Someone is suffering from memory loss, as Luton was refused permission to expand by the government, which is why the famous marquees were put up. In fact Luton was meant to shut down with the opening of London’s third airport so someone buying a home in the 70’s could have expected the airport to eventually close. From the mid 70’s until the mid 90’s the airport stagnated with passenger figures usually well below 2m, as passengers and airlines headed for Gatwick, so it was reasonable to expect this would continue. Different story from the late 90’s when by this time the airport was taking off but still it was claimed the new terminal had a capacity of 5m when it opened in 1999.
Watching the video (sound track starts after a few seconds) the only thing to change is that it is now airport policy to pack out the terminal while in 1974 they were apologising for the overcrowding while blaming the government.

Two things: firstly there was DHL flights early on Saturday (sorry Pabely) and second I was led to believe Luton was full overnight, how come then a Titan 321 is night stopping after arriving from Graz this evening and positioning back to Graz for another flight back to Luton in the morning (F1 related)?

Who says Luton is full? Passenger figures are below 2019 levels so unless aircraft are flying around with plenty of empty seats that might not be the case.

Oh dear, I am talking about the number of stands which are available for aircraft to park on. I am sure the airport would like more based aircraft if there more stands available. Aircraft do not fly 24 hours a day Spanisheyes!

For what it’s worth, the furlough scheme and the relatively safe investments that airports are should’ve prevented this same situation everywhere else too. But maybe people don’t want to go to work doing early shifts lugging bags for €10 an hour!

Luton seems to have escaped the woes of other airports although there are one or two stories about long delays in disembarking and collecting luggage.
The airport should be a sound investment if LRT hadn’t taken on so much debt with its accounts making for depressing reading. Nothing in the press about it or on the LRT website, as LBC and LRT like to control the agenda and would rather talk about this nonsense. https://lutonrising.org.uk/afrofest-comes-to-luton/

Same issue at Liverpool. ‘New’ runway was opened in 1966…that’s two generations ago for most current residents of Speke and Hale. They have purchased property in the full knowledge they are near an airport. Doesn’t mean airports shouldn’t strive to be better neighbours though. Or that developers need to be more thoughtful about their choice of housing sites.

To say LTN has escaped the worst of the delays is not my experience at all, in fact the exact opposite. The two main carriers out of LTN seem to be having a major breakdown with their respective handling agents. For one in particular, the airport operator, rather than the handling agent, seems to trying it's best to keep the show on the road due to the lack of staff at the handling agent who do not appear to be able to retain staff due to the poor renumeration, this needs to be immediately corrected. Currently it seems to be the default to have no marshaller, no manpower to position steps, no baggage handlers, no push back crew etc. This is resulting in missed slots, passengers and bags stuck on aircraft for unacceptable lengths of time (regularly 40+ mins), crew running out of flight duty hours, knock on delays and cancelled flights etc.

It doesn’t help that enhanced payments for evenings / nights / weekends / bank holidays don’t exist anymore. Bad enough doing a night shift but with no extra money many people won’t do it.
I hear the Dart is struggling to recruit. 12 shifts have been replaced with 10 hour shifts although the shifts now end at midnight and not 11pm. 3:45 starts are still required.

if aircraft noise is perceived an issue then why are all those hamlets and villages and towns and City!s selling properties on average 40 to 50 percentage higher than the national average? Equally South Luton has homes worth between 1 and 2 million pounds. The fact is by far the majority of complainers are those who live anywhere between 5 and 30 miles away. More flights fly over Watford and Elstree all day long and through the night at heights typically below 6000 feet and is not an issue for those living underneath the LHR routes. Whilst trying to being impartial if noise is that bad then someone should at minimum advise all those estate agents in Harpenden and St Albans areas and those north Bedfordshire and those west Hertfordshire so that property prices are lowered accordingly!
When I worked for Court Line in 1970 and Luton Corporation in 1971/2 there were no such enhanced payments.
