descol and sabredog;

May I take you back to Page 267 and image 5336. That is not Ipoh!! It is Paya Lebah which was Singapores' new airport opened in August 1955. The Malayan Airways DC-3 is facing East towards the single Rw 02/20. The photograph was possible taken not long after the airport opened. Do you happen to have other photographs of airports on Malayan Airways route structure 1950-1960. Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Taiping, Penang, Alor Star, Kuantan, Kota Baru, Kuching, Sibu, Brunei, Labuan, Jesselton, Sandakan. I was there for many years and those particular airports are drenched in memories for me. Regards

I can see my old house from here ! I lived, worked and flew out of here in the late 1970s and early 1980. We are looking down runway 08 at Watson lake, Yukon. CYQH.
The cross-wind runway is closed. The aerodrome was part of the Northwest Staging route during WW.II, and was shared by the USAAF and RCAF. It was a cold weather test facility for the RCAF during the immediate post-war period. The aerodrome still has an ILS, VOR/DME and an NDB. The old wooden terminal building is an historical site.

Roma Urbe it is, formerly Aeroporto del Littorio. Just a few kilometers north of Rome centre and on the main Milan - Rome TGV line. Hosted Auto racing in the late 20's early 30's. Name changed for poilical correctness after the Mussolini era.

Now operating as essentially a Flying club and for sightseeing trips. Less that a few hundred metres from Sky Italia, the TV Broadcaster, who I visit a lot.

Spook has it! Asmara International Airport formerly Yohannes IV Airport.

When the photo was taken (in 1968) Eritrea was part of Ethiopia to whom it had been ceded in 1951 by UN mandate (and against the wishes of its inhabitants). It regained its independence in 1993 after a long and bloody war with Ethiopia.

I used to go there regularly in the early 70s and for a time was involved in trying to broker a deal with the IEAF to repatriate one of their abandoned Fairey Fireflies of which a fair number littered the military ramp at Yohannes IV. I don't think it ever happened.

Correct ! Well done sir.

The Gleiwitz incident was a staged attack by Nazi forces posing as Poles on 31 August 1939, against the German radio station Sender Gleiwitz in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia, on the eve of World War II in Europe.

On the night of 31 August 1939, a small group of German operatives, dressed in Polish uniforms and led by Naujocks seized the Gleiwitz station and broadcast a short anti-German message in Polish (sources vary on the content of the message).

The Germans' goal was to make the attack and the broadcast look like the work of anti-German Polish saboteurs.

Other than the existence of a memorial and the complete absence of trees, hedges etc, on the ground you would be hard pushed to tell that there had ever been an airfield here. From the air the faint outline of the runways is visible together with vestiges of concrete peri tracks still used for agricultural purposes.

Corsairoz

Indeed it is USA, but not Arizona.

Its a very seasonally busy airport with a Hollywood link.

Heber City, a short drive from Park City where I was enjoying a ski holiday some years ago (OK many years ago....). Got bored with skiing and drove to Heber City on a clear day and rented a C172 within 60 minutes of just turning up. (but I did at that time have an FAA licence too.)

Fantastic 90 minutes flying along one valley towards Salt Lake City over the ski resorts then back in through another valley over Alta and Arapahoe ski resorts. One of the most spectacular flights I ever did.

An added bonus was spotting a P51 being polished in a hanger and not only helping but chewing the cud with its enthusiastic owner. Happy times.

Heber City Airport is the closest to Sundance and once a year when the film festival is on it is host to many expensive private and corporate jets. Elevation 5300ft or therabouts.

A stunning part of the world....

No idea what the Demoiselle-looking creature is. The caption says 'Impounded RAF Lancasters and a Mosquito behind them'. And it is in Sweden.

The text says that there should be an FFV Ö 1 Tummelisa between the second Lancaster and the Mosquito. Cannot see that clearly.

12th Jul 2011, 22:28
A little `googling ; M 1 and M2 were the 2 Swedish Army monoplanes in 1913,so that may be it between the Lancs; no idea if it was Swedish made,or a copy of possibly a Morane.Tummeliten/lisa were biplanes produced later,designed/built in Sweden,as trainers. The last one last flew in `62 and now in a Museum, but a replica was built by Mikkal Carlson ,he who had the landing accident in his Fokker Triplane at Duxford on Sunday.. ed; it may be `head-on` just by the far Lanc`s stbd wheel..

Correct, Mr Grubby.

There is a website that attributes this picture to Rinkaby in Skåne, Sweden, and another that attributes it to Malmslätt /Malmen in Östergötland.

I believe the latter. One of the Lancasters had originally landed in Rinkaby on 13 Jan 1945, the other in Kalmar on 30 Aug 1944.

Ndlandare frn Storbritannien - RAF (http://www.forcedlandingcollection.se/RAF/indexRAF.html)

Closest to camera Lancaster Mk.I PB842, then Monoplanet M 1, Lancaster Mk.III PB379/G, Ö 1 Tummelisa and Mosquito PR Mk.IX LR435/G.

These aeroplanes appear to have been displayed in an air-show in summer 1945, hence the exotic combination of types.
