James M. Cox - Dayton International Airport

Mr_Grubby
26th Jul 2010, 06:24
seacue.

Yes !!

James M Cox Dayton Airport Ohio.

In August 1928 a property in Vandalia, Ohio was selected to be the local airfield.

On December 17, 1936, thirty-three years to the day after the Wright brothers’ first flight, a dedication ceremony was held to officially open the airfield as the Dayton Municipal Airport Ohio.

Over the next several years, World War II played a significant role in the growth of the Dayton Airport. During the period of 1942-45, the U.S. Department of Defense acquired various real estate interests in and around the Airport for the construction of an army training airfield.

In 1952, Dayton City Commission passed a Resolution to rename the Airport the “James M. Cox, Dayton Municipal Airport.” after James Middleton Cox, a prominent Democratic Governor of Ohio.

The airport thrives to this day.

The actual runway at Florence (Firenza) is much longer than the image portrays. This particular image appears to have been 'stretched' in the horizontal plane... check-out Google Earth and you'll see what I mean!

The VASIs (the four red lights to the left of the runway) are spaced much further apart than should be expected.

Yes, the photo does look as though someone has tinkered, but it's still unmistakeably Florence...

I'm wondering why the strip is so wide, why the pattern of surface materials is just as it is, and whether there's a particular reason for keeping the whole thing up (I think it has all been resurfaced recently) to give a huge TODA/EDA but wiith such a tiny LDA... If they were building A380s here, but finishing them elsewhere, it would make sense!

Sorry wrong continent - try europe. Commercial flights recently stopped here.

And on a personal note, my sister who owns a big chunk of land at the top of the pic, is hoping to buy the airfield.

Well, last time I tried looking at the shadows and fauna I was correct, lets try again.

I would guess about 55 - 65 N, Northern Europe somewhere, Summertime. Germany at a push? Southern Sweden? Denmark maybe?

From the shadows I would guess the runway orientation to be perhaps 16/34?

Lets see.....

Hi Cap'n DBL, how are you doing? I've read that Iceland doesn't have any trees though I've only been around REK.
My guess would be Sweden though the hills in the background would suggest further north. My initial thoughts were somewhere like Sundsvall Harnosand but its a long time since I was there.

My sisters place is Askilje Camping (including a chunk of land which just about reaches the airfield. Camping, Chalets, motorhomes, etc. As long as you don't mind the odd bear or moose (really) roaming around you would love it.

Pics here MobileMe Gallery (http://gallery.me.com/clivesinclair#100234)

She only moved there in March 2010 and then commercial flights ceased in June - the airfield is up for sale and she is keen to buy and keep it active.

A wonderful place. One hard runway and two grass runways. Fifth busiest airport in New Zealand. Commercial and GA traffic, plus gliding, skydiving, aerobatics, ultralights and warbird joyrides, all in a Class D zone. Try that at Bournemouth!

The Canberra is a real "Red Herring" as it is one of the very early B-57s built by the American Martin Company. It still retains the bubble canopy as per the original R.A.F.Canberras.

The following Mks were built with a fighter type canopy, with tandem crew seating, which is the type generally associated with the B-57.
