Services between Dundee and Southend, Luton and Stansted were put forward, which required subsidies of £3.9m, £3.3m and £3.2m respectively.
Seems that LTN just lost out. Strange how Southend was the most expensive route to operate.
Not surprised at those figures. They will have been generated by the tenderer (airline), so would take account in particular at SEN the added flying time. As far as airport charges are concerned, MAG are still desperate to justify their huge outlay on Stansted, so will pitch low. Luton, on the other hand, is almost at capacity, so would put forward a realistic cost.
As to Ryanair, if they relinquish their presence at Luton, the slots would be taken by EZY. Leaving Luton would also deprive them of a comparator for their largest base, just to keep MAG honest!
Further, if they weren't making money at Luton, they simply wouldn't be there.

Well - my last arrival at Bedfordshire International from Nimes. Disembarkation not too bad and only hand baggage so no delay. BUT - well let us all wait for the shuttle - no sense of urgency from the driver. And then - trundle trundle - do the buses have a 15 mph max? Shocking. About 10 minutes wait for an all stations to North London from Bedfordshire - 40 minutes???? Aaagh!!! LONDON Luton - Ho Ho Ho!!!!

In December next year a Luton Express will be introduced to join the Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick Express services.

Shame Luton lost out on the Dundee route, it would have been nice to see another domestic route added.
Has there been any interest shown in the old Isle of Man and Jersey routes by anyone?

1.2 miles actually but it doesn't seem to put people off but I take your point and agree with most of your comments.
!
Only one of Gatwick's terminals has its own railway station. For convenience I think Southend probably comes out tops.
Can't see why not.
I was up the airport today before the first morning departure and apart from one cargo stand being empty plus one on the south stands the airport was full.
There was another line up across the bridge as 08 was in use today. These photos were taken just after 7:15am
I can still remember the lean times!
Stansted and Gatwick on the other hand, being well designed and well run airports do have their own rail station

Will it operate on Sundays?

STN + LGW are built on broadly flat areas. LGW had a railway line there before it was built.
LTN is, if memory serves in the two weeks since I was last there, built on a hill and the railway line is in the valley.

It's nice and flat to the south though. Money could fix the issue with a Birmingham type solution but it would be expensive and I guess the view is why fix a problem when it isn't affecting passenger numbers.
The airport does have a target to move more passengers out of their cars and on to public transport which is why the airport got the rail regulator to make it a requirement of the franchise bid that a minimum of 2 trains an hour run through the night to London.

ZagrosJet
I think ZagrosJet operate only A321's, will this aircraft type be able to operate non-stop or without weight restrictions off of Luton's runways?
Thats quite a long route, and know the A321 doesn't have the best of take-off performance.

ZagrosJet
Does seem to be at the absolute max of a A321, assume max loads out from Iraq, which is not an issue as Erbil has almost twice the length as Luton but much hotter.
Back might be an issue, perhaps tech stop in Turkey?

Are 321s weight restricted ex LTN? Monarch have certainly used them to go to Ovda.
Remember prevailing winds help with Easterly sector. Monarch occasionally tech stopped Brussels coming back IIRC but rarely needed to outbound.

Zagrosjet
To Cloud 1
The airline is partly owned by Turkish carrier Atlasjet, and also has similar style branding.
Last summer I was advised to expect longer haul routes operating to and from Luton, and now it is coming into fruition.
Wizz Air was once a gamble and now is proven to be extremely successful and therefore I hope both Atlasjet and Zagrosjet build up their services and maintain a healthy operation to and from Luton.
I wonder what plans Luton have for next year as it appears these new operations are planned 12 to 18 months ahead?

lol I posted a link earlier to the erbil tourism site, There is no reason to think people wont be going in the other direction.
It is the 2014 arab capital of tourism, Now while it doesn't appeal to me, Neither does ibiza.. there is no doubt a huge community who would embrace a service to iraq/kurdistan in the close vicinity to Luton Airport.
I know its a modern trend to be pessimistic and negative but personally I think its a smart route and clever thinking outside of the box. Kurdistan seems to be a rather prosperous secure area of Iraq. The city has over 1 1/2 million people. I wouldn't be surprised if the route was pretty damn successful in the long run.
Be happy the airport is branching out into new terrain rather then the same old Easyjet flights somewhere generic.
