They all do, don't they!

Going back to the "Storch". It can't be, it is too small. Also it sits at too high an angle. It may be a replica. If so I can't imagine too many replicas in Bosnia? I know it doesn't help with the airfield ID but I like the detail to be right.

The F-27 in the foreground could be telling. The colour scheme is much like the Algerian but of course if it was Algiers it wouldn't be BP dishing out the juice! And are the Canberras British? They could be South African? That might fit with the BP bowser..... RR

The F-27 has the old East African colours which along with the Dak, Canberras and Brit with reference to Phil, suggests Embakasi though Nairobi has already been suggested and dismissed.

I wonder whether its just Phil and not Liz as well so perhaps its independence for Kenya? Would the Canberras still be there then? Would the F27 be in service? Did Phil go anywhere else on that trip?

goudie
10th Sep 2009, 18:51
Good effort chaps but none correct. Some more clues for you.
The Canberras are from 32 Sqdn, which at the time, was based at Akrotiri.
We were there to do a fly past for a very important occasion.

Dar-es-Salaam at time of Tanganyika Independence Celebrations.
December 1961?

If so HRH arrived and eparted in a Heron of the Queen's Flight and flew it back to Athens and possibly onwards to UK, but this will demolish the Britannia clue.

PS a day later.

Widening the options further, the Duke of Edinburgh attended the Kenya Independence Celebrations in Nairobi two years later in December 1963 which could tie in with the F27 clue. During this visit the D of E also visited Zanzibar and the Sudan so those too are just possible, but on this occasion, according to the Dec 19th 1963 Court Circular, he returned by BOAC Comet.

So I'm stumped!

A good one so far Goudie

The grass/coral airstrip which was used for community sports was sealed around 1994-- the photo of the new strip was taken shortly after.
The AMI 748 flew the central Pacicic route from the Marshall islands through Tarawa, Funafuiti to Nadi in Fiji - My job in those days took me on that route once a month - many memories and happy ones - save for the tropical storms the old 748 had to pass through.

Didn't know the actual name, but checked on flashearth.com to confirm after I posted. As I said the church tower gave it away.

AAO, you were two minutes too early!

It's Cam Ranh airport, the new civil airport for Nha Trang. Between the tower and the mountains is Cam Ranh Bay, one of the best deep water harbours in SE Asia, home at various times to the Russian Navy (twice) and the US Navy.

I took the photo a week ago on my first trip there.

Here is a photo from 1966 when it was a lot busier:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/india42/CRB-C-130-Ramp-JS.jpg

The new tower is on the "land-side" of the C130 ramp in the foreground.

Spot on Mr_Grubby!

The US Army's former France Field which morphed into NAS Coco Solo. The birthplace of US Senator John McCain. Now closed and mostly overrun by a seaport/industial park.

Located near Colon, Panama it was likely the origin of the saying "This isn't the worlds arsehole but you can see it from here".

You have the controls!

Note: Apologies to Ridge Runner but after consulting with an impartial observer it appeared that your guess of 'Panama' seemed a bit too much like like 'bracketing' with a lucky near hit. Had I directly responded to that it would have given the game away without really answering the challenge. Further in my defense, it was actually located in what was known as the US 'Canal Zone' Territory back then, not Panama per se. Splitting hairs I know but I felt it best for the contest.
