Thank you, Mr. Grubby.
Pure luck. I found Congonhas Airport whilst researching Descol's earlier challenge. I considered it to be a possisible contender for the future, so I made a note of it!

Foreground is Kansas City, Missouri. Now Kansas City Downtown. [KMKC]
Background is Kansas City, Kansas. Google Earth shows it being redeveloped.

United Airlines used to stop at KMKC on the trip from DCA to DEN. One one of my trips as a PAX, they shut the plane's door before the first officer reboarded from his walk-around. Something of a joke, I think.

Magazine photo of KMKC, likely taken in 1932.

seacue
1st Mar 2011, 16:27
Yes, it's Newark Airport. I think the passenger terminal was next to the car park nearer the camera. The port facilities in the background should have helped identify the site.

It is a convenient airport to downtown New York City because of the good road connection to the Holland Tunnel.

In the early 1930s American Airways ran an hourly shuttle from Newark to Washington, DC.

It's a typical UK military triangle runway pattern with two thirds of the triangle now steeped in history, it seems there is a busy road, perhaps a motorway, in the background, yet the layout/colour of the buildings don't indicate it being, now, a military airfield likewise the runway markings don't appear to be military.

What is different to many 'triangle' airfields is that this main runway has a taxiway running alongside the length of the runway, kind of like Machrihanish but a busy road, alone, wouldn't fit in with Machrihanish. :)

Spratly Island, the largest island in the group that is occupied by Vietnam. Other islands and reefs are occupied by China, Taiwan, Philippines, Brunei and Malaysia.

Africa was my first choice with Nairobi and Kampala as prospects, the Sun is high, the apron personnel are in shorts and long socks, however all the aircraft are American.

The tower has a structure common around S.E. Asia, but not likely to be Malaysia or Singapore as no British influence (apart from the long socks).

So I'll go for somewhere in the Philippines and Eastwards to Guam.

Nagging doubt about the terrain, doesn't look tropical.
