Its not Dubai in particular, its the onward connections that you have with the DXB two step, which is why the route is so popular, and is one of the reasons I will not be in LHR for a long long time.

Agree about Emirates, it's absolutely astounding what they are achieving at MAN. Is it too soon to talk about a 3rd daily A380?

I wonder who will be next on the A380 bandwagon? I appreciate the list is short and limited to either EY or QR.

Elsewhere QR mention LHR as a future A350 destination. I wonder if MAN might get a slice of that pie also?

With capacity constrained at LHR and an expanding domestic feed a few of us have been banging on about preclearance.

Here is why !

Interesting that article doesn't refer to APD as far as I could see. Maybe it's because the potential fare saving can only be achieved by buying separate tickets XXX-DUB and DUB-YYY, but I assume that doesn't guarantee your connection or being put on another flight if you miss the connection. The big selling point is therefore the pre-clearance and what they allege is less hassle.

I doubt too many folk would choose to fly MAN-JFK via DUB as opposed to direct but I guess MAN-SFO via DUB could be quite attractive. Incredible that EI will have a daily service there this summer.

Out of interest, how much transfer time is needed to allow for the pre-clearance?

The minimum connect time EI to EI is 75 mins. Personally I think that is a bit tight as the preclearance facilities at DUB can get quite busy. Even so it's a great product, and I really don't know why MAN isn't making more rapid progress on becoming the first UK airport to offer preclearance.

GDS and Air Canada website shows that MAN-YYZ is running the same season in S15, at the same frequency and season length of S14.

So, just watched a video of Vitjay Bathia, head of Air Canada Rouge, filmed last week in Denver (routes conference), where he was once again insistant that 'Dublin, Manchester and Lisbon' have been increased?

Dublin and Lisbon, yes, but, from what I can see, nothing for Manchester? What exactly are they supposed to have increased?

Righto.

Swissport & Airline Services had ALL their rigs manned and in use.

A B777 is a big aeroplane. de-icing with one rig is not acceptable. Two rigs minimum should have been provided.
Two rigs for half the time instead of one rig that had to refill.

Perhaps, if the de-icing rig got a bit closer to the airframe it would actually hit the target and the fluid would still be hot enough to do it's job.

Tying to blast snow off the top of the fuselage from 30ft away is nuts!

The airport did a great job clearing the runway and taxiways. The two de-icing agents performed very badly.
I was at Oslo the other weekend arrived at night -4 and snowing, departed next morning approx -6. Not de iced on the ramp but departed to end of main taxyway to a very large de-icing pan, hot de-icer from a vehicle each side of our aircraft. Radio contact between pilot and de-icing crew. On completion of de-icing taxied straight on to the hold point for the runway and away. Fast efficient and well co-ordinated, UK airport have much to learn. In effect tell companies who work at the airports you WILL follow directions from the owners in this situation and work together for a fast efficient system.

airpig.

With the little amount of snow we get at English Airports generally cannot see any of them investing in such a de-icing system as they have at Oslo..where of course it probably snows their as much as it rains here 6 months of the year ?

Nigel,

It was two de-icing vehicles on a large pan, not too difficult really, one vehicle each side of our aircraft. Stops the need to de-ice on the stand. That allows de-icing fluid to run off into one place, far more efficient and time saving.

I've been de-iced in 4 different airports so far this Winter. Vienna & Munich outstanding, MAN not a million miles away considering the equipment we have and how rarely we get it.
Frankfurt was shocking despite having remote de-icing and de-icing on stand available. In FRA we waited 2 & a half hours for our turn. It was only a threat of running out of crew duty hours that bumped us up the que !

Thanks Ian - the airport were remarkably quick this month with the stats.

Perhaps the real surprise is the increase in charter pax which defies the trend of recent years. Although Sch. International has the smallest % increase, it has by far the largest increase in actual pax numbers with an extra 56,000.

Good to see the gain in cargo as well. I guess CX have helped with that.

Well we are allegedly still waiting to hear about a terminal expansion scheme...But that's the jam tomorrow..

However things can be done in the short term...

First of all Manchester is a Coordinated airport under the EU slot Regulation, so it's not a free for all. The scheduling limits should help keep a lid on peak period growth.

And then there are operational things you can do in the building to reduce congestion as it starts to build if you have the appropriate monitoring systems, resources and staff in place.

And better to plan now than rather than try and react when the s*it hits the fan.

This sort of thing helped immensely many moons ago; but is the expertise still there?

Well, if it all goes tits-up, we'll find out on social media and in the MEN soon enough

British Passengers Urged to take the Dublin Route :: Routesonline
Makes perfect sense. You're right to have been "banging on about preclearance". It's a big advantage for DUB.

However, it must not become so sucessful that the viability of direct flights from BFS, BRS, BHX, EDI, GLA, MAN and soon NCL are threatened. People need choice.

Interesting that article doesn't refer to APD as far as I could see.
Perhaps, because a 24 hour minimum stay in Dublin is required to avoid long haul APD.

The minimum connect time EI to EI is 75 mins. Personally I think that is a bit tight as the preclearance facilities at DUB can get quite busy. Even so it's a great product, and I really don't know why MAN isn't making more rapid progress on becoming the first UK airport to offer preclearance.
Yes, Ringway would be ideal for pre-clearance!

Well costs on the US side dictate that you are only going to get one facility rather than ones in multiple terminals; that is if the UK law ever changes to allow it to happen. And that's why nothing seems to be happening at present although the Government have been discussing it again recently.

In practical terms;

Do you put all the US flights into one terminal? And you therefore have some airlines with split terminal operations?

Or have some airlines use it and some not? I guess some airlines would be a bit hacked off by that

And how does all this square with making good use of all the terminal capacity?

Maybe all well and good if the rumoured single terminal happens, but before that I would suggest it could be a bit of a dog's dinner.
