Old Sarum?

Duckbutt
21st Jul 2009, 18:46
Sorry, not Chingford or Old Sarum.

Between the wars the field was used by the County Flying Club:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b229/Twyler/Puzz-25d.jpg

There was some military activity in early WW2 then it closed. The hangar survived until about 1970 or so when it was severely damaged in a storm. Some station buildings can still be identified including the Officer's Mess and the combined chapel/NAAFI.

21st Jul 2009, 19:21
YESS!!!!!

Bekesbourne near Canterbury it is. Used by 50 sqn during WW1 to defend the capital against raids by Zeppelins and Gotha bombers.

Wing Cmdr Arthur Harris became the squadron CO in December 1918.

Very special mention I suggest for Ridge Runner (that bloke quietly sobbing in the corner over there) for the huge effort he put in. Also to 'Terrence' who got the right answer to me by pm.

Well done handsfree, you have control,

Nothing to offer, so I think it only right that Ridge Runner gets the honour of the next challenge as he was so close on several occasions. (50 Sqn was A T Harris's next posting after 44 at Hainhault Farm)

Really enjoyed that, thanks. Learnt a lot.

Ridge Runner
22nd Jul 2009, 20:32
How about Veere? A Fokker C.XIV floatplane base?

one11
22nd Jul 2009, 21:58
Not in the Netherlands - although KLM would have had service here at the time of the picture.

Going offline for most of today - more clues later if still unsolved

Ridge Runner
23rd Jul 2009, 07:53
I'm still hung up on the steep roofed house and therefore is this in Danish territory somewhere? The hanger is RAF-style for sure, though. As i say, its the house that ispulling me away from Scotland/England....

skytrain10
23rd Jul 2009, 08:28
As we are wandering around Europes Baltic coast, the coastal setting/sea plane base would tie up with Copenhagen Kastrup?

Ridge Runner
23rd Jul 2009, 08:57
Yep, I thought of that but all the pics on the web seem to be quite different. Its true, though, that KLM operated seaplane services in to there..... I'm still inclined to agree with you though.....

Ridge Runner
23rd Jul 2009, 09:01
Actually, having receied Kastrup's history, it was more advanced at this stage in its life.... By 1939 it had three runways and a new terminal. I can't find any pics of it though!

Ridge Runner
23rd Jul 2009, 10:42
Having now reviewed images it would be Kastrup for me.. well done again Skytrain10 (assuming we're right!)

one11
23rd Jul 2009, 15:23
Kastrup it is. Around 1926. Here are two more pictures from the same set of contemporary images from Danish carrier DDL , showing one of their Fokker F.Vii 's plus another of KLM.

On the original of the air-view you can make out the name Rohrbach on the hangar, identifying use by this German manufacturer-in-exile.

That one seemed to justify the title "challenge"

Congratulations Skytrain10 and Ridge Runner - something of a team effort maybe but Sktrain10 was first and gets control

Ridge Runner
24th Jul 2009, 09:10
Well done Skytrain10! I guess its fairly unique alongside the Beagle Channel. Approach and departure are very interesting there!!!! We went in by MD80 and out by 737-200, both of which use most ofthe runway length. Appaent the old airport, which was on the area close to the town in this image, suffered an overun by a 737 at one time!

Over to you....

skytrain10
24th Jul 2009, 09:53
Thanks RidgeRunner...we actually put a 747 in there some years ago. Sadly I did not have the opportunity to travel on it. Stunning location though.

Could be one of hundreds!

I have been advised by PM that this was a standard design for the Ukraine and subsequently checked this out with some other images on the web. Its actually Lvov = Lviv = Lwow but Chelyabinsk for example is nearly identical. So to make matters simple - Ridge Runner you have control ....

Ridge Rider made it ! Saved me using my next clue which would have been "Don't worry, its going to be OK- !" (Yuk)

Prague - Ruzyne . The 1937 terminal . After one war, three invasions/liberations, two revolutions and a state break-up, still virtually unchanged and still in use for Government/VIP flights.

That was fun . You now have control - or maybe Open House in the interests of thread diversity.

Also thanks for the third-party contribution by PM just before the last clue.....

Goudie has it

Hatfield it is on the occasion of first display to be held by the Royal Air Force Reserve Flying Club.

The aircraft flying by is G-ACDP the Saro Cutty Sark of A.S.T. (Air Service Training) from Hamble. This aircraft remained in service used by No 3 E & RFTS until 1942.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r231/thawes/SaroCuttySarkwithGenetMotors.jpg

not the prettiest of aircraft IMHO.

The First Flight of SARO "Cutty Sark" can be found here:

YouTube - SARO Cutty Sark first flight (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3pBO5kjTbo)

The John Williams clue is that he wrote the music for Spielberg's film "Saving Private Ryan" ("Hymn to the Fallen") and Hatfield featured in the film because it was where the ruins of the fictional French town of Ramelle were created and used as location shots for the film.

Davidsoffice, you've mentioned everything but the name of the airfield but you're absolutely right it was a great show with all the aircraft you mention. I was a young cpl/tech on 617 sqdn at the time and took this pic seconds before the Skyblazers came screaming over. No prizes though for which aircraft stole the show.

PS. How do you know all that?
Ah! just found the website with all the info. Seems it was Sept. '58 not '59

We flew LGW-LRA-SKG (Thesalloniki)-LGW weekly until Skiathos was ready. Taken in 1982 the base was then home to a number of RF-84Fs and RF-4Es. The Daks were based as a local transport flight and occupied this ramp with a SAR Agusta 205. RR

Correct Naclav although I guess the last clue gave it away. It is indeed Errachidia in Morocco. My former company operated some charter flights there in 2007. Its busiest time, hence my clue, is during the Paris-Dakar Rally, and whereas I am not 100% familiar with that event, one of the stages used to be from Errachidia to Ouarzazate.

Old Bald Pilot
5th Aug 2009, 01:55
The event was in December 1981 when the world's oldest pilot (bald or otherwise) took to the air on his 90th birthday in an aircraft he had built himself using the engine from his wife's Beetle. The Airworthiness Authority revalidated his licence for yet another year. It was reported world wide, featured by the BBC amongst others. The Parachute Regiment dropped a team in and the Air Force did a Fly Past when they finally found the field.

CathayBrat

Found this in Flight safety archive.

"Ninety years old—and still flying. Air Cdre
"Daddy" Probyn, who must be the world's
oldest licensed pilot, steps out of his Jodel at a
special gathering in Kenya last month to
celebrate his 65 flying years. He learned to fly
in 1916, and ended his service career as Commandant
of the RAF College, Cranwell, before
moving to Kenya post-war. Today he still
regularly flies his single-seat VW-powered Jodel"

Still going with Wilson, he's short final for runway 07 with what look like the Ngong hills in the background. The plane is hanging in the roof of the hanger next to the aeroclub. (at least it was last time i was there!)

The reference to the flight from near Kilimanjaro to Nairobi on his 90th is pure BS. He flew the Jodel in the morning and spent the afternoon and early evening at the Aberdare Country Club for the celebrations. Baden-Powell was also a resident of Nyeri. It is also the location of The Outspan Hotel which is home to "Treetops" where the Queen first learned of her father's death.
