Stobart saw Aer Arann as the perfect airline to take over with the sole purpose of feeding passengers into Southend and soon switched the airlines Luton services to the East Coast. Did they really think that all the passengers would just follow like sheep?
Stobart's adventure in running an airline has been a money pit with not much to show for the effort apart from cut routes and a reduction of services as far as Southend is concerned. Maybe their non Southend routes will keep them going.
The comments here about Stobart Air sticking with Southend are correct but then that is not necessarily the best decision if they want to keep on trading. It would seem that running an airline and an airport causes conflicts of interest to the detriment of the airline.

I agree with some of your comments (particularly the last paragraph of your latest posting) but feel that the AMS route comparison is misleading. The EZY base at SEN doesn't offer the fleet capacity to increase SEN-AMS beyond its present frequency, but every time they have increased frequency the traffic has grown proportionately. At one time only the A319 operated SEN-AMS but now an A320 is employed much of the time, so there still seems to be room for further growth.

Your point is well made and is a valid comment but I thought there was enough slack in the winter timetable to squeeze in another return?

Calm down, it is just called a little thread drift.
As for Luton I see the trees on the approach road are getting the chop today. Apart from survey work last year this is for me the first visible sign of the start of the airport upgrade. I would think that after the trees have gone nothing else will happen for another month or so.
Also looking at the slow progress of the new Signature Apron I would guess that by the end of March it will be open for business.

Waterford and Galway opened to scheduled traffic!
The following item below demonstrates the connection and need for discussion in relation to SEN and LTN airport traffic...
"
Irish carrier Aer Arann has announced that its route between Luton Airport and Waterford carried 9,106 passengers last month - a cross-channel record for the airline.
The 9,000 passenger mark was surpassed again on its flights between Luton and Galway, with overall passenger traffic on the route up by 30 per cent compared with August 2006.
Aer Arann started the Luton-Waterford flights four years ago and boosted flight frequency on the Luton-Galway route three times a day on four days a week last May."
In effect there was a success story until the Aer Arann shifted traffic years later to SEN. and proves a point LTN does have the catchment area to sustain good traffic levels for any airline wishing to serve smaller Irish airports with smaller aircraft.

Hasn't GWY now closed down so no chance of that route returning? I'm sure there is a market for WAT still. The problem is who of the carriers around today, might reasonably operate the route. FlyBe have lost interest in LTN & Stobart isn't going to move so it's hard to see how the route could easily return sadly

Well it was 0-15 minutes £2, over 15 minutes £80.
Now it will be:
0-15 minutes £2.50
16-20 minutes £5.00
21-25 minutes £7.00
26-30 minutes £9.00
31-35 minutes £11.00.
Short term 0-30 minutes £4.00
Mid term 0-30 minutes Free.
Best to take cash as there is a credit card fee which I think from memory is around £1.40.
At the end of the day the airport is spending £100 million on the upgrade so every little helps.

car park charges
The drop area should be just that, to drop off , if you are there any longer you are obviously not doing that and hence the steep hike in prices.
I use Luton quite often even though BHX is a lot closer and always find the parking very reasonable for short stays , my next visit will cost me just over a tenner for a day, it is twice that at BHX . The problem both airports, and others I guess have , is that for people who are meeting and greeting from arriving flights it can be expensive if you are using the short stay but there are ways to get around that if you are savvy.

It always surprises me the shear number of cars that get towed away from the drop off area as there must be signs every 10m of a tow truck lifting a car. A foreign numberplate doesn't protect them in that situation as it it normally the Eastern Europeans that get caught out.

Updated version of the new upgraded Luton Airport https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afZIJxLaPAE
Oh and permanent average speed camera's are being installed in Airport Way to M1 Junction 10 so you have been warned as sections of this road will be 3 lanes in each direction and the speed limit when finished will be 50mph
