Stand 9L now back in action as we loose 61 for the builders compound

9L is now a 2 way stand so aircraft have to really put their turn on to taxi from the south and pushing to face the north is shockingly tight
Same as Stand 60 that's now a 2 way push and taxi

They've started to remark the North Apron to the same spec as the Easten Apron, to hopefully give us more wingtip clearance

CTA complete

With the CTA and drop off zone now complete it is worth taking stock of the improvements.

With the removal of a temporary passenger route many passengers now have to cross the drop off lane twice rather than not at all. As can be seen in this photo most passengers are still using the now closed pedestrian crossing rather than its replacement.

One of the consequences of the new CTA design is that all vehicles passing through the tunnel, whether they are delivery lorries, buses, coaches or staff and visitors for LLA HQ and easyland have to take the long route through the pay barriers by the multi story car park to leave the CTA. This adds large volumes of traffic that are exempt from paying drop off charges.

The photo below shows 3 coaches that didn’t move for a good 3 minutes as the ring road was blocked with stationary traffic trying to get into the drop off zone even though the zone in the foreground appears to be empty. The reason for this emptiness is that any car stopping in the drop off zone away from the kerb brings the whole CTA to a standstill. This means that at peak times it is now taking up to 20 minutes for shuttle buses to get to the station due to further queues at the pay barriers. It is ironic that before the improvements shuttle buses only queued to get into the airport but now they also have to queue to leave the airport.

It is a fact though that queuing traffic is happening less often and the queues are much shorter but dismissing last year when the drop off zone was only part built queuing times as opposed to queuing length isn’t much different from before the work started on the CTA. One could argue that the £14 million spent on the CTA has failed to increase its capacity to handle 18 million passengers.

Arrivals 22.00 - 23.00

I could be wrong but I think stand 16 is still being used by Signature overnight so the pond parking must have been either stands 17,18, or 19. During the day Signature spread out onto the other stands.
Hello LTNman,

On the first arrival to LTN we parked on stand 18 and there was another U2 parked on stand 17. On the second arrival we parked on either stand 20 or 20R. I did notice that the new stand to our left was marked up and possibly by now ready for use? The only reason I mentioned this was because when we were bussed to the terminal there were plenty of stands empty on the East apron. Interestingly a few minutes later once I vacated the terminal I noticed three EasyJet A/C now parked on the South stands.

On a different note, when departing from LTN on both occasions and during peak hours there was a total lack of seating, as mentioned many times in this forum. I am not sure what the airport has planned but believe they need to 'purchase' between 500 and 600 chairs to accomodate passengers in the departure lounge-hopefully one that is to be extended as was simply far too small.

The extension to the departure lounge is just to add more shops with no new designated seating areas although the odd row of seats might or might not be added in random locations.

A restaurant outlet should have opened last week located in a large area but might have been delayed by a few days and the super sized bar is also due to open this month which will accommodate many waiting passengers. Once both these outlets are open the departure lounge capacity will increase as the airport is expecting 1 million passengers to use the bar alone.

Plenty of NOTAM's are out regarding apron markings.

Massive changes to the airport should start later this year.

A temporary drop off zone will be opened for March next year.

As already mentioned a few months ago by me, a second multi story car park is being proposed inside the CTA but it is now confirmed that it will contain a replacement drop off area to the one completed last week. Seeing that it will be on the ground floor it will have total weather protection.

A third multistory will be built in the mid term car park containing 1040 space consisting of a ground floor plus 3 further floors. Hope the ILS won’t be an issue this time. The completion date is would you believe January next year for this car park.

The ring road is being moved well away from parallel to taxiway Delta so no prizes for guessing where the next apron will appear.

Temporary drop off zone. It looks like passengers will cross pedestrian crossings towards Taxiway Delta to avoid crossing the road. This is going to be one hell of a walk to the terminal.

Temporary CTA layout with moved pay barriers

Permanent drop off zone within multistory car park 2 with new ring road away from Taxiway Delta, which will allow space for a new apron. If built this apron could be easily given a pier connected to new pier B. If that additional pier is built it could then be connected to the south stands.

The new multistory will be bigger than the existing one. Also noted that the exit pay barriers will be contained within the multistory so all other traffic will not be held up.

Mid term multistory. This multistory is meant to be temporary until a permanent arrangement is provided but we shall see if it is ever taken down.

Remarkable that the drop off zone which took a year to complete and was only finished last week will be gone in 10 months to be replaced by a 5 lane drop off zone. I can now see why the referb of the short term car park was abandoned after only one area was completed.

The CTA is almost totally unrecognisable from 2 years ago and now it will change completely again not forgetting the railway station it will also gain.

Just checked the site plan for the multistory in the mid term car park and noted that it is much closer to the runway than the existing multistory. For a reference the southern edge of the fire station lines up nicely with the southern edge of the car park. ILS issues again????

Also noted that the new CTA and drop off zone will have a capacity of 23 million passengers.

Having used the airport for 30+ years, there is nothing about the short sighted, money pinching stupidity of ANY of the parties involved (across those decades) that surprises me.

Reference the proposed second multistory story car park containing the ground floor drop off zone. The LLA solution to get passengers across the ring road is to build a pedestrian underpass with the ring road passing over a bridge. Don't know why I didn't think of that

The exit barriers which will be within the ground floor will increase from the present 5 to 8.

The temporary drop off zone will have a capacity of 108 cars while the permanent one will have a capacity of 120 cars.

Work will start on the temporary drop off zone and modifying the ring road in the last quarter of this year.

It is a shame that the idea of putting a rail link into the CTA was not thought of until after work started on the existing project as much of the newly completed work will have a very short life and that a great deal of money will have been wasted that could have been spent on higher quality fixture and fittings.

Seeing that work within the CTA started in 2015 and with work on the rail link not ending until 2021 that will make it 7 years of work.

Yippee spent millions on the outside and then see the arrivals at Border Agency make many 3rd World Airports look palatial.

The people in front of me last week were shocked at it, asking is this really an airport with a welcome like this, person behind just said welcome to the 3rd World which summed up the shabbiness of it.

Arrivals is due to be made a little bigger together with a big increase in size of the baggage hall but that won't happen until at least 2018/19. That is not to say it will look any better.

racedo - given that your opinions seem to very closely match those of Ryanair, I would have thought you would endorse an approach of keeping spending by airports to the absolute minimum. If airports are to invest in a more pleasant terminal, airport charges to airlines like Ryanair will inevitably increase...

A number of years ago when Luton proposed a new terminal building One, Two, Three O'Leary complained that the plans looked like the Taj Mahal and wanted a more functional building. Well he got his wish. You cannot have it both ways.

I have been looking at the old existing plans for the CTA and the new plans showing the new ring road away from Taxiway Delta and the second multistory.

What the updated plans don't show is another 4 stand apron off Delta but it is easy to see how this is going to happen complete with a Pier C sometime in the future particularly as new taxiway Foxtrot will have an access point to any new apron.

I have roughly modified the existing plan to show the second multistory in dark blue. Pier C with the modified ring road between the car park and the pier and in light blue a 4 stand apron. As seen everything fits nicely.

With the existing drop off area replaced by the station and using the new plans as a guide the service road will pass under the pier which is what is going to happen with pier B now anyway.

My modifications are to scale using the new layout as reference.

Even if the above speculation pier did not run along the southern apron it could still serve two stands on the southern apron from its two corners making it a six stand pier so making it more cost effective.

Having just moments ago watched the U2 320Neo service to Amsterdam just take off over here in South Luton I was amazed how quiet it was! I can not see any reason for complaints from Harpenden residents should Easy base a few of this latest model here at Luton.
