A clue.

Europe, originally military, still operational, but the airfield is now somewhat reduced in size.

I thought H blocks as well but the field system looks too low country-ish and the admin/hangar layout isn't typically British. Got a hell of a munitions layout though which could possibly make it an MU or similar

Thanks, Clint. I immediately thought of Germany, but was lucky in that I started in ascending alphabetical order!

I am intrigued by the direct rail links into the site to the NW. I wonder what purpose that was for?

Anyway, many thanks for the challenge!

Here is my offering to the esteemed panel:

Nac, I think you`ll find a lot of continental airfields had their own branch lines onto camp, for weapons, fuel, troops resupply,Much easier than roads.
Your picture looks similar, but perhaps more East Germany or Poland ?

RegDep
5th Apr 2011, 20:47
nacluv, I think the railroad is a remainder of an extensive network from the inter-war time, when this place was busy making airships, including creating hydrogen gas for them from train-fulls of coal, chalk and bog iron!

See here: Flugplatz Ahlhorn - gestern und heute (http://www.buergerverein-ahlhorn.de/fliegerhorst/) (I think you get the gist, even if you wouldn't be fluent in German.)

The numbers 1 through 6 indicate the huge assembly halls

Everyone is on the right lines (no pun intended) with my challenge, and it has not lasted long. Dessau it is! I thought the fairly distinctive layout was quite interesting, and clearly it also easily betrayed its identity as a result!

To get a grip on the photo, Mr Gruppy, what would you recommend we focus on: The motorbike, the valley-ball net (?) the buildings, the sandy (dune-like ?) landscape, the barrels, or the guys sitting idle in the middle of the "apron"? This could be any place then and between then and now…. :8

Well done!!

After I mentioned landing in a Dash7 I thought I had given it away (as hardly anybody but the UN uses Dash7s anymore). As you can see by the runway photo, FOD wasn't / isn't the worst problem in such places. It's the people, horses, buffaloes, and motorcyles that randomly wander about.

To mitigate that we would establish a cordon of UN troops around the perimeter when we were going to fly in with the Dash. Worked well until the day we had to abort on very short final -- because one of the UN soldiers ran out onto the runway to take a photo of the aircraft!

Take it away RegDep...

RegDep
13th Apr 2011, 09:47
Sam, looked at this airport almost as the very first (how much closer can you get to Indonesia without being in Indonesia? And in fact, some sources refer to this as Indonesian airport :8). And your clue for a helicopter first and then Dash cried UN loud and clear. But somehow didn't get the terminal building right, because could't figure out that there must have been other buildings, too :O

From my UN trips (not own pic, not fancy chopping, either)

Mine is a bit far-fetched and post-festum, but lets have it. I will expedite it if it is not popular.

The drill: After this coronation, there was a major event arranged for the common people on a parade and exercise field, which later became and aerodrome. Which aerodrome?

There is a certain connection to the today's event (my apologies, Clint )

RegDep

Sabredog has it!

Khodynka Aerodrome (officially Frunze Central Aerodrome) was an airport in Moscow, Russia located 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) northwest of the centre of the city. It was the only airport in the city until the opening of Vnukovo in 1941. It is no longer active and today the whole site has been redeveloped for other uses.

One connection to the Royal Event (yesterday) is that the spouse of Nicholas, Imperial Consort of All Russias, Alexandra Fjodorowna (originally Alix von Hessen-Darmstad) was a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, and had been raised in her court since she was six years old, as her mother Princess Alice had died.

(This was, BTW, one of the reasons why Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany corresponded in English in part of the Dear Willy - Dear Nick correspondence (Giggle this!). The mother of Wilhelm II was the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria.)

Over to you, Sir!

Good-night clues:

Used to be exercise field for military and was used as an "airfield" during 1913 - 1914. Started as normal aerodrome in 1924,there was from 1925 to 1936 scheduled passenger traffic, in 1932 to 39 European destinations. After post WW2 military use, was gradually phased out, and is now an important sand and dune biotope in its geographical area.
