TCX almost seem to be a 'Norwegian of the north' when it comes to long haul routes. It is good to see them growing so well from MAN and helping to make it a viable alternative to going via Heathrow for point to point travellers.

Ive been very impressed with the growth of TCX in the last few months.

If someone had said even a few years ago that TCX would be flying to Miami, New York and Los Angeles from MAN, many would have thought that person was mad.

The fact frequency has doubled on JFK shows they must have found a good niche on the route.

I do hope Miami survives, as fares still seem very soft and TCX are currently running a £100 off promo. They seem to be giving the route a decemt chance though, with it coming back fully in summer 2016 and a few dates available in the winter (I would have thought winter would be the better prospect for the route anyway)

Now, I wonder how brave TCX could get at MAN. Condor offer Cape Town, Male, Rio de Janeiro and Zanzibar from FRA, I would have thought CPT/MLE could be tried ex-MAN. There was also a lot of talk a few years ago that the Thomas Cook group were in talks wih Oakland Airport for flights to MAN/FRA/ARN, would love to see that come off.

Its looking like Saturday could see the Tampa flight, as currently the TCX website has 2 flights to MCO, but both depart at 1015. One as TCX472 and the other as TCX166.

The TCX166 is also much more expensive than the TCX472 too. Will be interesting to see what happens with that.

Serving MCO, MIA and TPA would allow TCX do sell more appealing fly drive and multiple stay packages which would make it easier for people to do say a week in Orlando/Tampa do do the theme parks followed my a week in Miami/the Everglades. If they ever add SFO or OAK they could do a similar thing for LAX/LAS/SFO.

I'm also interested to see how TCX develop their long haul routes from London with STN being thrown into the mix as well now.

Interesting times ahead it must be said.

DL / VS to ATL

I'm a long time regular on MAN-ATL with DL and last week I had the chance to sample the difference now it's operated by VS.
I use the route to get to my final destination in South America so it's an international transfer at ATL. Always buy a pointy end ticket due to the distance.

I have to preface my observations by owning up to being a DL fan - by far the best carrier across the pond.

Check in: the girl at the desk was surly and didn't seem to understand that it was possible to make an international connection in ATL. DL check your bag through to final destination on an I to I. This girl couldn't / wouldn't do that and said it was all to do with 'first point of entry in to the US'. I could see it wasn't worth arguing when she said 'take it up with the gate staff' - that old chestnut.

Lounge: Basically the nasty old Escape lounge as used by Delta (and around 15 years past its sell-by date). Same old problems: gloomy, dated, cramped, almost no phone signal. After biting in to a stale (as in at least a day old) Danish, I left to hang around the terminal instead.

Boarding: Almost everybody seemed to have 'Priority Boarding' not sure how that is - becomes almost a contradiction in terms.

Business Class cabin: that awful herringbone seating arrangement so recently beloved by some of the TATL carriers. Delta's refurbed 767s are inspired by the semi-enclosed modules of Emirates A380 upper deck - therefore obviously better. The main problem of the herringbone layout is you end up kind of awkwardly looking at the side of the stranger in the aisle opposite, then when you try not to look, get the feeling that they are looking at you. Of course the possibility of looking out the window is severely curtailed unless you enjoy a sore neck. The so-called privacy screen is not all that private as it's only semi-transparent, I could more or less make out the text that the woman in front was writing out prior to departure.

Food / drink / service: all pretty good as expected. Manchester based crew.

Transit process at ATL: same as Delta but with the very serious exception of having to reclaim and re-deposit my hold baggage.
By the way for those of you not used to regular TATL trips from the regions, one of the big disadvantages of connecting to your final destination in the US as opposed to (say) LHR is the hassle of reclaiming your bag at first US point of entry.

Overall, this is the big disadvantage plus the Business Cabin is not a patch on Delta's older but refurbished 767s - unless you like sitting at the bar. However if you prefer a sleep on the way home, having a bar a few meters away is not ideal.

Was chatting to the 'Purser' (or whatever he called himself) said the MAN base was 'excited' about this new development and said there were internal rumours of them doing a MAN-JFK as well. Could they end up running the shortly to start DL service to JFK? Running against a soon to be 6 a week TCX and the others on this route, could they survive?

Oh, and I now how many on Pprune love to hear about loadings - the crew actually announced how many on board - can't remember exact numbers but the outbound was quite low (170 ish) but over 200 on the return. The Business Class cabin was 100% full both ways but not sure how many paid for that or got upgrades.

DL / VS to ATL
All Names Taken, thanks for your comments.

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by Delta when the wife and I travelled to ATL in Economy Plus with them last December. (I need the extra legroom!). The service was good and even the food was acceptable, although I didn't find the seats all that comfortable. The outward flight was very busy and a late substitution of a/c with a different configuration meant there were 34 J class seats instead of the usual 26, and less economy seats.
Consequently, some lucky folk did get a free upgrade. Not us unfortunately!

one of the big disadvantages of connecting to your final destination in the US as opposed to (say) LHR is the hassle of reclaiming your bag at first US point of entry.
I wouldn't say this was much of a hassle as it only involved picking up the cases, walking a few yards and dropping them off again on a transfer belt, even though our connecting domestic flight was from a different terminal. It was the same at ORD in earlier years.

Have used VS several times to MCO in both Economy and PE. We preferred PE on the old B747s upstairs to that on the new A330.

LAX has been confirmed publicly by TCX but BOS hasn't (yet). LAX will be Mon/Sat according to TCX, however its still to early to see flights in GDS or other bookable platforms. Their S16 flights will be released tomorrow, however Ive been told LAX and the JFK increases will be officially announced on 3rd May on the launch of JFK/MIA.

I hate to mention the "E" word but given the passion by which Scottish MPs put there OWN agenda first ie Their Region This being first and foremost above everything else i am minded to ask if the motley crew of either persuasion in our area could do the same.

By contrast what a totally inept bunch we have in our region supposedly involved in ManAirport and the associated transport issues and infastructure !

Bagso

Why don't you tackle them about it and let us know how you got on rather than posting your grievances on here all the time.

Actually an observation rather than a grievance !

...but many many thanks indeed I will take note of that sound advice, when hell freezes over.
