Thanks the one, Handsfree, the picture was from Janes 1938 (reprint version) where it is titled Turku-Abo and its new runways. Turku is just detectable on the original spelt out in the centre of the field. Well that one had a good run and a good mix of players. You have control.............Doug

Not unlike my 'home' airfield, Sleap. On reflection there is a missing village!

minuteman
3rd Nov 2009, 11:36
I would agree (missing village et al!) - Sleap

*edit*

Evidence (as requested):

Second photo shows small meandering water course on the near side of the airfield boundary - looking south over Sleap airfield (in Google Earth) gives same runway layout and the small water course still exists just north of the airfield.

Also, the first photo has a date of 1942 - Sleap didn't open till 1943 so the "under construction" phase would tally datewise.....

Ther terminal was built in 1937 by the Nizam of Hyderabad and the photo originally shown is also displayed in Chowmahalla Palace.

(No one is close geographically yet. It's not Latin America, but it has some close ties.)

The runway is a little over 2700m in length (asphalt). It had international sked services in the 60's and up to the mid 70's. None since, but used sporadically for large (heavy) cargo flights and even occasional chartered pax flights into the country, as the airport in the Capital has a much shorter runway.

Tacklebury
22nd Nov 2009, 18:39
Captain Airclues.

Well done Dave.:ok:

The first flight into Port Meadow was May 1911 when Herbert Latham landed in an Antoinette monoplane. It all ended in tears when he crashed.

The Royal Artillery were also based there. As was No.1 Training Squadron.

The last flying movement was in early 1919.

A camp was set up at Port Meadow in 1940 to accommodate evacuees from Dunkirk.

The river in the back ground is the River Isis, a tributary of the Thames, I think and the three span bridge I think carries the B4044. Looking at Google Earth, there is not much left now. Pity.

Good challenge !!

Thanks guys, I think Dave has declared open house.

The aerodrome in question is not a dreadful place. I think it is Swakopmund, (FYSM), located on the central coast of Namibia, Africa. A lovely place, especially if you like post-colonial Lutherian German remnants. Note: runway 06/24 was resurfaced in asphalt, (tarmacadam), since your photo.

Spitballing here but..... USAAC training station in Texas or the western US. USAF in 51-53 for Korea build up.

Large parade field suggests a basic training/commissioning station. Distance from ramps to runways suggests it was designed for multi-engines. The 2 layer hangaring scheme is interesting for a war expansion field tho. Not the norm.

A navigator/bombardier training field?

Just some ideas. Not playing 'is it bigger than a breadbox' and no answer required. ;)

Thanks Clint ; that was a real guess,as I thought that was the river at the left of the picture. In the winter of `69 we were doing icing trials in Ottawa, and heard about a Lysander that was going to fly at Rockliffe,so we went down there to watch and chat,as one of the trials managers had been a flight -test assistant/`gingerbeer` at `the Glove Factory`(Wetlands) in the war and had time on Lizzies, and the engine rep with us had knowledge of the Mercury and it`s foibles. Anyway much advice was shared, and eventually it flew successfully, on the first rotation on t/o,the mains lifted, and it rotated about the tailwheel..Later,I became a member of the Rockliffe flying club, and spent time down there flying ski-equipped Aernockers and Citabrias, great fun....
Anyway,sorry for the digression,but it`s -OPEN HOUSE...

Chievres Airbase Belgium.

First established by the Germans at the end of 1917. They flew fighters from the unprepared grass field.

This particular photograph was taken 13th October 1953 by a Meteor FR9 of No. 2 Sqd. based at Wahn, Germany. In front of the hangars are Meteor F8’s and an Airspeed Oxford.

The modern day photograph below shows the original 3 hangars still standing.
