Pain in the R's
Those photos truly paint a disturbing picture of what is clearly going wrong.
Why on earth have the Airport signed off this work.
The airport are obviously aware but no apologies on that board I see , maybe the local newspapers should highlight this and try and get answers and at least embarrass the airport operators!!

The photos are what I see every day. While the airport would say that the car park is going to be fixed the link to the terminal is the airports pride and joy and marks the first opening of new infrastructure. At each entrance there are slot drains that should prevent the floors from flooding but when the floor slopes in the wrong direction it isn't going to work.

Slot drains are not going to prevent muddy footprints which show up a treat on a light blue painted floor so it is clear no one has thought this through.

canberra97 comment that the airport should have been rebuilt from scratch is not practical although well intentioned, as the airport would need to close down for at least a couple of years and that was never going to happen.

So what we are left with is the airport claiming at the end of the summer that the worst was over but where traffic queues are still there at peak times, a new drop off zone that can't cope with traffic and a brand new bridge and walkway that is filthy beyond words and where lifts don't work for weeks at a time.

I think it is safe to say that the airport will be winning the Which award again for 2017 for the UK's worst passenger experience.

So we have a new drop off area that needs modifying before it is fully finished and a footbridge and lobbies that needs modifying when it is supposed to be finished. At least the multistory seems to be fine except no one is using it.

One has to question how the airport has got to this position. Painted floors and water was always going to be a problem for no other reason than it is a slip hazard that no one spotted at the airport before it opened.

One also has to question how a single lane drop off area that was designed with no passing places and 4 pedestrian crossings was going to be an improvement on 5 shorter lanes with traffic stopping barriers at the end. As can been seen over Christmas the queues were as long as ever.

One of those crossings is still fenced off and one has still to be built on the entry lane but the fenced off one suggests that someone is having second thoughts though even with only two in place the drop off area still does not work except in light traffic conditions.

Oh and the first pothole in the turning circle of the new bus station has appeared as coaches put on a full lock while stationary after reversing out of the bus bays before moving off.

We don't know, for certain, that they have.

The figures sum up everything that is currently wrong at LTN.....Cramming more and more passengers through a shambolic and shabby facility!

It basically fully exposes the current management policy and I can't see some of long-term based carriers putting up with another Summer of traffic woes etc without saying something serious!

And what's more there's a c0ck-up in the MSCP parking charges.

Turn up on the day, 3 hours, £20.00
Book in advance (tomorrow), 3 hours, £33.99 (gulp).

Those pictures are shocking, I have refrained from commentating on the redevelopment up to now because I have not used the airport for several months as my UK address is now in East Sussex relocating from Bedfordshire. The lift situation is intolerable and the management ought to get it sorted with the utmost urgency. I am surprised Aena and the airlines have not started jumping up and down or maybe they have but the passengers still keep coming. Let us all hope things improve somewhat but I won't hold my breath. On a side when leaving the car ferry at Newhaven port the infrastructure is even worse than the photos from Luton and no customs on duty on Saturday evening! So much for tightening UK borders.

Both the lifts in the short term are still out of order today. The lift by the terminal only seems to have worked for a couple of days since the bridge opened but that might be more down to the large puddle by its doors so might have been shut down deliberately as people are not going to be looking down at their feet when leaving a lift.

New Year seems a long time ago now but White Mountain who are the contractors building the new road network and who built the bridge and cores seem to have removed some of their staff maybe to work on other projects. Either that or they are still on holiday. There were maybe 4 guys working outside the CTA on drainage for the road and tunnel and maybe another 4 or 5 working on the new taxi rank. There might have been others on long tea breaks but there doesn't seem to be any urgency in finishing their contract and I have real doubts that it will be finished by Easter as no work on finishing off the digging out of the embankment inside the CTA has taken place since around the 15th December.

The short term car park should be getting a make over in the coming weeks or even months so I assume it will be closed with all parking shifted to the multistory not that it is stopping the airport selling car park spaces in it with no gaps in the dates available. If they are going to resurface the short term then it needs to be done now while the airport is out of season and not wait until after Easter when passenger numbers start to grow again.

Went out and back on Vueling A320 today to Amsterdam and was surprised there was only about 30 people on it . I hope it is busier than this other days or it will go the way of Zurich

When is this airport refurbishment going to be completed?

I would rather land at Abba Jifar Airport than fly back into LTN at the moment.

2021 if you include the mass transit system and new station although the terminal should be completely finished around spring next year. By 2021 I am sure there will be other projects planned so it will depend whether there is a gap in the building work or the airport will just carry on building but what is going on this year and last year is the most intrusive part as far as passengers are concerned.

Work has yet to start is phase 2 & 3 which starts this spring but that is pure airside and involves new taxiways and apron extensions.

Top International & Domestic Routes 2016

International:

Copenhagen – 765,151
Amsterdam – 607,156
Budapest – 570,251
Bucharest – 510,197
Warsaw – 397,914
Tel Aviv - 366,316
Barcelona – 365,816
Dublin - 348,593
Katowice – 311,345
Malaga – 301,970
Vilnius – 295,332
Palma de Mallorca – 281,432
Sofia – 278,177
Geneva – 268,677
Gdansk – 265,998
Paris Charles de Gaulle – 253,248 (Down from 2015)
Faro – 252,879
Cluj Napoca – 238,459
Alicante – 235,567
Berlin 173,915 (Down from 2015)

Domestic:

Belfast – 308,950
Edinburgh – 271,897
Glasgow – 214,489 (Down from 2015)
Inverness – 133,298
Aberdeen – 71,909

A good year for Luton's routes, nearly all routes up from 2015, apart from Paris, Berlin and Glasgow. I think Paris traffic could be down due to Transavia's entry into the market with LTN-ORY. Also, significant rises in traffic in 2016 include Barcelona (with Vueling entry and increased EZY frequency), Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Vilnius.

That's a very good point AVGekk. That's the most likely idea as we haven't heard much more on any new routes.

As much as its meant to be Düsseldorf if you look on a map it's the same distance between the both of them.

Not sure which map you're looking at but as far away as it may be I'd still say Dusseldorf is a good bit closer.

Does that mean we can start calling your favourite airport "Northampton Luton"?

Being a different of a 20 mins drive I wouldn't say it was that far away and people from Dortmund may use the airport. Why use Northampton when the name Luton is being used which descripes where the airport is. Weeze should be called that alone as its own place but Ryanair wouldn't do something like that.
