally they told us to wait for their communication tomorrow

Flaps17 is right. A few of us have been emailed for the aptitude test.

Magnate

Thanks for that Information. Maybe AIFA wants to/already has a contract with KQ for Pilot Training. Those successful may be split and go for training in different schools rather than, for example, 43 only.

From their Facebook page, AIFA seems to be a new school and they have new planes. They have been training Chinese cadets and they want to expand their training portfolio.

On another note: what was the purpose of those tests? They caught us off guard.

Hi Everyone,

Just got the email a couple hours ago. Have been following this forum for over a year now and am glad I can finally be appart of it lol.

Scheduled for the 22nd at 730am dunno how my mind is gonna be working at that time for an aptitude test but looking forward to it and to meeting everyone whose going to be there.

I have read the earlier posts but does anyone have a book or tests that would prepare us as I have not taken an aptitude test before.

Thanks,

Magnate

For those going for the interviews-direct entry, we wish you all the best. I wonder if you will be taking the same tests like we did in the earlier stages.

For the rest, we hope KQ will communicate early in the week to avoid undue anxiety.

All the best to everyone. May God be with us.

Hi guys? I have been invited for the aptitude test on 22nd February, but I happened to lose my original Identity card last week, could I use a coloured photocopy of it together with waiting card plus a police abstract?
