The hangars appear to be a mixture of Belfast Truss and open front types like those at Halton, so I would go for an ERFTS in the late '30s. There is a similarity to the hangars at Fairoaks and Farnborough but the layout is all wrong.

Thread etiquette dictates that whoever identifies an airfield has the privilege of posting the next picture or declaring open house when anyone can post a picture.

Clint

If it has a 'Hurricane' season then it must be in the Western Hemisphere.

According to the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, a “hurricane” and a “typhoon” are simply different names for a “tropical cyclone.” As a general rule, these cyclones are given the name “hurricane” in the Western hemisphere (the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, or the South Pacific Ocean east of 160E), and the term “typhoon” is applied in the Eastern hemisphere (the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the dateline).

Mr_Grubby

Well the black stuff really works !!

Yes it's Clovis or rather Cannon AFB as it is now.

Started as a civil aerodrome in the late 1920’s and was called Portair Field.

In the 1930’s it was renamed Clovis Municipal Airport.

This picture was taken in 1943, a year after it was renamed again as Army Air Base Clovis.

Its name was later once again changed to Cannon AFB named after General John K. Cannon (1892–1955), a former commander of Tactical Air Command.

Cannon AFB is now the home of the 27th Special Operations Wing (27th SOW).

They operate a variety of special operations aircraft, including the MC-130W Combat Spear, AC-130H Spectre, MQ-1 Predator, MQ-9 Reaper and CV-22 Osprey.

Another big clue to hopefully wrap this up and allow us to move on.

This aerodrome was opened in April 1939 as an RAF station.
After WW2 it became a Civil Airport.
BKS operated the first schedual service in May '53 to Northolt using a DC 3.
Towards the end of 1956 the men of steel took over.
Today little remains of the original site as it is heavily industrialised.

There, that should do it !!!!! I have given it away !!!

It is indeed within the former Soviet Union.

This is quite an obscure photo that doesn't indicate too much information about the mystery airfield; except the 'major' slope, both down and up, within the runway landing zone; hence, a few clues might be in order.

Nikita Khrushchev and Fidel Castro held talks at this airfield about the siting of missiles in Cuba.

TheChitterneFlyer
3rd Jul 2010, 00:23
It was therefore an important strategic airfield that provided one of the few available staging posts to Cuba from the Soviet Union.

Folks,

I know I'm cutting in line here, but I thought you'd get a kick out of this.

First, what airport? (I know after lurking in this thread and its predecessors for a year or so, it will take about 0.5 seconds for someone to nail it!)

http://www.rottenray.com/z/pprune-guess.jpg

The real reason I posted this is to share this quaint video.

The Airport (1948) (http://www.archive.org/details/AirportT1948)

It's clearly aimed at a primary-school audience, the voiceover is sort of poopy, but you'll find a lot of nice nostalgic footage of vintage airport ops.

Enjoy!

Vnukovo was used as a meeting place, and probably still is. However I am not confident about this being correct as it does not appear to have a humped runway and being near Moscow I can't see how it would be any better than others as a staging post to Cuba? However, I'll throw it in to keep things moving!

TheChitterneFlyer

Mr_Grubby is very close but not quite there.

The Soviet Cold War strike-force would have used this airfield to launch any offensive upon the USA. To this day it operates Backfire TU22-M bombers.

TheChitterneFlyer
3rd Jul 2010, 11:14
The 'upslope' within the runway threshold zone meant that you had to get the landing flare absolutely correct; or plant the airframe very 'firmly' if you got it wrong! Having said that, there was a further 3000 metres of concrete to play with after the upslope; which you wouldn't see (visually) until you'd passed the 'hump'.

Our Russian Naval aviator hosts were most entertaining and provided copious amounts of Vodka!

TheChitterneFlyer

Descol; waaaaaay off-track. Head North to the land of the 'White Nights'.

Check-out the previous posts... Murmansk was close; Polyarny was a tad north of Murmansk; try looking south.

Another clue... there's a massive hole in the ground adjacent to the local town (of the same name as the airfield) where iron ore is extracted for the use of shipbuilding. The translation of the town's name literally means 'Reindeer Mountain'.
