Lufthansa diversion

Am I correct is thinking that this is the first time LH have diverted into SEN from LCY? I remember the Connies and Convairs in the past, but I mustn't go down that road again. Whoops I just did!

No DT, there have been one or two other visits and it seems that SEN is LH's preferred LCY diversion airport now.

Fog forecast tomorrow, SEN could do well if it avoids the fog itself.

Its seems that Adria's flirt with Southend is over as they are bringing out a new route to Luton.

Adria have operations at LGW, but probably didn't want the competition from Germania on the Pristina route. However, it would be a kick in the teeth if the Maribor route went elsewhere if they decided to operate it again either this year or in 2017.

For those who are interested, the airport railway station handled 520,734 passengers in 2014/2015 (an increase of 27.5% on 2013/2014) although there is no indication of how many were using the airport.

Luton was fog bound so it is not beyond the realms of possibilities that so was Stansted. If that is the case the diverted aircraft was probably not CAT 3.

But doesn't it take many years before they become cost effective? I do however praise their commitment to being green.

Jota

Jota are adding an RJ85 to their fleet, this being the current G-CHFE which will become G-JOTR. The aircraft is at Cranfield completing acceptance maintenance work.

JOTA have tapped into a successful business model by the sound of it. The passenger capacity of the Avro RJ/BAe 146 aircraft is very useful in the wider market.

Maybe one day JOTA will operate scheduled services from Southend? Far in the future, no doubt.......

See the airport has applied to build a new 260 space car park off the Harp House Roundabout. It will be operated as a valet car parking service. They obviously feel that there is/will be demand for it.

Does the airport need valet parking when the existing car parks are by the terminal?

Perhaps they're anticipating demand and developing facilities before they become overcrowded?

Or they've been reading this thread and are convinced that nobody will arrive by train!

That's a very strange application to make, unless they know something we don't.

Let's hope that's the case and they are about to announce a major new operator...............

Well, that may happen one day.

All Stobart need is a tenant to operate it.

Re Valet Parking

It would have to be valet parking otherwise the planning consent would not be given. There are no suitable pedestrian crossing points between the proposed site and the airport, and in any event it is a bit of a walk especially with luggage in tow.

The current planning application is simply to reinstate a planning consent granted for the site in 2012 that has expired under the 3 year non-commencement rule.

Presumably Stobart feel that this additional parking might still be needed within the next 3 years.

Valet parking usually involves dropping the car off close to the terminal like in the short term car park and then someone you have never met drives off in it to park it for you. No point when you can self park next to the terminal anyway.

Valet parking

Very true LTNman and if you look at the application (it is still an application and I cannot see that it has been approved yet) the short term car park will have space set aside for the valet parking operation, so not a net gain of 260 car parking spaces but a gain nonetheless. The valet car park will be pitched at people staying around 4 days, and one would expect will be priced to be cheaper than the equivalent 4 day parking charge in the short term car park.

I can't see it catching on. The time taken for the vehicle inspection totally negates the short car park to terminal building walk advantage but at least the airport is trying to improve revenues.
