Would this be within the region of Baltic Sea?

RegDep

Not Baltic Sea TCF, the sand and dunes have more commonality with The Netherlands.

Edit: Clue time: The commonality with the sand in dunes here and in The Netherlands is it is brought by the Rhine.

USAF yes; Debach no.

Constructed 1942/3 and in service until summer 1945, it is one of just a few stations which was associated with a single Eighth Air Force unit for the whole of its operational period.

The light-coloured structures are associated with its current usage. The hangar visible on the right hand side is one of two T2 types which were erected when the airfield was constructed and is no longer associated with aviation. The rusty-looking shed on the left houses one of the currently resident aircraft.

TF Green Memorial Airport, Providence RI. Opened in 1931 as Hillsgrove State Apt., then Hillsgrove AAF during WWII. The Shell Island strip in the far distance looks a bit tired, but it's Happy Hour at the Quonset Point O Club - Still ANG I think. OH again if correct, sorry. LFH

North African coast?

seacue
4th Jun 2011, 12:55
It looks vaguely like the old (circa 1942-1958) terminal at Peoria, Illinois. But many from that era are similar. There is no place that feels hotter nor colder than an airport in the US midwest / plains states.

sabredog
4th Jun 2011, 12:55
Sorry,Tacklebury. It is not on the North African coast.

Mr_Grubby

That engine cowling is very distinctive. What type of aeroplane sabredog ? That might give us a clue !

C.

seacue
4th Jun 2011, 13:43
See my guess in 5447. I think TWA flew Convairs into Peoria, which that might be. The name (blacked out) seems too long for Peoria. Just noticed the hill / mountain in the background --- certainly NOT Peoria.

zetec2
4th Jun 2011, 14:38
Don't think Convair variant, looks 4 engined, prop tip of inboard engine in LH corner, DC type perhaps ?, 4 engines with 3 bladers & big radials ?. PH.

seacue
4th Jun 2011, 14:45
OK, 4 engines, but square-tip blades. That puts it fairly late in the piston-engine period. Could be almost anywhere along United's transcontinental routes. They had "unscheduled stops" with their DC-7 s due to sick engines. That might also apply to American's transcontinental DC-7 routes.

sabredog
4th Jun 2011, 14:58
Gentlemen,it is not located in the U.S.A.
Mr.Grubby, the origional photograph is cropped,so I am unable to provide details of the a/c type. I think it might be a Douglas type, as seacue suggests.
After some "digging", the aircraft could well be a DC6B. This airport was used as a second hub in a domestic network.

Mr_Grubby
4th Jun 2011, 16:54
Ok sabredog.

We are talking northern hemisphere here ??

C.

sabredog
4th Jun 2011, 17:02
Yes,Mr.G. Think "Wine Dark Sea".

Lordflasheart
4th Jun 2011, 17:44
"Wine Dark Sea" suggests the Med. Looking at the blacked out bits, I see translations - as in top line - "aeroporto xxxxxx" and to assist those who speaka only da ingleezie - on the line below - "xxxxx Airport." Ditto for the signs over the Arrivals door and the Departures door - (or perhaps "Customs" and "Baggage") the first word being the local translation. None of that helps me one iota though.
LFH.

I saw similar Airports in Greece, may be Thessaloniki?

RegDep
4th Jun 2011, 19:06
This is the first terminal (old airport) in Thessaloniki, Greece. Picture in Wikipedia for this airport. Thessaloniki International Airport, "Macedonia" - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessaloniki_International_Airport,_%22Macedonia%22)

Oympic Airways had its main base was at Athens International Airport, with hubs at Thessaloniki International Airport, "Macedonia" and Rhodes International Airport, "Diagoras".

It is very possible that I have flown in this DC-6 from Kerkyra to Athens in July 1965. Flew in their Comet 4B from Frankfurt to Athens two weeks earlier.

Should go to dash7fan (if correct), not to me.

sabredog
4th Jun 2011, 19:11
It is indeed the old Thessaloniki Airport Terminal Building, Greece. I thought that Homer's desciption of the "Wine Dark Sea" would lead the way.

I think you are correct sabredog; the photo appears in web in that name, but I have it in a different name.

I have it as Tønder in Denmark (site of Zeppelin- and Garrison Museum in Tønder, Zeppelin and Garrison Museum Tønder (http://www.zeppelin-museum.dk/main.php?page=home&lang=en)).

This gives one a good perspective into the history of it: It was founded in 1914 in what was at the time Germany, but since the end of WW1 is in Denmark. Nowadays just fields with some bomb craters and an old hydrogen gas plant as the museum.
